Rogue Attack

“Did you feel something?” Ruth asked. “I felt hot. It’s as if my entire body was burning,” Veronica exclaimed. “Great. Now, focus your energy on that glass,” Ruth said, pointing towards the glass on the nightstand. Veronica did as she was told; she focused all her energy on the glass and tried to lift it. Slowly, it started to float in the air. “I did it. I did it. Ruth, look, I did it!” Veronica exclaimed in excitement, but the sudden scattering sound made her turn to the floor. The glass, which had been floating in the air a while ago, was scattered into pieces. “Or maybe not.” “Hey, don’t be sad. You did great for a first-timer. Remember one thing, though—keep focused and don’t lose eye contact,” Ruth encouraged her. “Try something medium. Uhh—that vase,” Ruth added, pointing to the object. Veronica focused on the vase, lifted it slowly, kept it floating in midair, changed directions—left and right, up and down—and then slowly placed the vase down. She smiled at herself for her small achievement. “Do you wanna try the big one?” Ruth asked her. Veronica looked at the large cupboard in the corner and tried to lift it. She pushed all her power into it—lifted it slightly. She tried to hold it up, but failed. “Don’t be upset. You need practice for it. You can’t do something in one day,” Veronica sighed, looking at the floor. She knew one day wasn’t enough, but she didn’t have time. She wanted to be on the battlefield, fighting side by side with Edwin and her subjects. “How did we get into the arena?” Veronica lifted her face upon hearing Ruth’s voice. Veronica looked at her confusedly. “What do you mean? We are still sitting in the bedroom,” Veronica answered, frowning. “What! Wait, did you just create an illusion?” Veronica narrowed her eyes on Ruth. She didn’t have a single clue what Ruth was talking about. “You have the gift of controlling others' minds. Wow, Vicky, I knew you were special!” Ruth exclaimed eagerly. “What are you talking about? What illusion? What mind control?” Veronica asked cluelessly. “Illusion is a trick to control the mind, and you just did it,” Ruth explained. “But I didn’t do anything. I just…” She was thinking about the battle. Did it do the trick? Think about something you desperately want? “Try it again— on me,” Rush asked Veronica, and she did. She tried to concentrate her energy on Ruth, trying to control her mind. But nothing happened. Veronica shook her head in disappointment. “You are wrong, Ruth. I can’t control minds. I don’t have such powers. I am not special,” Veronica mumbled. “No, you are. And it did work. I used up all my power to resist your control. And you will get better at it if you keep practicing,” Ruth encouraged her. “And you know what? Now you can fight. Try to mind-link Edwin. As you are already bound to his soul, I hope you can see what he is seeing.” Veronica nodded at her and closed her eyes to mind-link Edwin. ‘Hey, Eddy.’ ‘Little one, is everything alright? Are you okay?’ Edwin asked her worriedly. Ruth was right; she could see the battleground. A rogue appeared out of nowhere and bit Edwin’s arm. He swung his sword and sliced the rogue into two pieces. ‘Sweetheart, why aren’t you answering? Please, say something,’ he pleaded desperately. ‘I am alright. I just wanted to listen to your voice,’ Veronica assured him. ‘Don’t worry, my little fairy. I will return with a win,’ Edwin reassured her with a forced smile, but she saw him struggling. Veronica opened her eyes and looked at Ruth. “I can see not only what Edwin is seeing but also the entire battle field,” she told Ruth. “I am not surprised. You have Raphael’s gifts. Fight your own battle. Best of luck,” Ruth replied with a cheering smile. ‘We will win, Eddy,’ Veronica mused, closing her eyes and concentrating on the battle. She saw a rogue approaching Eli from behind, so she lifted it off the ground. She felt she was losing, yet she pushed herself to hold on. She hurled the rogue into a nearby tree. His head split open, oozing blood from the wounds. Veronica felt nauseous at the sight of it. But she knew she had to be stronger if she wanted her family and her subjects to be safe. She used telekinesis on several rogues, but she realized if she used it one by one, it would take a large amount of time and make it hard for them to win. So she decided to control their minds. First of all, she created an illusion for the rogue to confuse them. And it would be easier to control their minds when they were distracted. But controlling the minds of an entire bunch of rogues wasn’t easy. Veronica pushed herself beyond her limits. Her head was spinning; a wave of nausea hit her; she felt numb, yet she held herself on. She couldn’t let them lose. She couldn’t let them get hurt. Soon