Veronica POV It was a hellish day. I think, to my boss, I am the only one in this company. He always gave me extra work and even I had to over-time without a salary. I didn't say anything because of my dad. George's uncle oka my boss is a good friend of my dad. I have loving parents. They always fulfill my wants. But I don't know why my elder sister don't like me. She always had issues with me. Now I am at my front door, don't know which topic she will choose to fight with me today. “Good evening, mom.” I entered the living room. Our house is not so big, but it's enough for us to live happily with each other. I found my mom sitting on the couch with Lily, my elder sister. She has an angry look on her face. “Good evening, Vicky. You must be tired, go, freshen up. I am going to warm dinner. Your dad will come back soon,” she told me lovingly. But at that, Lily started laughing bitterly. “You always care for her more because she is not your own daughter. Isn't it, mom?” Venom was splitting on her words. “LILY!” mom yelled at her. What the hell is she talking about? Had she gone crazy? “Why are you screaming at me, mom? I am only telling the truth.” The truth! I was standing there confused. Don't know what to do or say. “Shut up, Lily. Go to your room.” my mom hissed at her. “No, mom. Let her know the truth. She was abandoned by her own parents.” she told mom, pointing at me. Then she turned towards me. “ And your own parents don't want a daughter like you. That's why they threw you away from the street. Why don't you disappear from our house as well?” I shook my head and looked at mom. There was sadness in her eyes. “M-Mom, s-she is telling l-lies, right?” I stammered. Mom, please say this is a lie! I pleaded with my eyes. But she didn't answer. She looked down. “Good evening, guys. Wow, you all are here today. For welcoming me, right?” dad came back with his usual coolness. If it was another time, I would run towards him and throw myself on him. But not today. “What happened?” he asked us, when he saw the seriousness of the situation. “Why are tears in my princess's eyes?” he came towards me and asked me warily. “Dad, am-am I not your d-daughter?” I questioned him in a disoriented voice. I saw dad's expression change. “W-who told you that? Definitely you are my daughter.” He told me, stroking my face. “Why are you feeding her lies, dad? She is old enough to know the truth, dad.” Lily told dad bitterly. “Shut up, Lily. Go back to your room.” Dad warned her. “Dad, she...” Lily went to say something, but mom slapped her. “Your dad said to go to your room.” mom hissed at Lily. Lily shook her head and looked at me. Anger was dripping from her eyes. “You won't trust me, right? I will show you the proof. Just stay here.” saying that she went to mom and dad's room. Then mom came to me and softly caressed my head and said, “She is just kidding, baby. Go to your room and take a rest. I will bring your food to your room.” She gave me a small smile that didn't reach to her eye. “Your mom is right. Go, get some rest.” dad agreed with mom. But I shook my head. “No, dad. I wanna see what she wanted to show me.” I told them while sobbing. I have to know the truth. Lily came back with some papers within minutes. “See this. And you will trust me then.” I took that paper from her. And I froze instantly when I saw the contents in it. Lily was telling the truth! “I am adopted.” I whispered. My whole world shattered at that moment. Who I have known from my childhood weren't my real parents? The papers fell on the floor from my hand, and I ran to my bedroom. I heard my parents call me from the back. But I didn't look back. I don't have the courage nor the strength to look into their eyes. I came to my room and broke down. I heard a knock after a while and I didn't respond. Then mom and dad came inside. Mom sat beside me and hugged me. Dad also did the same. “You know we love you a lot. Maybe we are not your real parents, though I didn't give you birth, but still, we considered you as our own, and we always will.” mom told me, squeezing my back. “And don't ever think that you are alone. We always have your back.” dad comforted me. “I know, dad. Dad, do you know who my real parents are?” I asked dad, but he didn't reply then I looked at mom for the answer, but she shook her head. “You are so small when we find you on our doorstep. There was a note on the basket with you which said, ‘Take care of the little bundle of joy.’ And from that moment, you became our little happiness.” dad said with a little smile. “Can you show me the note?” I asked him, and he nodded. Then went to bring the note. “Sweetheart, this necklace was with you when we found you.” I took the necklace from mom. Something linked to the necklace forming a circular pattern. It was a combined animal and wings type something. Whatever it was, it was quite beautiful. Dad came back after sometime and showed me the note. I didn't wanna be rude, but I told them to give me some alone time. One thing was running on my mind. My real parents don't want me. They abandoned me. They left me on the street to die. No, I can't sit here and mourn about it. I have to find my parents and I need my answer why they left me. So I did what I had to do. In the middle of night, I packed my bag and left my home, where I was living from the last 23 years. I left a note for my foster parents which says, ‘Mom-dad thank you for giving me so much love. I am going to find my real parents. I need my answer. I will come back to you after that. I love you both. Take care.’
