When I next opened my eyes, I saw Marnie sitting by my bed. I felt much stronger and was able to take the buttered toast and hot drink which she offered. The drink was a little like black tea. “What day is it?” I asked when I had swallowed the last of the drink. Marnie took the cup from me and replied. “You’ve been asleep for ten hours. It’s midday on Friday 12th July. How do you feel?” “Better. Much better.” “Do you feel well enough to wash?” I looked at myself and laughed. I was wearing a loose, knee-length garment with elbow-length sleeves made out of thin white cloth. It was now grubby and smelled of stale sweat. “If I have been here for over a fortnight then I should definitely wash. What about my hair? Will they have anything I can use?” Marnie answered yes and pulled a bell.