enough, the rogues started to fight with each other. Edwin, Eli, and other soldiers were watching them; confusion, shock, and surprise were lacing their faces. Surprisingly, the battle ended earlier than expected, and they won unexpectedly. Eli teleported him and Edwin to Edwin’s bedroom as soon as the battle ended. But the scene in front of them stiffened both brothers. Veronica was struggling to breathe; her face was drained of all color, and an unknown young woman was sitting beside her. Edwin didn’t waste time rushing to his sweet mate. He engulfed her in his arms. “Are you alright, little one? What happened to you, baby? You know we won the battle. I need you to celebrate with me,” Edwin nearly cried, caressing her face softly. Veronica smiled weakly and murmured, ‘I know,’ before drifting off into darkness. “Who are you? And what the hell did you do to her?” Eli roared, placing his sword on the woman’s neck. The woman shrugged. “I didn’t do anything. She just exhausted herself,” she replied casually. Eli narrowed his eyes. “What do you mean by that?” he raged. “What do you think I mean?” She retorted as if there weren’t any swords placed on her neck. “How do you think you have won the battle?” she asked, raising her brow. Eli shared a look with Edwin before turning his attention back on the woman. But she disappeared into the air. Eli slumped himself down beside Edwin and caressed his sweet cupcake’s head gently. “She used her gifts so that we could win?” Eli muttered to himself. “It’s her, Edd. She won a losing battle for us. Isn’t she amazing!” Eli gushed, his eyes glazed with tears. Edwin sniffled. “She is, but she never listens,” Edwin’s voice cracked at last. “I told her to be safe, yet look what she did. I would never have forgiven myself if anything… anything happened to her,” Edwin fretted out, pressing his lips on her forehead. “That’s what makes her. A stubborn, handful, uncontrollable, innocent soul,” Eli stated, placing a kiss on her head. A sudden sound of a knock on the door grabbed both of their attention. Edwin remembered that he needed to report on the battle to the king. He looked at Eli, who nodded, getting the hint. “Give her to me,” he said, scooping Veronica into his arms. “I will take care of her,” Eli reassured him. Edwin got out of the room, giving one last glance at his unconscious mate. ******* Edwin found his mate sleeping soundly in Eli’s arms, who was ogling her and smiling like a fool. “You look like a dumb,” Edwin commented, slipping into the bed and placing his hand around Veronica protectively. “You can’t blame me, though,” Eli chuckled, placing a kiss on the side of her head. “She looked so adorable while sleeping,” he added. Edwin sighed. “It’s midnight, Eli; you should go back to your room,” Edwin stated seriously. “I don’t want to,” Eli muttered, behaving like a child. “Can’t I stay tonight with her?” He looked at Edwin with his puppy-dog eyes. “Please, Edd,” he pleaded like a kid wanting his Christmas present. Edwin hadn’t seen this childish side of Eli in centuries. It was similar to the first time he met his younger brother, when he asked Edwin for something and Edwin was powerless to refuse. “Fine! But don’t startle her,” Edwin muttered. “Edd, can I ask you something?” Eli asked out of the blue. “Don’t ask me why I haven’t killed you yet. I don't even know why. I can’t bear to see her with someone else. I even thought about killing Sam and Jace whenever they hugged her for more than three seconds. But honestly, I don’t know why I felt relief instead of jealousy whenever she was with you. So, don’t ask me; I don’t have the answer either,” Edwin admitted with a sigh. “Instead, let me ask you something. Why her?” He added. Eli laughed at Edwin’s question. “Why are we asking each other questions that we don’t know the answers to ourselves?” Eli looked at Veronica’s face before answering. “I don’t know, Edd. It just happened—without any reason, without any logic. I just... I just fell,” Eli scoffed to himself. “I didn’t even know I was falling. I realized, when I had already fallen, when it was too late to pull myself together, to hold myself back,” Eli confessed. “But I won’t apologize to you. Cause I... It’s the best feeling I have ever had. If God gave me another chance, I would happily fall for her all over again,” he added smilingly. Eli went to kiss her, but Edwin stopped him. “Not now, Eli. You need to confess to her first,” Edwin stated seriously. “I am scared, Edd. I am scared that I might lose her,” Eli admitted his fear. “You won’t, Eli. Not unless I kill you,” Edwin stated with a smirk. “Aww, you are so mean, Edd,” Eli exclaimed, making a disgusted face. “Am I?” Edwin faked a shocked face, and both brothers started laughing at their words.
