Chapter 1
A bell sounded out from the hall. A shuffle of footfall could be heard from the corridor as the other housemate wolves left their rooms to begin preparations for the day. Within room number 38, murmurs came from the bedroom as Lauressa began to stir. Her eyes fluttered open as they hazily moved toward the clock sitting on her bedside cabinet. 8:03 it read. She smiled to herself, relaxing back into her duvet and pulling it up to her face. But realisation hit her first; her eyes snapped back open as she read the time more clearly, letting out a small shriek as she did.
She ripped her cover off and swung her legs out of the bed before hastily making her way to the bathroom. There was no time to shower as she reached for the soap and ran the tap. With a flannel in one hand and the soap in the other, she cleaned down the necessary areas. She shoved the toothbrush in her mouth as she scurried back over her room to her wardrobe, pulling out a pair of sports leggings and a top. She scooped up some underwear from her clean laundry and manoeuvred into them, still holding the brush in her teeth. Back in the bathroom, she finished cleaning her teeth and pulled on the rest of her clothes.
Of all the days she had to be late, it had to be today! She had spent the previous night training in her room, getting ready for the ranking tests. She should have gone to bed earlier, but she wanted to make sure she was ready. She spat out the toothpaste before drawing attention to her hair. Nope, no time for styling she thought as she brushed her golden locks into a messy bun. A final glance in the mirror, she nodded with her appearance, though her grey eyes only glared back at her in annoyance.
She jogged her way to the door, stealing a glance at the clock before she pulled the door open. 8:15 it now read. She groaned, pulling the door shut behind her.
Lauressa was currently an unranked wolf. In their 20th year, all wolves must be tested to see if they can excel in the ranks of the pack and be given their roles for life. This allowed them two years of harnessing their wolves which they obtained on their 18th year, ready to use in their later lives. Lauressa was keen on becoming a warrior. It was rare for a female to become a warrior, especially one of her size, but she was eager to show how she could benefit the pack.
She had managed to obtain a punching bag from the local gym. Unranked or lower ranking members weren’t allowed in the pack gym, so the one she had acquired was one of the used and older bags. It was slightly torn, part of the stuffing was coming out, but it served well for someone just starting out. Lauressa had been out one evening, walking home after her duties when she saw the bag sitting near the bins behind the gym. After a quick glance around and no witnesses to be seen, she attempted to carry it with her. It was much heavier than she was expecting, resulting in her having to drag it after a period of time, which didn’t help with the condition that it was in. She did eventually manage to get it back to her dormitory and installed it into her room. She then used the bag for the last six months knowing; the ranking test was coming up.
She joined the rest of her unranked members on the outside of their building. They were lined up, waiting for instruction. She slipped in at the back of the crowd, trying to avert her eyes from their tutor at the front. She was an older Omega, in charge of the unranked members while preparing them for their ranking test. She was a stout woman, with greying hair and greying skin, but her eyes were still piercing blue, especially when staring at unprepared wolves.
“Miss Sinclair, you are late.” Ms Carrol bellowed, her eyes narrowing on the back of the group. Lauressa felt her cheeks redden as numerous eyes from the other unranked members turned and looked at her. She kept her head down, still trying to avoid eye contact with Ms Carrol. “Miss Sinclair.” She bellowed out again. Lauressa looked up, a slight fear flashing in her eyes. Ms Carrol pursed her lips together and gave a quick nod, accepting that Lauressa was now looking at her.
She continued with her briefing, explaining what was to happen during the day. The testing started at 12.30 sharp, which she said with a fleeting glance at Lauressa, and that she expected everyone to be there early to start the proceedings. With a final nod, she informed the wolves that they could continue with their duties until then.
“You can breathe now,” came a chuckle from the side of Lauressa. She looked over, her eyes meeting with another female.
“Yeah, yeah, thanks Freida,” Lauressa replied, pouting her lips as she spoke. Freida laughed, reaching out and patting the shoulder of her friend. Frieda’s dark hair had been pulled back into a ponytail and her dark eyes shone against the morning sun. She was dressed in a tank top and some leggings as well.
