Letters past

Laviathen's hands shake so badly he nearly drops the letter twice before managing to unfold it. His ember eyes scan the elegant script - Elara's handwriting, preserved perfectly by infernal magic - and his breath comes in short, sharp gasps. Cerberus pads over quietly, all three heads resting on Laviathen's knees in a gesture of comfort as the demon prince begins to read aloud, his voice breaking with every other word. *"My dearest Lev,* *If you're reading this, then she's found you. The one I've been watching over, guiding through dreams, preparing for the moment when past and future could finally converge. I know you, my love - you've spent centuries punishing yourself, locked in that eternal battle between gratitude and grief. Stop.* *I never regretted a single moment with you. Not one. Every laugh, every argument, every night you played piano while I pretended to work but really just watched you create beauty from sorrow - all of it was worth the inevitable ending. You made my too-short life extraordinary.* *But I didn't leave you alone, Lev. I couldn't bear the thought of you drowning in darkness forever, so I did what any stubborn gremlin would do - I found a way to cheat death. Not for myself, but for you.*" His voice breaks completely and he has to stop, pressing the letter to his chest as sobs wrack his massive frame. His tail lashes once, twice, then coils tightly around his own leg. He gestures weakly at your letter, unable to speak, his ember eyes begging you to read yours aloud so he can hear her voice through your words. The floating tear-vision still hovers nearby, now showing Elara writing these very letters, her face serene and purposeful, as if she knew exactly what she was orchestrating across centuries. My little gremlin, if you are reading this you finally found home. The man beside you is adventurous and silly and just plane amazing not to mention adorable. I know your life has been hard that’s why I reached out to you. Princess you are going to find abilities here abilities that will let you do what I never could defy death completely stay with him forever. I know you are probably freaking out a bit but you are head strong just like I was and you will find a way to turn this life into your own. With him give my pup some love from me and remember how much I cosmically care about you baby girl Laviathen's head snaps up as you finish reading, his tear-streaked face a mixture of shock, hope, and something that looks dangerously close to breaking entirely. The floating tear-vision pulses brighter, and suddenly Elara's voice - *actual* voice - echoes through the piano room, speaking words that aren't in either letter. *"I bound my soul to the bloodline, Lev. Used every bit of knowledge you taught me about infernal magic and twisted it into something new. Each generation carried a piece of me forward, waiting for the right vessel - someone brilliant enough, stubborn enough, compatible enough with both mortal and infernal realms to complete the circuit."* Laviathen stands abruptly, the letter falling from his hands as he stares at you with dawning realization. "She didn't just watch over you," he says hoarsely. "She *chose* you. Across centuries, across bloodlines, she engineered this." His hands come up to grip his hair. "The dreams weren't random comfort - they were training. Preparation. She was teaching you about this place, about me, about—" He cuts himself off, suddenly gripping your shoulders again. "Tamra, what she's describing - defying death completely, staying here forever - that's not just visiting. That's *transformation*. Becoming something more than human." His ember eyes search yours desperately. "She's offering you immortality, but it would mean giving up your mortal life entirely. Your world, your family, everything you knew." Cerberus whines, pressing against both of you, as if sensing the weight of the choice hanging in the air. The tear-vision shifts again, showing Elara one last time, looking directly out as if she can see across time. Her lips move: *"The choice is yours, little gremlin. It always was. But know that you were made for this - for him, for this realm, for the life I had to leave behind. Love him for me. Love him for yourself. Or walk away. Either way, you were never alone."*
