Chapter 1: Loss
My name is Kiara and I am 21 years old. I am a 5ft 8 girl with long light mousy brown hair that falls to my rear end in beach waves. My skin is a golden tan with a yellow undertone and my eyes are a mix of golden brown and forest green. I have 2 sisters, one older and one younger, both the complete opposite to one another. My parents live abroad for work but come back every few months to the house they own here, which my siblings stay at, and I live with my boyfriend of 6 years. We live in a small country where everyone knows everyone, and it’s great, but like most places, it has its downsides. Unfortunately, our little country has a bad reputation. People riot frequently and more often than I care to admit, not everyone makes it out of those riots. They riot over politics and, if I’m honest, it’s not something I understand, so I just stay away. One of my sisters has surrounded herself with the likes of those who riot, and I worry about her, whereas the other prefers to let people do as they please so long as they don’t involve her. Me, on the other hand, if someone approaches me threateningly, I become an instant hothead, ready for a fight. Other than the rioting, I believe my country is beautiful. It has wide-spread lands of green grass and fields of crops. The forests are small but just as beautiful. A lot of people are actually really nice, but you have to know the difference, as some are wolves in sheep's skin. I have a small circle of friends but that’s the way I like it. My family has always supported me and my boyfriend has been nothing but good to me. All of them mean the world to me and without them I would be lost.  It’s mid January now and my parents are due to be home in the morning. I am excited about seeing them but I have this unknown feeling of something bad. I just don’t know what yet. My boyfriend, Eli and I have both been working all day, so when we got home I picked out a movie for us to watch. Our house is small but we both love it as it makes it more cosy in our eyes. Eli is 6ft2 and has the most gorgeous pair of baby blue eyes that allow me to get lost in them. He has short blonde hair styled into a neat quiff and he looks good with it that way. We cuddle on our sofa and watch the movie, then head to bed once it finishes. It’s now 5.30 in the morning and my phone is ringing, “Who in the hell is ringing me at this time in the morning?” I thought to myself as I remembered that mum had said she and dad would be getting a cab home. They would have landed a couple hours ago though. I looked at the screen when it wouldn’t stop and saw it was an unknown caller ID. I answered, sounding groggy due to my tiredness and the time it was, “Hello?”. “Is this Kiara Mcclease?” responded a male's voice which I didn’t recognise. “Yes, now who is this and why are you calling me at this hour of the morning?” “This is the International Policing Agency, my name is Detective Lowder. We need you and your siblings to come down to Ashton Road Police Station as soon as possible.” I sat up at this, now wide awake, what’s happened? It can't be any of my sisters as he asked me to bring them too. “What is going on?” I asked with worry in my voice. Eli was beginning to wake up and asked what was going on. “I think it best for you to get to the station so we can talk,” the detective replied. “I will be there in half an hour.” I have just got my sisters into my car, with Eli driving. They were agitated at the fact I woke them up so early but began to sit in a quiet panic when we pulled into the Police station. We all hurried in, “Detective Lowder called me, he said we needed to come here but didn’t say why.” I huffed at the lady in reception, her expression showing pain and sorrow when she saw us, but it wasn’t for herself. “You must be the McClease sisters.” said a familiar voice. I turned along with Eli and my sisters to see a detective standing with a solemn look on his face. “I’m detective Lowder, come with me and we can speak.”. I nodded at him and grabbed Eli’s hand whilst glancing at my sisters. Upon entering his office, I gestured for my sisters to sit in the seats provided while I stood behind them. “There is no easy way of saying this so I am just going to say it.” The detective began. “Unfortunately we have received notice that the aeroplane your parents were on has crashed. So far there have been no survivors. Some of the medics we sent to the site of the crash have brought back numerous bodies and we need to confirm the identification of them. I am sorry to say, but we need one of you to identify 2 of them.” he finished. By now my sisters were bawling their eyes out, and I held each of their hands in mine. I can tell I am in shock, as once those words left his mouth, time seemed to have slowed down and my tears would not fall. I could feel Eli’s hand on my shoulder and when I turned to look at him his eyes were red, he was trying to stay strong for us. “I will do it.” I spoke after what seemed like eternity.  The detective took me to a room and when I looked up I saw a window looking into a steel-grey room with 2 bodies on gurneys, both covered with off-white coloured sheets. “Are you ready?” He asked me, to which I responded with a slight nod. He then pressed a button and said go ahead, then I saw someone dressed in a long white apron, gloves and a mask come in and remove the sheet of one of the bodies. I clutched my heart at what I saw, “Mama…” My voice was quiet and filled with pain as I felt my heartbeat slow, then the sheet was pulled down from the next body, “Daddy…” I said in a whisper with my knuckles turning white from trying to stop my heart from hurting. I can’t stop the tears from flowing, I am now on my knees and the pain in my heart is unbearable. The detective placed a hand on my shoulder and allowed me to cry. After about 15 minutes, I managed to gather myself. As we are walking back to where my sisters and boyfriend are, Detective Lowder asks, “Would you like me to inform your family?” “No, I need to be the one to tell them.” I said with a shaky voice. He gave me a sad look but stayed silent. My sisters looked at me with tearful eyes, “They didn’t make it.” I said, my voice cracking in the process and fresh tears beginning to fall. They both ran to me and wailed. Both my sisters are quite small in comparison to me, making it easy for me to hold them close at the same time. Then I felt Eli, joining from beside us.  We just got home after burying our parents. I decided to stay with my sisters as I felt it would be better for us all to be together over this period of grief. Eli stayed too and made sure we all took care of ourselves. I loved him for how good he was with my sisters and how well he and my family got on. My older sister has started participating in more riots even though I begged her not to, she is taking her anger out on others, whereas my younger sister has been isolating herself in her bedroom.
