Chapter Three: I'm Sorry?

2087 Words
It was so simple. Kainian had made sure to implant the story in the heads of everyone that had been at the bar. Daniel, a Swedish and Danish professor at the nearby academy had arrived at the bar a short while after his last lecture for the day had finished. After a handful of drinks, he'd said a short goodbye to the bartender and left the bar. Alone. The bartender would recall how Daniel had seemed so depressed. But how could he have possibly known that Daniel was going to jump in front of a train? 'Ah, at a last we are here. Isn't it funny, he always says that knowledge and understanding can one day suddenly hit you and everything will make sense. HAHAHA! Oh, the irony! This is the basically the epiphany of his statement! The train is a metaphor for knowledge, and he is literally going to be hit by knowledge, HAHAHA! Like boom, KNOWLEDGE! HAHAHA!' Kainian was laughing hysterically, finding this funnier than the previous kills. "You really have an elementary sense of humor" Alex thought. Daniel's head hurt like he'd hit it against a brick wall for hours. Where the hell was he? He opened his eyes only to realize that he was being carried. What the f**k? Daniel's vision was too blurry to make out the face of the person carrying him, all he could tell was that it was a female. The last thing he remembered was going to Yaka bar, but after that...nothing. 'The pray is making strange noises, little one. Think he has begun squirming already? HAHAHA, he doesn't even know what we're going to do to him!' Alex looked down to see Daniel staring at her. "Crap. Oh well, it's more fun if he's awake for the last part I guess" Alex thought and could've sworn a shiver was sent down her spine. What was she saying? She was about to kill one of her college professors and she was...thrilled about it? Granted, Daniel was a bastard, but his blood would be on her hands, her conscience. Why did she not find that thought horrifying? Alex's phone was buzzing. Probably just Max wanting to know what she was up to. He had been checking up on her a lot since professor Daniel's outburst. He seemed to be the only one who cared how she was feeling these days. Ash always went off the radar when he was studying and Hailey...Alex sighed deeply and stopped. She was here. The railway station, also known as the only way in and out of the city without a car. She checked the timetable and smirked slightly. 'Did I not tell you that we would have exactly 8 minutes to finish? HAHAHA and you didn't believe me, dumb little one!'. Alex shook her head in disbelief. How had Kainian had calculated the exact time it would take her to walk from Taka bar to the railway station? Professor Daniel grunted. Alex grinned and jumped down on the tracks. With a swift motion she flung professor Daniel off her shoulder. He made a pained noise as his back smacked against the rails. He grimaced and opened his eyes. He focused his gaze on her. "Mi-miss Foximore?" he said, confused. Alex checked the time. 5 minutes left. She smiled innocently at him. "How can we be sure that he doesn't move?" Alex asked Kainian. 'HAHAHAHA! Are you truly that dumb little one? The answer is simple: we break his legs, begs, begs, begs, break them, break his legs, legs, make him scream, make him beg, beg for you to stop breaking his legs HAHAHAHA!!' Professor Daniel was staring at her, horrified when he finally realized where he was. Alex grabbed one of his legs and began twisting it. He tried to scream but no sound came out. The railway station was empty, how Kainian had known it was going to be completely empty was beyond her. She twisted and with a little help from Kainian's strength, the leg snapped. Professor Daniel's eyes widened as tears fell down his face but still no sound escaped his mouth. Alex frowned. "What did you do to him? It's no fun if he's gonna stay quiet when I break the other one as well" Alex said. Professor Daniel's eyes widened more, and he began shaking his head violently. Kainian laughed hysterically, 'As much as I do enjoy hearing screams of agony, this one's got quite the annoying voice. Wouldn't you much rather watch him struggle to scream rather than hear the irritable sound, little one?' Kainian said. Alex shrugged. "Fine, if you say so" she said and bent down again, grabbing the other leg. When it snapped she checked the clock, glancing slightly at professor Daniel, now pulling his hair out with his mouth wide open, still soundless. Only one minute left. Alex waved ironically at professor Daniel, just like she had always done at the end of his lectures. She climbed up from the tracks and sat down on the closest bench. The sound of the train closing in ringed in the air. Daniel was trying to crawl away, his broken legs making it impossible. Alex grinned at him. "You know where people like you end up professor" she said. Kainian's laughter filled her head as the train ran over professor Daniel. All that remained was a mutilated, headless body. The Roxavite was not as bad as it used to be. The pain was horrible, but the thought of professor Daniel being gone made it feel like it was worth it. The clock had barely hit 1 am when it was over. Alex was panting on the floor, wiping the beads of sweat on her forehead. 'Told you it would be fun, HAHAHA. Oh you have come a long way, little one, a few hundred more and we'll be halfway through with selling your soul, whole, hole, stole, role, goal, almost reached our goal, blood, blood, despair, ah, the yelling and the pain, such a shame, I wanted you to be in more pain, feign it, that's it fake it! break it! broken legs, broken stones, broken bodies, broken souls, goals! reaching our goals HAHAHAHA, AHHH, I'm sorry, he's okay, no he's dead, bed, shed, snakeskin, HAHAHAHAHAAH'. Kainian had grasped control of their body and was grabbing his head, pulling at their hair. "STOP IT" Alex thought. Kainian was able to move their arms and was taking a chokehold on them. "Kainian stop it! You're gonna kill us!" Alex thought, her head getting dizzy from the lack of oxygen. Kainian let go and slapped them. 