I should have run the moment he said my name like that.
But my body did not listen.
And that was the beginning of my real danger.
Kael stands in front of me.
Still.
Calm.
But everything around him feels heavy.
Like the air is waiting for his next word.
My heart is beating too fast.
The guards are frozen.
My stepmother is watching him like she is trying to measure a weapon.
Selene is smiling again.
Like she already knows how this ends.
I swallow hard.
“You don’t get to decide what happens to me,” I say to Kael.
My voice shakes a little.
I hate that it does.
Kael looks at me.
Only me.
“I am not deciding,” he says.
I frown.
“Then what are you doing?”
He steps slightly closer.
Not enough to touch me.
But enough to make my chest tighten.
“I am stopping them from taking you.”
My stepmother laughs softly.
“You have no authority here,” she says.

“I don’t need it.”

“You are not even from this pack,” she says.
Kael finally glances at her.
“I don’t belong to any pack,” he replies.
That line feels dangerous.
My stepmother narrows her eyes.
“Then you are trespassing.”
Kael’s answer is instant.
“So are your lies.”
Silence.

I feel my throat tighten.

Kael finally looks at me again.
And something in his eyes softens for a second.

“You,” he says.
My stomach drops.
“What do you mean?”
He did not explain immediately.
Instead, he turns slightly toward my stepmother.
“You want her bond awakened fully,” he says.
Her face changes.
That is enough to answer.
My heart starts beating faster.
“What bond?” I ask again.
Kael’s voice is quieter now.
But sharper.
“The kind that should not exist.”
I step back.
“No. You are wrong.”
My stepmother smiles faintly.
“Tell her,” she says.
Kael does not move his eyes from mine.
“You are not a normal mate,” he says.
My voice breaks slightly.
“I am Beta blood. That is all.”
Kael shakes his head.
“No.”
That single word feels like a door opening.
And I don’t want to see what is inside.
He continues.
“You carry a rare Alpha bond structure.”
Silence.
My mind refuses to accept it.
“That is impossible,” I say quickly.
Kael steps closer again.
This time, I will not step back.
I cannot.
“Your rejection was not final,” he says.
My chest tightens.
“What are you saying?”
His voice drops.
“You can bond with more than one Alpha.”
The world stops.
Selene laughs softly behind me.
But I don’t even hear her properly.

My stepmother speaks next.
“That is why she must be controlled.”
My hands started shaking again.

Kael answers without hesitation.
“Yes.”

“You think you are the only one who knows what she is?” she asks Kael.
He does not respond.
She smiles.

My breath stops.
“What?” I whisper.
She looks at me now.
“You were never hidden by accident.”
My heart pounds harder.
“What are you talking about?” I demand.
Kael turns slightly toward her.
His voice is low.
“Stop talking.”
But she ignores him.
“You were marked before birth,” she says.
Silence.

Heavy.
I shake my head.
“No. That is not true.”
My stepmother continues.
“You are part of a blood experiment.”
My legs feel weak.
Kael’s expression changes slightly.

Dangerous.
Selene looks confused now.
Even she did not know this.
I whisper, “That is a lie.”
Kael steps closer to me now.
Not to threaten.
Too steady.
“You are not a liar,” he says.
His voice is firm.
That steadies me a little.

My stepmother smiles again.
“You think he will protect you forever?” she asked me.
I don’t answer.
Because I don’t know.
Kael answers for me.
“As long as she chooses it.”
That word hits me again.

Something inside me shifts.
Emotional Turn
Selene suddenly speaks.
“You should have stayed rejected,” she says again.
I look at her.
And I feel something different now.
Not fear.

“I was not rejected,” I say quietly.
She laughs.
“Yes, you were.”
I shake my head.
“No.”
My voice becomes stronger.
“I was released.”

Even Kael looks at me now.
My stepmother’s smile fades slightly.

My hands stop shaking.
“I was never meant to belong to one Alpha.”
That truth feels strange.

My stepmother whispers, “She is waking up.”
