Eli teleported them to his safe house. It will be safer for them for a while until Emmanuel Roberts finds out.
“I am sorry. It’s all my fault. It’s because of me that you guys are in danger. I am extremely sorry…” Edwin cradled Veronica before she could utter another word. He held her against his chest tightly, squeezing her back.
Edwin placed his face on the crook of her neck and whispered, “It’s not your fault that I love you; it’s not your fault that I can give my everything only to protect you.” He pulled back, took her face between his palms, and said, “And it’s not your fault that you are my sweet little fairy,” kissing the tip of her nose. Veronica gave him a soft smile.
“It’s my fault.” Both of their heads turned in Eli’s direction. “I shouldn’t have rejected her,” Eli said, looking towards the ground.
“WHAT!” Veronica stared at him with wide eyes. “You did what?” she asked again, stepping in front of him.
“I reject Clara, my second chance mate,” he confessed without looking at Veronica.
“Why?” Her voice came out in a whisper.
“Cause I… well, I…” Eli stumbled with his words when they felt two pairs of eyes staring at them, burning holes right through them. Eli, Veronica, and Edwin turned to face them. Edwin cleared his throat.
“Guys, we…” Edwin tried to explain.
“I thought we were brothers!” Sam shouted in anger, without giving Edwin a chance to complete his sentence.
“How could you hide it from us?” Jason shook his head in disappointment.
“We didn’t… want you to get into trouble,” Edwin said. “But how could you go against your king without thinking about the consequences!” he exclaimed with more intensity in his voice this time.
“You think we betrayed our king?” Jason asked incredulously.
“I think what you did was stupidity,” Edwin retorted.
“If you think protecting our future king and queen is stupidity, then yes, we are stupid,” Sam snapped at Edwin.
“Maybe I don’t deserve to be your king anymore,” Edwin signed, turning his head in another direction.
“I asked them not to tell you. I am sorry. I thought you would hate me if you knew who I actually am,” Veronica said, feeling guilty.
“And who you actually are?” Veronica looked at Jason at his sudden question.
“I…” Veronica opened and closed her mouth, but no word came out of her lips.
“Tell me, Vicky, who are you? Well, for me, you are my sister. Wasn’t it enough for me to know?” Jason said, stepping toward Veronica.
“But vampires and lycans are natural-born enemies,” Veronica mumbled, tears streaming down her face.
“I don’t care. You are my sister. That’s all that matters. I don’t care if you are a lycan, fairy, or hybrid princess,” he coaxed her, wiping away her tears and embracing her.
“That’s enough. You can stop hugging her,” Edwin mumbled.
“Look who’s still jealous,” Jason scoffed, pulling away from Veronica. “And you…” Jason turned to Eli.
“Don’t ask,” Eli said uninterestedly, slumping himself down on the sofa. Jason sighed.
“Wait a sec. So does that mean you didn’t tell Isabella?” Sam asked Veronica.
“I did,” she replied casually.
“And why is that?” Sam asked, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Wait, why didn’t you tell us that you told her?” Edwin asked her too.
“Chicks before d***s, remember?” Veronica replied with a shrug.
“Haven’t you guys finished your complaining yet?” All eyes turned to the source of the sound. Sam and Jason pointed their swords in her direction.
“Hey, guys, stop. She is my aunt!” Veronica shrieked.
“Aunt?” All of them boomed in unison, including Eli, who was relaxing on the couch.
“When did you know?” Edwin asked her, narrowing her eyes.
“She told me in the forest,” Veronica replied.
“And when exactly were you going to tell me?” he asked, crossing his hands over his chest. Veronica gave him a guilty smile, making Edwin exhale deeply. “And what the f**k is the Dragon doing here?” he barked, narrowing his eyes at Rayan.
“Oh, he is with me,” Ruth said casually.
“You brought a dragon here?” Edwin growled.
“Eddy!” Veronica hissed at him. Edwin sighed reluctantly. “And you… Can you stop disguising yourself?” Veronica said, looking at Ruth.
“I was just worried that people might faint at my enchanted beauty,” Ruth shrugged, shifting back to her true form.
“Wow,” Veronica heard Jason whisper. “Stop me if I’m gonna bite her,” Jason murmured.
“What?” Jason’s trance broke at Veronica’s words.
“Umm… I am going outside to guard,” Jason strode outside, giving an excuse. Edwin was staring at her suspiciously.
“I have seen you before,” Edwin said, trying to remember her familiar face.
“Me?” Ruth asked, pointing her fingers at her. “In your room the other day with Vicky!” she exclaimed.
“No, before that... Somewhere else,” Edwin retorted.
