Chapter 7
Maddox POV
S.hit, is my first thought on waking up this morning. I didn’t have a chance to talk to Kara last night because she was already asleep by the time I finished speaking with my father. She was not going to be happy about this, but my father had a point last night and the more I thought about it the more I agreed with him. Yes, I wanted to take over as King and finally have my mate.
“Not our mate,” Leo growls, interrupting my train of thought.
He’s been more present in my mind lately, ever since we found Lucy that is, and honestly it was freaking annoying. I chose to ignore him and think of the best way to approach this with Kara. It wasn’t long until she came crashing into my room, even though we were together it wasn’t a love match so she slept in her room and I slept in mine. We had adjoining doors, but we rarely spent the night in each other’s rooms, even when we slept together we just did what we had to do to settle our beasts then went back to our respective rooms.
“Maddox, I just had the most delicious breakfast I have ever had. Bringing that Omega girl along from the other pack was a stroke of genius! This is going to be the best week and our food will definitely be the talk of everyone at the ceremony.”
“Listen Kara about that,” I choose to ignore the way she harps on about Lucy. I need to avoid being around her, seeing her, hearing her, f***k even thinking about her. “I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear but we’re going to have to postpone the ceremony.”
She stared at me for a minute before she started laughing, I gave her a moment before clearing my throat to bring her back to reality, “Wait are you freaking serious?”
“Yes I am.”
“What the f***k Maddox why? And why are you telling me one week before?”
“This wasn’t my decision but if you sit down I can explain.”
“Sit down? Sit down? You just want me to sit down so you can explain?”
I raise my eyebrow at her, “Yes, that’s exactly what I just said.” I should probably take it easy on her, I know she was in disbelief and probably not thinking straight, hell less than 24 hours earlier I was doing the same thing. “Look, I know this isn’t easy but please I will explain everything and it’s not an indefinite postponement.”
“Fine,” she snaps out before throwing herself into the chair in the corner of my room.
“I spoke with my father last night when we got back. He thinks that we need to postpone because of a dangerous threat that has reached his ears. An enemy he once thought gone has resurfaced right before our ceremony. He’s concerned it has to do with the passing of the crown and instead of having a gathering of the most powerful leaders in out kingdom in one spot, which would be an easy target, he would like to eliminate the threat first.”
“Oh, is that all? An enemy is threatening us, when isn’t an enemy threatening us? So we’re just going to give in and do probably exactly what they want so they win?”
“I’m not going to lie my reaction was the same at first, but this isn’t an enemy either of us have faced before. My father never even faced him, my grandfather did and he almost completely destroyed our existence before he was taken down. This is a threat unlike anything we are familiar with and is a hundred times more dangerous than any we’ve known.”
“You’re being completely serious right now aren’t you?”
“Listen, I know this is not ideal. I’ve been waiting for this moment for as long as I can remember but we are going to be taking over as King and Queen. That means putting this pack first, putting our people first and if delaying the accession ensures that we are going to be able to save our people from war that that is what we have to do.”
“Ugh, I guess. I still hate it though but I’m willing to agree to the postponement,” I scoff at that statement, as if she has a choice. She glares at me but then keeps talking, “as long as you explain to my father why it’s happening.”
“Kara, I’m not going to do that and neither are you. We’re going to have to come up with another reason for the postponement until my father decides it’s time to tell people what’s going on. We can’t risk causing a panic until we know more, and we can’t show our cards about knowing what’s going on.”
“Are you serious? Do you know how it’s going to make me look when you postpone this without a reason?”
“Hence why I said we will come up with one. Do you understand what I said about becoming the rulers of these packs?” She stared at me open mouthed, probably because of my tone but she was starting to annoy me. How could she not understand this? “This is not about you and me Kara, I’ve been preparing for this role much longer than you have and I was able to come to terms with it. You’re going to have to stop being so Godd.amn selfish and think about something other than yourself right now.”
“Well excuse me,” she yells bolting from the chair and heading towards the door into her room. “Excuse me for being disappointed that my mate doesn’t want to have our ceremony, that I’m going to be a laughingstock. You better come up with a good reason for this postponement Maddox because I won’t be made fun of for this.” I didn’t know what else to say so I just let it go, I knew she wasn’t going to say anything. She might be selfish and arrogant but she’s not stupid. She knows there are certain lines she can’t cross if she is going to remain my chosen, and going against something both my father and I have said is a surefire way to get herself ousted.
I got changed and made my way down to the gym to spar with whoever I could find because I needed to work this tension out. I found Chad my Beta, perfect I needed someone I didn’t have to take it easy on. “Chad,” I yell to him, “you wanna get in the ring with me?”
“Sure, I love hitting your face first thing in the morning.” I grunt at him as I hop up and stretch a bit waiting for him to get up here with me.
“I’m not in the mood to take it easy today you good with that?”
“Whatever you need man,” that’s why I love my Beta, he’s always there for whatever I need. We go at it for about twenty minutes before I finally sit down and take a break. “What’s wrong with you?”
“S.hitty day.”
“Already, d.amn, it’s only nine.”
“We need to postpone the ceremony. Kara’s pissed off, I don’t think she’ll run her mouth but I’m annoyed she doesn’t seem to get it.”
“Oh wow, what the hell happened that made you push it?”
I look around at all the warriors getting to the gym for training before turning back to him, “Not here, we’ll talk about it later. I need to speak with my father this morning anyway I’ll fill you in after.”
“It’ll be okay, we’ll get through this we always do. Hey, why don’t we go out tonight? You look like you could use a break.”
“Sure what the hell, I could use a night out.”
“Meet me out front 10 o’clock tonight we’ll hit a club. I’ll get us a VIP section.”
“Perfect.” I get up and head back to my room to shower, there’s a plate of food in my room and I can tell that Lucy made it. f***k I’m never going to get this girl out of my head am I? I shower then go meet my father, we go over the details of what he told me last night and decide that we need to do a little more research on this Proteus guy before making our next step. Security has been tightened and patrols increased but we aren’t willing to do anything to make this spiral out of control until we know everything. I’ve already set up a meeting with our pack historian and placed calls in to a few other pack historians of the packs that were most affected by him. I’ve also managed to avoid Kara and Lucy all day so by the time I meet Chad I’m in a better mood than I was this morning.
We pull up to the club and head right inside, there’s no waiting in line for us. As soon as we get inside though Leo gets agitated. We head up to the VIP section before I realize what the problem is.
“Oh hey look, aren’t those some of the Omegas from our pack? We should go say hi or something, it’s good for morale to have their future King pay attention to them. Holy s.hit dude, who’s the new girl? She is hot as f.uck.”
I don’t even need him to say who he’s looking at because I already know. Lucy is here.