'Deal not finished, bad Kainian, bad Kainian AAAHHHH'- "Would you calm the f**k down already!!" Alex shouted out loud. Kainian giggled psychotically. 'I am calm, little one. What are you talking about?'. Alex gasped as the grip around her throat loosened. What in God's name just happened? She reached her hand up to her eyes and noticed them being wet. It took her a moment to realize that she hadn't been the one crying. The auditorium was dead silent for once. It had been silent even before the principal had entered. Everyone had heard of the suicide. There would be a minute of silence held to honor Daniel Rusdal later that day. Alex could sense the heavy atmosphere all around her. It was like a cloak, slowly choking her. She wanted nothing else but to get out of there. Kainian's presence had faded ever since it's strange outburst. Kainian often had outbursts of madness, Alex was used to them by now. However, what she wasn't used to was Kainian hurting her, or more precisely, them. It relished in her pain, but it always helped her recover faster. It kept her up and ready to kill at all times, always healing her body after the Roxavite. An injured killing machine was useless it usually said. So why the f**k had Kainian tried to kill them? It didn't make sense. Alex reached within her and found Kainian murmuring to itself. 'Broke his legs, I'm sorry, worth it, deserved it, public service, pain, gain, pain, gain, insane, in vain, useless, so much blood, blood, splishing and splashing in blood, please do it again, broke his legs, I'm sorry, worth it, deserved it, public service, pain, gain, pain, gain, insane, am I insane? No, yes, maybe, no, what no, yes, yes, HAHAHAHAHA yes, no, gaah'. Kainian had been going on and on, repeating the same thing over and over again all day. There was an emotion emitting out of Kainian, mixing with her mind and what was left of her soul. Alex hadn't noticed it until now and suddenly one of the phrases Kainian was repeating stood out. 'I'm sorry, worth it' - "What are you apologizing for?" she thought to it. Kainian stopped murmuring. 'Apologizing? Oh dear, sweet little one, HAHAHAHA and here I thought I was the mad one' Kainian said. Alex frowned, her confusion must have been obvious because Kainian laughed again. 'I have nothing to be sorry for, little one, so why would I be apologizing? You have begun hearing things, just like I do HAHAHAHA, isn't it fun? Seeing and hearing what others can't? What isn't there?' Kainian said and giggled menacingly. Alex could have sworn that Kainian had spoken. The atmosphere in around her had lightened, the cloak was gone. It suddenly hit her. The emotion, the heavy feeling...Alex froze, her shock gripping her, keeping her in place, like an iron fist. Never in the almost two years that she had been sharing a body with Kainian had she felt that emotion. Not once. The reason why was because all this time, Kainian had made sure she couldn't feel it. It had called it a weakness they couldn't afford to have. Remorse. Kainian had felt remorseful. The afternoon Swedish lecture was canceled since there hadn't been enough time to find a substitute. Honestly...not the worst news you could hear on a Friday. Alex was on her way home when Hailey caught up to her. She lightly smacked the back of Alex's head as a greeting and walked beside her, not saying a word. She was waiting for Alex to say something first. She could always tell when something was up with Alex but she never pried. She kept quiet and let Alex decide if she wanted to explain what was bothering her or not. If Alex wanted to talk, Hailey would always listen and if Alex didn't want to talk, Hailey wouldn't push her. Alex could barely register Hailey's presence right now. Kainian had, for the first time since they got linked together, felt remorse. One of the emotions it was preventing her from feeling. No matter how she looked at it, no matter what perspective she tried to look through, she couldn't figure out why. She shook her head violently, trying to avoid getting stuck in her own thought patterns even more. Her mind would undoubtedly spiral deeper into analyzing this strange discovery and then continue to over analyze it, leaving her with a headache no Advil could save her from. So Alex looked at Hailey instead. Hailey smiled at her, still waiting for her to give an indication. "Where are Max and Ash?" Alex asked. Hailey smacked her lips. "They're busy" she replied and smiled innocently. Alex raised her eyebrow. "Meaning what?" she asked. She couldn't stop her snort-laugh when Hailey grinned in response. "Hails, what did you make them do this time?" Alex said, now curious. Hailey shrugged. "Let's just say that the cheerleading squad just got itself two new members" she said. Alex didn't even try to stop the laughter this time. "You signed them up for the cheerleading squad!? Those people are insane, forcing every member to attend every practice" Alex said between her laughing fits. Hailey hummed and nodded. Alex suddenly stopped and gasped, gripping her hand, making Hailey look at her. "Omg they're at cheerleading practice right now, aren't they!?" Alex exclaimed. Hailey grinned and nodded again. Their laughter for their friends' dismay rumbled around the streets they passed. They reached Alex's house first as always and said their goodbyes. Hailey got home a few minutes later and splayed herself on her bed. It had been a long time since they'd held hands all the way home. Her heart was beating rapidly and she couldn't stop the goofy smile from spreading across her face. Alex had looked really good today Hailey thought to herself.
