Stella’s POV
I was standing at my locker with Bash when Greyson made his way over.
“Ahh! Happy birthday Grey!!” I squealed jumping into his arms. He held me in a tight hug, I felt his shoulders slump a bit, I looked into his eyes and they looked sad. “What’s wrong it’s your birthday!”
“It’s nothing, I just thought maybe...” He trailed off looking deep in thought and genuinely sad, which made me sad looking at him. I knew what he was hoping for, but I also knew I have never viewed him in that way. For me this was NOT a surprise, but by the look on his face it seems to be for him.
Before I could say anything to console him, I was ripped from his arms and pressed against a locker. I felt strong arms holding me in place, while whoever grabbed buried their head into my neck, growling. All I could think was this was quite strange and gave me flashes of that daunting day last year. Except I didn’t feel scared like I had that day. No, I felt safe and oddly at home. And then I heard it. One word.
“MINE.” I was frozen in my spot. Was this person my mate? I wouldn’t know until Wednesday, which was five days away. Suddenly, the growling man was ripped off me and being held back by two of my brothers. Leo and Teo. Then I saw who the culprit was. Malakai.
“Kai?” I whispered. Belle was purring in my head.
“Let. Me. Go. NOW.” He roared at my brothers.
“Why were you touching her?!” Teo growled back at him.
“She’s Mine.” Kai growled back, making my brothers pause in their movements and slowly released Kai’s arms.
“What did you just say?” Bash gritted out.
“Stella is MY mate. Mine. And that mutt had his hands all over her.” He spat with a disgruntled look at Grey.
“How do you know she’s your mate, she isn’t 18 for another 5 days.” Theo questioned.
“Yeah, but I am. Today’s my birthday. She’s my mate. She smells of hazelnut and berries. When I touched her all I could feel was sparks igniting my skin.” Kai said ending in a tone of pure adoration. But I was stuck on how he knew my scent. Only my mate was able to smell it. I obviously knew what I smelt like, but to everyone else I smelled solely of berries. Could he really be my mate?
“How do you know I smell of hazelnut?” I asked in shock.
“Because Baby, like I said. You are my mate.” He answered me in a gentle tone.
“Fuck.” Grey growled from the left of me. We all looked at him in confusion. Well, everyone, except Kai who looked at him with hatred.
“What’s wrong Grey?” I asked quietly.
“He’s pissed you’re not HIS mate.” Kai growled at a forlorn looking Greyson. Grey whipped his head in Kai’s direction and snarled at him.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Grey said through gritted teeth.
“Ah except I have seen the way you watch her. The way you pine over her. Over what’s MINE. She is NOT yours and will NEVER be yours.” Kai said with a tone that meant he was serious, deadly serious. I was starting to get a headache.
“ENOUGH.” I shouted out. Freezing everyone in their spot. “Guys can you give us a minute alone please.”
“No.” All four of my brothers said in unison.
“Please.” I said with a pout I knew they could never deny. With a sigh they grabbed Grey and pulled him away towards first period. “Follow me.” I said to Kai walking towards an empty classroom.
Kai’s POV
As I followed my mate into the empty classroom, I couldn’t take it anymore. I need to touch her. I quickly pushed her against the wall and pressed myself flush with her. I heard her breath hitch and the smirk that left my lips couldn’t be stopped.
“Hi baby.” I whispered against her ear, causing her to shiver. I loved how well her body reacted to me. I knew it was a subconscious response since her soul and body knew I was her mate, even if she didn’t yet.
“Hi.” She said with a squeak. I let out a husky laugh.
“Why are you so nervous my love?” I asked gently. I wanted her to know I could never hurt her.
“I’m not nervous. But could you please give me some space. I can’t think with you so close to me. How do I know you’re truly my mate?” She said in way that sounded as if she were annoyed. But it was me who was angry at her words.
“Why would I lie?! And if I weren’t your mate, how the f**k would I know what your scent smelt like?” I questioned through gritted teeth, unknowingly tightening my hold on her.
“Oww. You’re hurting me.” She whimpered, snapping me into reality. I immediately released her with an ashen face.
“f**k. I’m so sorry Stella. I didn’t mean to hold you so tight.” I said with pleading eyes. I didn’t want her upset with me.
‘Don’t piss mate off!’ Mav roared in my head.
‘Sorry! I didn’t mean to.’ I whispered back to him, feeling ashamed.
“It’s okay. I’m fine, sorry for upsetting you. It’s just weird not being able to feel the mate bond yet and someone telling you that you’re their mate.” She said while looking at me, her eyes softening a bit.
“When’s your birthday?” I ask gently.
“On Wednesday, so five days from now.” She said in a sweet voice.
“Okay, let’s make a deal.” I began, trying to ease the tension I caused.
“A deal?” She asked with a twinkle in her eyes, I could sense her excitement.
