Chapter 1: Marked for Betrayal
The full moon hung above the trees like a watchful eye, glowing silver against the night sky. The air in Moonveil Valley was cool and still, filled with the soft rustling of leaves and the distant howls of wolves. Tonight was supposed to be the most beautiful night of Luna Grey’s life.
Tonight, she would be claimed by her fated mate.
Luna stood near the center of the ceremonial grounds, wrapped in a soft blue dress that shimmered under the moonlight. Her heart pounded with nervous excitement. Her long brown hair fell in gentle waves down her back, and her soft hazel eyes searched the growing crowd. She saw familiar faces—elders, warriors, omegas—all gathered to witness the sacred moment. The pack’s bonfire burned bright in the center, sending sparks flying into the sky.
But Luna only cared about one person.
Alpha Kade Blackthorn.
Her mate. Her destiny.
At least, that’s what she had believed all these years.
Kade stood tall across the clearing, his powerful frame outlined by firelight. He was everything a strong Alpha should be—commanding, feared, and dangerously handsome. His dark eyes were unreadable, and his black hair was slicked back, giving him an even colder appearance than usual.
Luna’s heart jumped when their eyes met. For a brief second, she saw the boy he used to be—the one who used to sneak her wildflowers, the one who once promised her the moon.
But something in his gaze was different now.
Distant.
Empty.
Still, she held onto hope. Tonight, they would be bonded forever. Their souls would merge under the blessing of the Moon Goddess. No matter what had changed, the bond between fated mates couldn’t be denied.
Or so she thought.
“Luna.” A soft voice pulled her from her thoughts.
She turned and saw her best friend, Mia. Her brown eyes were wide with concern.
“You sure you’re ready for this?” Mia whispered.
Luna gave a small nod, though doubt lingered in her chest. “He’s my mate. Everything will be okay after tonight.”
Mia bit her lip. “Just be careful. People are saying strange things lately… about Kade.”
“What kind of things?”
Before Mia could answer, a deep, commanding growl echoed through the forest. The crowd fell silent.
Kade stepped forward.
Dressed in black with the crest of the Darkfang Pack across his chest, he radiated dominance. The silence around him was so thick, it felt like the air itself held its breath.
Luna walked to meet him, her legs trembling but steady. This was the moment she had waited for her entire life.
Kade’s deep voice echoed through the clearing. “Tonight, I stand before you to honor our sacred laws. I, Alpha Kade Blackthorn of the Darkfang Pack, accept—”
He paused.
Luna waited, heart pounding.
“—accept Raven Thorn as my fated mate.”
The world stopped.
Luna blinked, confused. Surely, she had misheard.
“Kade…” Her voice was barely a whisper.
But he wasn’t looking at her. He was holding another woman’s hand.
Raven.
Tall, sleek, with jet-black hair and eyes like a predator’s. She stepped out from behind Kade with a cruel smirk on her lips.
Luna’s breath caught in her throat. “No… this isn’t right. I’m your mate.”
Kade’s face turned hard, expressionless. “I reject you, Luna Grey.”
Gasps broke out across the pack. A few wolves lowered their heads. Others just stared in disbelief.
Luna stumbled back, the words slicing through her like blades.
“No…” she whispered. “You can’t. You’re mine. We’re meant to be.”
Kade’s voice remained cold. “I reject you. You’re weak. I need someone stronger by my side.”
Raven stepped closer, proudly clutching his arm. “You really thought he would choose you?” she mocked. “You’re nothing but a soft-hearted omega in disguise.”
Luna’s chest tightened. The pain of rejection spread like fire through her blood. Her wolf whimpered inside, wounded and confused.
“You promised me,” she said through tears. “You said we’d rule together.”
Kade didn’t even flinch. “I changed my mind.”
A sob escaped her lips as the bond between them began to tear. She fell to her knees, her hands clutching her chest.
The pain was unbearable.
Not just emotional—but physical. Like her heart was being ripped out piece by piece.
No one came to help her. Not the elders. Not the warriors. Not even her own father, Beta Grey, who stood frozen in shock.
Only Mia rushed to her side, wrapping her arms around her.
“Luna, breathe,” she whispered, tears in her eyes. “We’ll leave. You don’t deserve this.”
Luna shook her head, still in disbelief. “Why would he do this? Why?”
Kade and Raven walked away without another glance.
The moment the firelight faded from their figures, Luna knew.
Her old life was gone.
Everything she believed in—destroyed.
The next day, Luna didn’t get out of bed. Her room was dark, her curtains drawn shut. She lay curled on her side, staring blankly at the wall.
Her wolf was silent.
Her soul felt hollow.
There was a knock at the door.
“Go away,” she mumbled.
But the door opened anyway.
Her father stepped in, his face pale, his eyes troubled.
“Luna,” he said softly. “There’s something you need to hear.”
She didn’t move.
“Kade… he’s announced his engagement to Raven. The ceremony is tonight.”
Luna felt the final c***k in her heart.
He didn’t just reject her.
He was marrying the she-wolf who ruined her life.
“He also claims she’s pregnant,” her father added quietly.
That was it.
The final betrayal.
Luna sat up slowly, her hands clenched into fists. Her chest burned, but her eyes were dry.
“Let them have each other,” she said quietly. “But I won’t stay here. Not anymore.”
Her father looked down. “Where will you go?”
“I don’t know,” she whispered. “But anywhere is better than here.”
That night, Luna stood at the edge of Moonveil’s borders with a small bag over her shoulder. Mia hugged her tightly.
“Please be careful,” Mia said through tears. “Don’t let them break you.”
Luna nodded. “They already tried. But I’m still standing.”
She turned and looked one last time at the place she once called home.
Then, she stepped into the forest, the trees swallowing her whole.
Every step forward was painful, but necessary.
She didn’t know where the road would lead.
But she knew one thing—she would never let anyone destroy her again.
She would become strong.
For herself.
For her broken wolf.
Far behind her, hidden deep in the trees, a pair of glowing red eyes watched her leave.
A low growl rumbled through the shadows.
“She doesn’t know the truth yet,” a voice whispered. “But she will.”
The wind howled through the valley as the moon began
to fade behind the clouds.
Luna Grey was gone.
But her story?
It was only just beginning.