“I don’t think so,” Ruth said with an awkward laugh. “You might be confused by my attractiveness,” she bragged.
“Ruth, stop messing around,” Rayan stated with a stoic face, sitting down on a chair. Ruth glared at Rayan and muttered ‘thank you’ annoyingly.
“Ruth!” Edwin repeated her name. And that clicked. He remembered where he had seen her before. A dark expression clouded his face. “You… How dare you show yourself in front of me after snatching my mate from me?” Edwin roared at Ruth.
“You… you should be thankful for that,” Ruth stammered, trying not to flinch. Edwin scoffed at her words.
“Thankful to you for separating my mate from me? You old sneaky fairy!” Edwin argued.
“You... who do you think you are calling old? I am younger than you, you old vamp. Have you ever seen such a gorgeous fairy like me?” Ruth retorted, pointing her fingers at Edwin.
“Oh. Come on. Have you ever seen yourself in the mirror?” Edwin snickered. “And yes. I have seen a gorgeous fairy. My mate is the one,” Edwin stated sincerely.
“Of course she is gorgeous. She got her aunt’s gene after all,” Ruth bragged, flipping her hair. Veronica sat down between Eli and Sam, who were enjoying the show in front of them.
“Have you ever seen Eddy bickering like this with anyone?” she asked them, staring at their argument. She had never seen this childish side of Edwin.
“Never; it’s my first time. But it’s funny,” Eli chuckled, holding his stomach. “I haven’t seen it either, and it’s damn funny,” Sam agreed with Eli.
“Guys, can you stop laughing? My mate and my aunt are arguing. Will you please stop them?” Veronica hissed at them.
“I am not stopping them and ruining my entertainment!” Eli exclaimed. “Neither am I,” Sam murmured beside her. She sighed helplessly. Her eyes fell on Rayan, who was staring at her the whole time. As soon as their eyes met, she felt as if gravity were pulling her down; everything around her slowed down. Rayan broke eye contact first, and Veronica was back to reality, where her mate and aunt were still bickering.
“Yes, I am a cold-blooded, heartless jerk. But I am not like you, you thief,” Edwin sassed.
“Will both of you stop?” Rayan groaned as if hearing Veronica’s pleading.
“Noh,” Ruth barked at Rayan, then turned to Edwin. “How dare you call me a thief?” she screamed at Edwin, pointing her fingers toward him.
“Because you stole my mate,” Edwin ranted. That’s something he’ll never forget.
“Enough! We are not here to listen to your bickering. We have far more important things to discuss,” Rayan growled at them. Ruth went silent and sat down beside Rayan. Edwin also took a seat beside Veronica. “Now that you have stopped, I will continue. Right now, the safer place for her is the werewolf kingdom. King Martin will do anything to protect the heir to the throne,” Rayan said.
“Heir?” A soft whisper came out of Veronica’s lips.
“Yes, remember you are King Lucian’s daughter, Veronica Alice Reign, the heir of the Royal White Lunar Pack,” Ruth explained. “I think we should leave now towards the kingdom. The sooner, the better,” Ruth said.
“No,” Veronica stated, shaking her head. Everyone looked at her confusedly. “I can’t leave right now. You said your father would do anything to catch me, right?” she asked, looking at Edwin. He nodded in response. “Then he could hurt my mom and dad, right?” Edwin nodded again. “That’s why I can’t leave. I can’t leave my parents behind for them to get hurt,” Veronica said.
“She is right. They could hurt Bella too.” Sam agreed with Veronica.
“You go with Eli and the rest. I will bring your parents,” Edwin told her, caressing her face.
“No, I will go with you,” Veronica argued.
“It’s dangerous.” Edwin tried to reason with her. He wouldn’t ever let his sweet mate be in any danger.
“You said I am stronger. Moreover, you will be with me; you won’t let anything happen to me. Besides, you don’t know my parents like I do. I know how to approach them; you don’t,” Veronica noted. Damn, his woman sure knows how to convince people. Edwin sighed in defeat.
“Alright then, we will wait for you at the pack border tomorrow at this time. Let’s go, Ruth,” Rayan said, standing up. And without saying another word, he left.
“Be safe,” Ruth said, bidding Veronica goodbye. Veronica looked up at Edwin and noticed he was gazing at her.
“What?”
“When are you ever gonna listen to me?” Edwin asked her curiously. Veronica didn’t respond; instead, she gave him an innocent smile, which could make him forget everything in this world. He slowly placed his lips on hers, devouring the delicious taste of her mouth. The anger, frustration, and fear he was experiencing faded away. Eli was right; she is a drug—their own personal drug.