“Yes baby, a deal. Go on a date with me tomorrow. I just want a night to get to know you. And then I’ll stay home from school until Wednesday. That way I don’t kill anyone for touching you and I don’t overwhelm you with feelings you can’t reciprocate yet.” I let out, attempting to hide the tremble in my voice at the thought of not seeing her for a few days.
“My fathers won’t allow that.” She says sadly.
“Won’t allow you to go on a date?” I question softly, gently stroking her cheek. I can’t help the need to touch her.
“Not unless they’re 100% sure I’m your mate. Which won’t happen until Wednesday. Even then they’ll probably be tough on you.” She answers sheepishly.
“They can’t keep us apart. You belong with me.” I can’t help the small growl that escapes my chest. She senses my rising anger then suddenly; I feel immense calmness take over me. “What was that?” I ask her confused.
“One of my gifts. I can project a calming aura around people who are getting upset or angry.” She says with a small smile. All I can do is look at her in complete awe.
“Wait one of your gifts? You have other ones?” I asked shocked.
“Yeah. I can communicate with anyone’s wolf, I can sense extreme emotions and help calm them, and I can sense when someone is hiding something, basically I have a built in lie detector in me.” She says with a small laugh.
“If you can sense when someone is hiding something…then you know.” I state matter-of-factly.
“What, that you’re telling me the truth about being my mate?” She asks with a sly smirk on her face.
“So, you know I’m telling the truth?” I meant it as a statement, yet it came out as a question.
“Well, yeah I know you’re telling the truth. But…don’t get angry, okay?” She says in a rush.
“What is it?” I ask cautiously.
“Just promise me you’ll stay calm.” She pleads with her eyes. I can’t deny her when she’s looking at me like that.
“I promise baby.” I smile reassuringly at my tiny mate.
“Well, last year a senior boy took quite the obsession over me. He would stalk me and follow me around everywhere I went. When he turned 18, he told my parents and me that he was my mate.” She stopped at the sound of my growl, I gave her a sheepish smile and told her to continue the story. But all I could feel was the urge to find this scumbag and kill him. My wolf was raging in my head to hunt him down.
“Anyways, he didn’t know that my mom had already seen him in a vision lying to us about this. Nor did he know of my gift of sensing when someone was lying. He went on and on about how I belonged to him and that he would mark me. He even told my father’s he wouldn’t wait for me to come of age. His obsession was too far gone. Even if my mother and I didn’t have these gifts it would have still been a far fetch for him to be my mate. I am as pure blooded an Alpha as anyone could get. The chances of my mate not being an Alpha or maybe a Beta was slim to none. But this boy couldn’t think rationally. When he tried to mark me, even after my fathers had forbidden him my parents were left with no other choice.” She finished her tale and began to rub soothing circles on both of my hands.
“Where is he?” I asked through gritted teeth.
“Ummm, New Red Moon Cemetery.” She said with a sad smile.
“He’s dead?” I asked annoyed that I couldn’t kill him myself.
“Yeah well, my parents don’t take kindly to any threat that comes my way.” Stella says with a small frown.
“Good. At least I know you’ve been safe and protected. I’m sorry that happened to you baby.” I spoke honestly. “Okay, then our first date will have to wait I suppose. After you turn 18. But then, you’re all mine.” I say with a bright smile.
“I’m going to have to leave them, won’t I?” She asks sadly, tears shining in her eyes.
“I mean, I would prefer my mate to be with me.” I say with a sad smile at the thought of her not wanting to be with me.
“It’s not that I don’t want to be with you. It’s nothing personal. It’s just…I always dreaded the day I would have to leave my family.” She says with a shaky bottom lip.
“Aw baby. You won’t have to leave right away. And anyways our packs are only a ten-minute drive from one another. You can see your family whenever you want. I promise. I won’t ever keep you from them.” I explain to her with more conviction than I have ever spoke about anything. And I meant it. I wouldn’t keep her from her parents or her brothers. I would do anything to make her happy. “I will do everything in my power to make you happy.”
“I know you will.” She says with a smile that could allow me to die happy here and now.
“Can I kiss you?” I whisper inches away from her lips.
“Not yet. I want our first kiss with each other to feel the same for both of us. And that won’t happen until I can feel the sparks.” She says in a gentle tone, but her voice is the sweetest melody I have ever heard.
“Fair enough. But baby?”
“Hmm?”
“Be ready on Wednesday to have these perfect lips ravished.” I say with a cocky smirk, I can see she’s already starting to hate. I can’t help but laugh at her flushed cheeks. “You like that thought don’t you baby?” I coo in her ear. She pushes against my shoulders and glares at me.
“We better get going if we want to make it to second period, since you already made me miss first.” She says trying to sound annoyed, but I can tell she’s only trying to get out of answer my question.
“Fine. After you beautiful.” I motion for her to go ahead of me, and she makes her quick escape.
