The road works mentioned by pilot Hal Denning meant that over one hundred yards of Winstanley Road had been dug up for the laying of a new drainage pipe by the local Water Board, responsible for all water services in the North West. As the stretch of road covered by the work included a slight bend in the road, in addition to the traffic lights positioned at each end of the ongoing work, a workman holding the ubiquitous STOP/GO lollipop sign was positioned on the breast of the curve to ensure traffic flowed safely through the roadworks, as the bend prevented seeing cars at one end from seeing the full length of the ongoing work.
