He looked around and found a napkin on the rectory table. He took the napkin, wrapped the diamond earring and kept it in his pocket. He picked up his broom and kept on sweeping.
Not long, Au came dashing into the refectory room. Brawn quickly stopped sweeping and greeted with his head lowered but Au did not reply to him. She just lowered her back and moved her eyes around the floor.
Brawn wondered if he was to continue sweeping or wait for her to finish her exercise. He decided to wait to avoid sweeping on her. When she bent down and looked under the table, Brawn decided to ask what she was looking for.
"Ma'am, are you looking for something?" Brawn asked her but she did not reply.
Brawn took a glance at her and returned his head to its lowered position.
"Ma'am, if you tell me what you are looking for maybe I might help you search for it. I may have happened to see it," Brawn said to Au.
Au stood up and looked at him. Sparkle walked into the refectory room.
"Did you see it?" Au asked Sparkle anxiously. She had this look on her face begging to yes.
"No, ma'am," Sparkle replied shaking her head.
Au felt her blood rush through her viens. "Did you search properly?" Au asked Sparkle with pleading eyes. She knew Sparkle searched properly but she was looking for a reason to hold onto the last element of hope she had. She was also trying very hard to hold herself from crying. She did not want to cry in Brawn's presence.
"I searched the floor of the passage and the stairs. Everywhere I think you might have walked through but I didn't see it, ma'am," Sparkle replied slowly.
Brawn started to think if the earring he had in his possession was for Au. He took another glimpse at her and saw the same type of earring he had in his pocket, on her right ear lobule. He also noticed her left ear was empty.
Sparkle moved closer to Au and whispered to her, "Ma'am, have you asked him?"
Au said sharply in a whisper, "No! He just came to the pack house yesterday so I don't trust him. He has been asking me what I am looking for but I did not answer him. I just ignored him. If I tell him, he would know that my diamond earring Is missing . . . He will look for it and sell it when he finds it."
"Ma'am, I don't think he is a thief," Sparkle whispered back to Au expressing some confidence in him.
"Why did you say so?" Au whispered, moving closer to Sparkle.
Sparkle decided to tell Au about the night in the sub-pack when she met Brawn in the room. She thought that it would help Au trust him.
She started, "That night at the sub-pack shifting ceremony, remember when you –"
Sparkle could not complete her statement because she was cut off by Brawn's voice interrupting her whisper to Au.
"Is this what you are looking for, ma'am?" Brawn asked.
The two ladies turned their attention to Brawn and saw him holding the missing diamond earring in between the thumb and the forefinger of his right hand. Au quickly moved to him and took it from his fingers. She breathe a sigh of relief as she held it. She did not know when she started to cry. Brawn raised his head when he heard the sound of her cry. Au quickly turned her face away, wiped off her tears and stopped crying.
Au turned back to him and asked, "How come you have it with you?"
"I was cleaning up the floor when I found it –" Brawn explained but was interrupted by Au's rush of words.
"And you did not report it to the Alpha or anybody?! Not even your head omega?!" Au boomed quickly and her expression was turning into a scowl.
"I wanted to take it to–"
"Take it to the marketplace to sell? I knew it! I knew you were a thief!" she snarled.
