To protect her from the wolves, Edwin drew Veronica behind him. The wolves stopped howling as a man emerged from behind the tree wearing nothing but shorts. Considering how they bowed before him, the man seemed to be their leader. He looked younger than his age. The man appeared strong and muscular in front of his subordinates, but he failed to intimidate the couple.
“Look who we have here—the crown prince of the vampire kingdom. The greatest vampire in history crossed our pack’s border. What an honor!” he exclaimed sarcastically.
How dare that bustard! Nobody is allowed to speak to her mate in front of her in that voice. Her insides burned with rage. Deep breathing didn’t seem to be making a difference. If he said another word, she would yank his head away from his body. Edwin held her close, sensing her anger.
‘Calm down, my angry bird. Let me talk,’ Edwin mind-linked Veronica. His voice put her at ease for a moment.
“Listen, there’s no need for fighting. We can discuss this matter.” Edwin’s voice was calm, which only meant business.
“We don’t talk to leeches,” the man snarled.
And that was enough for Veronica to snap. A large, pure-white lycan was standing where the human girl was. They had never seen such a creature in real life. They read books about the legend, and she— was the legend. She was stunning in her Lycan form. A strong, powerful, and dominating aura was radiating from her. She let out a murderous growl, and those who were admiring her beauty shrank in fear. They bowed their heads instinctively. Their leader fell to his knees and appeared to submit himself to her.
When she was about to lunge at the man, Edwin stood in front of her. “No. Don’t,” he asked her to stop, shaking his head.
‘Move!’ Veronica growled angrily.
“No. Calm down, please. Little fairy, please look into my eyes. Don’t, baby; you will regret it,” he said softly, and took a step forward, slowly approaching her. He placed his hand on her muzzle, and she leaned on his touch. She shifted back to her human form. Veronica smiled at Edwin before turning her attention to the wolves.
“Up.” They all stood up. It seemed almost as if they were acting on their leader’s orders. “I hope we can talk now,” Veronica stated, giving the man a challenging look.
“Wh-Who a-are you?” the man asked her, stammering.
Veronica scoffed, walked towards him, and said, “Your ancestor.” She pushed past him, walking towards the pack house. Edwin joined her, followed by the man and some of the wolves in their human forms.
“Ouch!” A soft cry left Veronica’s lips as she suddenly bumped into someone. “Hi!” she exclaimed awkwardly as she found ‘that someone’ was none other than Eli.
“What the f**k are you doing here? Do you even know its pack territory?” Eli yelled at her in frustration.
“Yeah. They told us,” Veronica replied, pointing to the crowd behind them. Eli sighed, as he couldn’t even yell at that cute face. He glared at Edwin, giving him an accusing look. Edwin exhaled deeply before explaining to Eli.
“Listen, it was a mistake, okay?” Eli scoffed at Edwin’s words.
“Mistake? Your mistake could have killed her!” Eli shouted at Edwin. “I let her be alone with you for a few hours, and you messed up?” he added, nearly grabbing Edwin’s collar. And it was Edwin’s turn to get angry.
“Eli Willard Roberts, behave yourself. Don’t forget that I am your elder brother,” Edwin growled.
“Guys…”
“Then you should have acted like one!” Eli retorted.
“GUYS!”
“What!” Edwin and Eli both snapped at Veronica in unison.
“We have an audience,” she said calmly, pointing behind them, where a bunch of wolves were staring at them in bewilderment.
“Alright, we will discuss it later. Grab me; I am going to get you out of here,” Eli muttered, only for the two of them to hear.
“No. We have matters to discuss.” Eli frowned at Edwin and then looked at Veronica. His eyes widened as the realization hit him when he noticed the missing bracelet on Veronica’s wrist.
“No,” Eli said, shaking his head. “Don’t… Don’t tell me you shifted in front of them,” he hissed.
“Umm…sorry…It’s kind of happened,” Veronica replied sheepishly. Eli sighed, not being able to get mad at her.
“Fine. Let’s settle this,” Eli said reluctantly.
---------
Eli stiffened as soon as they stepped inside. He shrugged off Veronica with a dismissive smile when she asked whether he was okay. Edwin, Eli, and Veronica were sitting across from the man, who was apparently the pack's alpha, his Luna, and their daughter, Clara. The packs Beta and Gamma were also present in the room. Veronica kept glaring at Clara as she was lusting over Eli, who seemed uncomfortable the whole time. He excused himself a while ago, and so did Clara. Veronica so wished to follow them, but Edwin kept her in place.
The argument between Edwin and the alpha Caleb went on, and it felt like forever to Veronica. Veronica didn’t want to be there; she wanted to be with Eli and comfort him. She didn’t know why she was feeling this way. But she was glad the meeting was over. Alpha Caleb promised the pack he wouldn’t reveal Veronica’s secret in exchange for Edwin never attacking their pack after he became king.
Edwin and Veronica find Eli outside the building. He looked pale and tired. Veronica ran towards him and wrapped her small arms around him.
“Where were you? I was so worried,” Veronica asked, burying her head into his chest and inhaling his light fragrance of Delphinium, the most poisonous flower in the world—poisonous but beautiful.
