Two Weeks Later
Kate had her final blood work drawn and Monica was waiting for us when we got home. She just got back with Aden from school and was starting to make dinner. I just have my last date with Cara tonight and then the Obsidian Ocean Pack’s ball tomorrow night. I had Monica booked till Sunday morning when our other nanny Jade would take over until I got home.
I wasn’t sure how long I would be stuck at the Obsidian Pack especially since I wasn’t pack connected and I didn’t have all the details of where we would be staying since the hierarchy werewolf we were meeting was part of the Obsidian Pack. He could very well have a suite in the packhouse, a separate home, or even be staying in the hotel by where the party was being hosted.
Tonight I really felt like I was just going through the motions. I went to the agency to get my clothes for my night with Cara. Cara and I went out on her yacht and then back to her penthouse at the Evermount. I did everything she wanted me to do. But I mostly listened to her talk and it felt like I didn’t even hear myself speak when I did.
I know basically running on autopilot, I wasn’t giving her my full attention or best effort. In the morning, over our usual breakfast on the balcony, she started getting really emotional.
“I don’t want to leave you, Sky.” She started saying.
I thought back to her file, this was our last date because she was moving away. So I asked, “Then why do you have to go, cutie?”
“I already said I was moving.” She whined.
“I know that. But you hadn’t explained why that meant we couldn’t still see each other sometimes?” I used my sweet seductive voice to ask her. I forced myself to be in the present. I had to snap out of autopilot mode.
“I have to go to Europe to run our international office. It would be too hard to get enough time off to fly back to the States.” She lamented. Then she pressed, “But you could come with me.”
“What do you mean?” I inquired, dropping the sweet tone.
“I’ll give you everything you want.” She started explaining. “If you don’t want to live with me, I’ll buy you, your own flat. I’ll pay for you to go to the best university or music conservatory there. You’ll eat the finest foods everyday. I’ll take care of everything and I’ll spoil you.”
“Wait… Wait wait. You’re saying you want me to just up and move to Europe. And you’ll be like my Sugar Lady or something?” I blurt out without thinking it through completely, feeling badly about how rude that may have come across. I’m definitely not on autopilot anymore. I know I’m not supposed to sound rude to clients but she caught me completely off guard.
“If that’s what you need to label it.” She said nonchalantly. “Look, I don’t mind paying for what I want. I don’t believe in 'happily ever after’s'. And just because I have a decent body, I wasn’t blessed with the looks to match.”
“Don’t denigrate yourself, you’re pretty…” I started defending. I was trained to be uplifting. And she really isn’t bad looking. Others may say her face is kind of 'plain Jane', just someone you wouldn't automatically notice right away.
“No, I’m not. I actually used to be uglier. I had plastic surgery to look better but they couldn’t do anything more because I couldn’t handle the anesthesia.” She hands me a picture of herself when she was a teen. I know better than to say anything at that point. It would be worse to say something condescending like “looks aren’t everything”.
So instead I give her a sorry look and gesture for her to continue. “I’ve tried real relationships. The only girl I thought I truly loved before, when things ended, she threw back every flaw and insecurity about myself in my face. So I tried to fix it. I got super into fitness and had the surgery.
I threw myself more into my work until I was at the very top. And I stopped caring about having to pay for love or companionship. It was simple. Like business transactions. But where I got everything I wanted. And the young girls that serviced me always were treated extremely well. Do you agree?”
“Yes you’re very thoughtful and take me on amazing dates. Anyone would be lucky to be with you.” I reply sincerely, honestly wishing her a happier future. But still internally stressing, 'just not with me'.
“Then come with me.” She said again. She held my hand in hers when she pleaded with me this time. “I’ve never been happier than my nights spent with you.”
“I can’t.” I say before standing up. I knew I needed to leave before things got more complicated.
“Why not?” She asked.
“There has to be plenty of beautiful girls in Europe who will please you.” I say and I realize I didn’t really answer her question. I walk towards the door to her balcony.
“No.” She says and blocks my way. “They won’t be you.”
“I’m sorry.” Is all I can think to reply.
“Please.” She says and this time I can hear a tearing up in her voice. “I think I’ve fallen in love with you.”
I stop trying to leave and step back further away from her. I don’t know what to say. Now looking at her, rather than the strong powerful businesswomen who just wants to let loose, I see someone fragile. She’s wearing a mid-thigh chiffon summery dress and a red cardigan. She’s taller than me with bigger boobs and a booty to boast about but right now she just seems so small. She looks far away, holding herself together like a teenager who just got their heart stomped on for the first time.
I instinctively reach out to her but stop myself. I would normally hold the client, whisper sweet nothings and sooth them until they were good enough for me to give them an o****m to feel better. But I knew that wasn’t what she needed. It would make things worse because she let feelings get involved.
“You don’t love me, Cara.” I say firmly but not harshly. Just so there’s no room for miscommunication.
“What… what do you mean? Yes I do. I love you Sky.” She says and this time there are a few tears.
“No you don’t.” I say and take another step back calmly. “You can’t love someone if you don’t know them.” I take a deep breath and think a moment before continuing. I carefully word what I have to finish saying. “The agency that arranged our date, they makes up profiles for the ladies that work there. They kept some of the details similar to who we are but some things are changed for privacy purposes, or to make us more appealing or even just easier to understand.”
She seems really surprised because of how much I told her about Sky. And then her expression starts to harden before changing to a look of betrayal as I finish with. “My name isn’t even Sky. So you can’t be in love with me. And I can’t go to Europe with you. I’m really truly sorry.”
I turn to leave but I feel conflicted about leaving her like that. I take my time changing back into what I wore when I got here yesterday. I get my bag from where I stash it in the bathroom and sit down to put my shoes on.
Cara walks back into the room and then stands by the bed facing me. “You said they keep some details similar. How much of it was really you?”
I sigh at that question. “Sky is who I wanted my life to be, minus working for the agency. I really was accepted to Julliard and several other prestigious conservatories before moving here. Everything I said about Sky is exactly what I would be doing right now if I had the option.”
“I could have given you that option, you know?” She points out.
“No. You couldn’t have.” I say quietly as I finally leave.
“You’ll regret this, whoever you really are.” I hear her mutter to herself. I know she thinks I couldn’t hear that last statement, her empty threat, but my werewolf hearing picked it up.