“Please tell me you weren’t up all night punching that bloody bag again, were you?” Freida asked, though she already knew the answer. Lauressa scoffed, pulling Freida’s hand down from her shoulder. They were similar height, although Freida was much slimmer and fitter than Lauressa. “Why can’t you be happy as a cleaner or something? You know most of us females don’t get to do the dangerous jobs.” She sighed; it was now her time to pout.
“I know but I will show them I can do it!” Lauressa urged. Freida looked at her, her eyes tracing over her body. Lauressa scoffed again, “Exactly why I need to show them what I can do.” She insisted. Though Lauressa was of an average height at 5’7”, her build was slightly bigger than the others. Her body was certainly considered to be plus sized, although areas had started to tone with the training in her room. Freida raised an eyebrow at her.
“If you say so, you know you have my faith, it’s just the…. Others I worry about.” She said, gesturing to the crowds around her. “Come, we should get going.” She continued, turning on her heel and heading towards the testing area. Lauressa felt a smile spread across her lips as she followed her friend.
Once they had joined the other wolves, they began setting up various areas of the arena that would be used during the tests. There were to be four different areas that the unranked wolves would be judged on. Firstly, the knowledge area, where the wolves would be tested on various subjects, including history of their species, information about other species, pack politics and other miscellaneous subjects. The second area was for strategy, including testing the wolves on their problem solving, quick thinking and team skills. The third area was for combat, where wolves tested their fighting skills, with or without weapons and testing of abilities. The last area was for apothecary, where wolves could create potions from healing draughts to more lethal tonics.
After a few hours, everything had all been set up, from roped off areas to the judges’ quarters. Ms Carrol summoned her students to join her at the food tent. It was 11.30, allowing enough time for them to feed and quench their thirst before the tests began. Lauressa and Freida sat down together at one of the tables, both with rice bowls, filled with chicken and various vegetables. Lauressa sighed, stabbing a broccoli with her fork before placing it in her mouth. She hadn’t had chance to eat in the morning, but she didn’t want to seem so starved to eat the food she had quickly, reluctant to draw any more attention to herself.
Due to her size, she had always drawn attention, but with the tests coming up, she had become much more aware of it. Freida always told her to ignore the looks and taunts, but it was easier said than done when she was perfectly toned in comparison. They sat in silence for a few minutes before they were joined by another unranked wolf.
“Ladies,” he cooed, placing his own rice bowl down before taking the seat next to Lauressa. He smiled broadly; his teeth perfectly aligned which matched with his perfectly aligned body. His eyes were blue and his dusty blonde hair had been gelled back.
“Felix,” the girls said in unison, their eyes not wavering from their food. He held up a hand against his chest, pulling a mocked hurt face as he continued to speak.
“I don’t even get a look! You ladies sure know how to treat a guy.” He whined, spearing at his bowl. Lauressa and Freida exchanged looks and smirks before Lauressa jabbed an elbow into Felix’s ribs. An eruption of laughter came from the trio. “Still going for the warrior job?” He asked, his gaze looking down at Lauressa.
“You know it,” She replied between mouthfuls as she continued to spoon food into her mouth. “You?” she quizzed.
“Thinking the same,” he replied, a smirk spreading on his face as he still maintained eye contact with Lauressa. A low growl came from her throat, though it was not a threat and only jovial. “And you Freidie-boo?” He said, turning his attention to Freida. She looked up, jutting out her bottom jaw and rolling her eyes at him.
“If we weren’t mates, I would beat you for calling me that.” She cringed. They had only been mates for a month, though they had known one another for several years now. The day of her 20th birthday ended their friendship and started their courtship instead. Felix stuck his tongue out, although his eyes still smiled at her. “Definitely focused on the apothecary and knowledge sections, this pack needs more healers.” She said affirmatively, finishing off the last of her bowl.
“Aww, so selfless” Felix cooed, earning him another glare from Freida.
The trio finished their lunch and made their way over to the stalls, joining some of the other unranked wolves. Over the next thirty minutes, they were joined by several others, resulting in a total of 32 wolves. As the moments ticked by, they watched as the Alpha family took their seats by the judges’ quarters. Once they were seated, Ms Carrol joined her wolves. She smiled flatly at them before announcing:
“It’s time.”