“I had some unfinished tasks,” Eli replied, putting his chin on her head. “Let’s go home,” he added, extending his other hand to Edwin. Eli teleported them back to his safehouse, still wrapping his arms around Veronica protectively.
“Are you sure you're okay?” Veronica asked him again.
“I am fine... It didn’t hurt that much,” Eli replied, placing his face on the crook of her neck and taking deep breaths, inhaling his own personal drug. “Thank you…thank you so much, cupcake…” His voice was muffled, and his weight grew heavier as he collapsed on her. Edwin helped her, getting Eli laid on the bed.
“Don’t worry. He is just tired. He will wake up soon,” Edwin comforted her, while Veronica was sitting beside Eli, running her fingers softly through his hair.
“I shouldn’t have gone outside. I should have stayed with him,” she sniffed. Fresh tears rolled down her cheeks. Edwin scooped her up in his arms.
“Shh. It’s not your fault. He is just stupid. He will wake up perfectly healthy,” he cooed to her, rocking her like a baby until she fell asleep.
-----------
As soon as Eli opened his eyes, his gaze was drawn to her beautiful face. She was sleeping peacefully in Edwin’s arms.
“You guys should stop doing this,” Eli said, sitting up.
“Showering love to each other?” Edwin bragged, kissing the top of his sleeping mate. Eli sighed at his brother’s unnecessary display of affection.
“Sitting beside my bed all night,” Eli muttered.
“Then you should stop fainting,” Edwin joked.
“You…” Eli stopped himself from lashing out, as he didn’t want to wake his sweet cupcake up.
“What exactly happened, Eli?” Edwin asked him without beating around the bush. Eli stiffened for a moment.
“I found my second chance mate,” Eli replied honestly, knowing Edwin wouldn’t stop until he revealed the truth.
“And?” Should Eli feel blessed to have Edd as his brother? How can a person see right through you? Edwin would eventually find out, even if Eli hid everything. So he decided to be honest…
A sweet fragrance hit his nostrils as soon as he stepped inside the pack house. And he was certain he knew what it was. His blood goddess had again bound him to someone else. But this time the difference was that he didn’t want a mate who wasn’t ‘HER’.
He tried to ignore his mate but she was there, right inside the room. To avoid the girl, he excused himself from the meeting, but she followed him out of the room.
“Hey!” she called him out.
“Hi.”
“I didn’t know it was possible, but I think we are…” Eli cut her off before she could finish her sentence.
“Reject me,” he blurted out.
“What!”
“Reject me. Please, I am begging you. Reject me. I… I don’t know why the blood goddess did this to me, but please do me this favor. I know it’s cruel, but I love someone else. I can never give you the love you deserve. You will find someone better—someone who will love you, cherish you, and adore you—and I am not that man. So please reject me,” Eli spelled out in one breath, desperately.
“No. I won’t reject you,” she replied stubbornly, shaking her head.
“Listen, I know how it feels to be rejected; that's why I am telling you for your own good. I am not good for you. You don’t know me. I am a monster,” he snickered at the end of the sentence, as if mocking himself.
“And I am telling you, I won’t reject you,” she said, getting angry.
“You won’t reject me, and I can’t accept you. So there’s only one solution, and I am sorry I need to do it. It will hurt a bit, so hang on,” Eli replied calmly before taking deep breaths. “I, Eli Willard Roberts, son of Emmanuel Roberts, the prince of the Vampire kingdom, reject you, Clara Stanley, the daughter of Alpha Caleb Stanley of the Red Crescent Pack.” A slight pain hit Eli as he finished his sentence.
“Whoa, it didn’t hurt much, not physically. But, Eli Willard Roberts, I am not going to let it slide. I will make sure you pay for my humiliation,” Clara threatened Eli, and walked away.
“You are too cruel. Don’t ever bind me to someone else if it won’t be ‘HER’,” Eli prayed to his blood goddess, watching Clara’s disappearing figure.
“I can’t believe it.” Edwin’s words broke Eli’s trance. “You f*****g risk your own life. You could have died,” Edwin hissed at Eli. Eli didn’t answer him; he only scoffed. “Are you sure you won’t regret it?” Edwin asked him softly.
“She is worth risking my life for. And I won’t regret my decision ever,” Eli stated, looking at Veronica with so much love and adoration. Veronica stirred in Edwin’s arms.
“Good morning, little one,” Edwin whispered, kissing her on top of her nose.
“Morning,” Veronica replied in her morning voice. Her eyes fluttered open, and she snapped her head to Eli as last night’s event crashed down on her. When she found Eli sitting on the bed, she threw her arms around him.
“Whoa, cupcake, slow down. You are crushing me,” Eli said, chuckling.
“You scared the hell out of me, you i***t,” Veronica scolded him, smacking his arm when she pulled back.
“It won’t happen again, I promise,” Eli promised her, brushing his fingers on her face. But all of a sudden, his eyes widened in shock.
“What happened?” Veronica asked, watching his expression, but he didn’t answer; he only stared at her with unreadable eyes. She turned to Edwin for an answer, but his face also changed as if he had seen a ghost. “Guys, what happened?” she asked again.
But before they could answer, a sharp wave of pain surged through her back. She screamed in agony. Her entire body started to burn. And before she could realize it, an unknown force started to take over her senses…
