It was noon and the boys just finished in the hospital. They were given their meals and they carried them to their room. "Gosh! I am so tired! Today's work at the hospital was f*****g tiring." Alex said in his deep voice as he sat on his bed to eat. Alex was the tallest of them all, with a deep coarse voice which was the deepest of all their voices. He was also darker than them all. He was nineteen years of age. "Look at the sky, the sun is fully out and we are just having our breakfast," Brawn said pointing to the sky outside the window. They were having mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy with roasted antelope meat. "Lunch, you mean? It is noon already." Luke corrected. Brawn sighed and shook his head. "I hate days like this when we have to work our ass out." Kite complained with a mouth full of mashed potatoes. "Me too! My wrists f*****g ache from mashing those herbs. We mashed a lot today. I wonder if all the werewolves in the sub-pack are getting their wolves today." Rex seconded Kite. "Speaking of the annual shifting ceremony, here is a quick confirmation. We all agree that we are getting our wolves this shifting ceremony, right?" Alex asked with his left palm raised to the air. "Of course! Luke is already eighteen and three of us are twenty years old. There is no reason for not participating. Hell yes! We are f*****g shifting tonight." Kite responded. "Good! Because I have been looking up to this one." Alex said in a tone of relief. The boys did not partake in the previous shifting ceremonies because Brawn had convinced the boys to boycott them with the excuse that if they shifted, Luke would be left alone in the hospital as he was underaged during the previous shifting ceremonies. It sounded sensible to the boys but the real reason Brawn initiated the idea was that he knew he would be identified as a Brio wolf if he shifted. As a descendant of Alpha Brio, his wolf would be different in characteristics. The boys boycotting the ceremonies got them some punishments by Salutary Hale though. The boys were excited to be shifting that night except for Brawn. He was worried about the fact that his cover was about to be blown and he had run out of options. It was against the pack law for anyone above the age of twenty to be without a wolf. He was going to be twenty-one in a few months and he could not lie about his age because a lot of sentinels knew his age. He could not also go around pretending to have a wolf as every werewolf with a wolf could smell the wolf in anyone. Besides, Salutary Hale had threatened to hand anyone that did not attend that year's annual shifting ceremony over to the sentinels. ."Speaking again of the ceremony," Alex sat up, "Have you all thought of the department you would like to serve in?" Alex questioned. He moved his eyes through the others' faces in anticipation of their response. "Yes . . . come to think of it, I would really love to be a warrior, you know? Where all the actions are. Besides, I really aspire to be a Delta or a Gamma someday . . . or if magic happens, A Beta would be a dream come true." Kite shared his ambition with the others. He had enthusiasm in his voice as he spoke. "Well, I'll like to take care of the injured in the sub-pack, watch over them while they recover after being treated by the Salutary. . .I would rather stay here as a guardian." The angel spoke. He always avoided fights and troubles so it was no surprise he was settling with that. He had always been the gentle and caring one so nobody tried to talk him into choosing another department. "I know you would do a great job as a guardian. That has always been your aspect." Kite encouraged Luke. "Don't worry, Alex would be here with you." Rex teased Alex and poked him with a finger. Everyone knew how much Alex wanted to leave the hospital. If not for the boys, he would have shifted during the last shifting ceremony of the previous year.
