"What?!" Brawn exclaimed out of surprise. "No, ma'am. I just –" Brawn tried to defend himself from the accusation Au had laid on him but Au was not ready to listen. He was not able to make a complete statement because she kept interrupting him.
"If I didn't come here looking for it, you would have sneaked your way out of the pack house, sell the diamond earring and use the money to run to another pack . . . That is your escape plan from your current position in the pack, right?!" Au said as she continued to lambaste him.
Brawn's mouth fell wide open as Au continued to throw accusations at him. He wondered if he had made a mistake by giving her the missing earring. He looked at Sparkle and saw that she was trying to stop Au by holding her by the hand but Au was not yielding.
"Ma'am, It is –" Sparkle wanted to vindicate Brawn but Au's voice was all over the room not letting anyone talk.
"Sparkle, don't try to defend him. I know his type! Innocent face but cunning soul!" Au continued to snarl at him.
Brawn was about to say something but Au scowled at him and said, "One more word and I will report you to the Alpha!"
Brawn decided to keep quiet. He lowered his head back to his omega-like manner and listened to her shower him with words. He concluded that explaining to her was a waste of time. She was the Alpha's sister so his words against hers did not count.
"I'll let this slide but next time, you won't be so lucky," Au said as she turned to head back to her room.
"Thank you, ma'am," Brawn said.
Sparkle felt reluctant to leave. She was feeling sorry for Brawn. She felt he was unjustly accused by Au. She wondered what would have happened if she had earlier told Au that she found him in her room in the sub-pack house during the shifting ceremony. She wanted to talk to Brawn but Au called,
"Sparkle, what are you still doing there? We are getting late."
Sparkle stared at Brawn with compassionate eyes but Brawn was not looking at her. She turned and ran to meet Au.
Brawn continued with his sweeping in silence while Au and Sparkle went to Au's room.
"Ma'am, He wasn't going to sell the earring," Sparkle tried to defend Brawn as she got to the door of Au's room with Au.
"He was going to run away with it then," Au said as she opened the door of her room.
"He didn't steal the earring, ma'am. I am sure he found it while sweeping and wanted to return it after sweeping."
"You can't be sure, my dear. You don't know him at all. He just came to the pack house a few days ago. You can't trust him so easily," Au said as she sat on her chair.
"I don't know him but I feel he is innocent," Sparkle said as she started getting Au's bag ready to leave. Sparkle had an expression of concern on her face.
Au held her by the hand and said, "You don't need to worry yourself with that. I am not going to report him to the Alpha anyway. So cheer up."
Sparkle was eighteen years of age and was a year younger than Au. Au liked Sparkle as a younger sister and everyone in the pack house knew that. She took Sparkle as her best friend and nobody tried to separate them – not even the Alpha. He knew that Au was fond of Sparkle and separating them would affect Au. Au was the last pup of her dad and her three elder sisters were all mated. She got fond of Sparkle and saw her as her close companion. She sometimes spoke to the Luna but was not pretty connected to her as she was with Sparkle.
Brawn finished his first set of chores and went to have his bath. He had to bathe quickly because the omega was about sharing the second set of chores. When he was done, he came out of his room in a dark brown round neck long-sleeved shirt which he folded at the end of the sleeves, a pair of black trousers and his footwear. He had his hair packed such that most of his hair was packed in a ponytail while some hair was left away from the bond at the back and a few strands of his frontal hair were left to stray on his face. He went to join the omegas who were gathering at a spot.
The head omega was waiting for all the omegas to gather together. When they were all there, he began sharing the second lap of chores.
The Head omega dished out chores to the omegas one after the other. When he got to Brawn, he said, "Raw, you are to feed the goats and also join in the distribution section after the hunters come with the hunts for the day. You need to also know how delivery is done here." He placed his right hand on a male werewolf standing by his side and said still looking at Brawn, "So I'm pairing you with Nathan here to distribute meats to the pack."
After every successful hunt, all the games caught were taken to the pack house to be butchered and distributed to all members of the pack according to hierarchy. Every member of the pack was entitled to a share of meat as a privilege for being a member of the pack performing their obligations. The Alpha and the Luna got the most, then the Beta and his Beta female, then the Deltas, then the Gammas, then the Pack warriors, Hunters, Scouts, Salutaries, Guardians and Sentinels. The omegas got the least and also distributed the meat across the pack. Large herds of farm animals were held beside the pack house which were usually butchered to supplement the meat if the hunts were few. The Alpha's share of meat was also set out in the sub-pack and delivered to him always while Beta Sinew got his share from only the sub-pack
"Yes sir," Brawn replied. He took a glance at Nathan and greeted him with a little bow of the head which Nathan reciprocated.
"Nathan, make sure you show him how distribution is done and in the proper manner too," the Head omega instructed Nathan pointing his forefinger at him.
Nathan was a young werewolf but not too young. He had a pup from his mate already and was more mature than Brawn.
"Yes sir," Nathan replied and nodded.
After a while, Brawn finished taking the goats to graze and settled down for his breakfast. He sat on a pavement in the pack house, where he could view the gate because he did not want to miss the hunters when they came. It was a bit lesser in quantity than the one he usually had at the hospital but he had to get used to it. Immediately after eating his meal, the hunters arrived with the morning hunt. He quickly hurried down alongside other omegas to meet them at the slaughterhouse in the pack house. They all waited for the arrival of the head hunter.
The head hunter was the leader of all the hunters in the pack. He was a very experienced hunter and coordinated the butchering of the hunts. He was also responsible for putting new hunters into existing hunting groups created by him. The hunters usually went out to hunt in groups for increased success rate and security of the hunters. He also created a roster for each week. This roster had the morning hunts designated to a group for a week and a different group, the next week. Each group had a very experienced head who led the group on hunts and also reported directly to the head hunter.
"Hey, is that the loser whose wolf did not emerge?" a young hunter who was about nineteen years of age asked another young hunter.
"Sure he is, I have not seen his face here before. He has got to be that douchebag . . . it is definitely him." another young hunter confirmed with a smirk on his face.
The first one shouted to Brawn, "Hey asshole! I have been wanting to tell you! Do you know why your f*****g wolf didn't emerge?! . . . It is because you don't have a wolf! What you have inside of you is a f*****g dog!"
Most of the young hunters roared in laughter. Some of the older hunters smiled while the rest kept quiet. Brawn pretended not to have heard them.
"It is probably a f*****g lapdog!" the other young hunter said to the first young hunter that spoke and it provoked a louder roar of laughter.
Brawn stood there once again pretending not to have heard them. They started jumping around, mimicking the barks of a lap dog. One threw a small stick close to Brawn and another hopped with his back bent, letting out mimicking barks of a lap dog and waggling his butt as he picked up the stick. He wiggled his butt and brushed Brawn on the thigh intentionally with his butt. Brawn grew angry and irritated. He clenched his fist and made a swift movement towards the young hunter but he controlled himself and stopped. He knew that if he still wanted to stay alive, fighting was not an option. If he got into a fight, all odds would be against him. Firstly, he was on probation in the pack, next, he was below the omegas –the least ranking werewolf in the pack–, and next he would be badly beaten or even injured because the person he wanted to fight could shift into a wolf at will. Lastly, if he fought in the pack house of all places, he would be breaking countless pack laws. Brawn looked at the leader of the hunting group who sat laughing at the nasty jokes thrown at Brawn and appeared to be enjoying the show. He did nothing to caution the boys.
"Woah! The lapdog wants to fight!" the young hunter that threw the stick said.
