"Do you know why he is here?" Au asked Sparkle as she entered her chambers.
"Yes, ma'am. I mind-linked the head omega as we entered the pack building. He told me that the Alpha brought him here to serve as the new least ranking werewolf in the pack till the next shifting ceremony," Sparkle answered.
"And if he doesn't still shift then?"
"He said the Alpha would decide what to do with him then," Sparkle answered. Her head was not bowed as she conversed with Au. Au had told her to put off her omega's manners whenever they were alone. Rather, she should behave as a friend would do. Sparkle had begged Au to let her keep using the word "ma'am" because she did not want to forget herself one day and mistakenly call Au by her name in the public.
"Do you know when he was brought here?" Au asked as she was taking off her clothes.
"This afternoon, ma'am,"
Au nodded as she got ready to have her bath.
"Please, prepare me a cup of tea," Au said as she went into the bathroom.
Later that night, The head omega dismissed the omegas very late. Brawn went to retire in the room allocated to him. He was given a separate room in the omegas quarters as he was not born to any omega. The room was small but Brawn liked it because he had his privacy.
He took his bath and sat down on his bed. His whole body ached like he had been mercilessly beaten with a hammer. He had never worked as much as he worked that day in the pack house when he was at the hospital. All the other omegas did not seem tired. The wolves in them seemed to have energized them with some kind of strength. They sometimes shifted their hands and legs to their wolf form when they were carrying out some chores.
He lay his body on his bed and began to wish he had allowed his wolf to emerge during the shifting ceremony and be killed rather than undergoing the suffering he was passing through without a wolf.
He remembered his encounter with Au and encouraged himself that life in the pack house still had its advantages. He let himself fantasize about how it would feel having her as his mate. He also played with the thought of the possibility of her being his mate. He had fallen for her the first day he saw her but he knew that even if she was fated to be his mate, she and the Alpha would not accept the least ranking werewolf in the pack –him– as her mate.
He shook his head vigorously and forcefully banished the thought out of his mind because such thoughts would only give him some elements of hope and increase his chances of getting into trouble. He had to find a way of subduing his feelings for her before they got out of hand. He stretched his body to the candle on the table by the wall and put it out with his mouth. He lay on his back and slept.
Early the next morning, Brawn was woken by an omega knocking at his door. Every morning, an omega was to wake him up as he was still new to the system and his body had not yet adjusted to the schedule at the pack house.
Brawn opened his eyes halfway and they slowly closed back. He was about to drift back to sleep when the knock came again. This time, the omega called out his name, "Raw, it is time to wake up."
"I'm awake!" He replied to the knock in a sleepy voice.
"I have gone to fetch the water the pups would use in bathing. You are to join me. I will be expecting you," the omega behind the door said and Brawn replied with a "No problem" and the omega left.
He rose himself to a sitting position and finally stood up half asleep. He was feeling sleepy and wanted to sleep some more. He was not used to waking up so early, as a matter of fact, sleeping was part of his hobby and he never played with it. He often overslept at the hospital and the boys covered up for him. The pack house was different. The omegas worked within a time frame.
He lit the candle on the table and went into the bathroom. He packed his hair into a single bond, washed his face and brushed his teeth. He did not bathe because it would take more of his time. He had to finish all his chores before dawn. He had his trousers on so he grabbed a top and put on a foot wear. He dragged his feet out of his room still yawning.
As he came out of his room, he was surprised to see the other omegas so agile, moving about and performing their chores enthusiastically. None of them had an atom of sleep in their eyes. It was very clear that they were used to the system. He shook his head and knew he was on for another stressful day.
He exchanged pleasantries with each omega he passed and envied their tenacity. They were going about their chores tirelessly, effortlessly and zealously. He passed an omega female who was singing and dancing while she was carrying out her chores not minding the fact that she was up very early and supposed to be asleep.
