CHAPTER TEN
Jessica’s POV
I stared at the message again, my fingers trembling around my phone.
You should have listened to the warning.
“Justice, what warning?” I asked.
He didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he took another screenshot of the message and sent it to himself.
“Don't delete anything,” he said. “We may need it later.”
“Later?” I repeated. “Justice, someone just drugged our drinks and sent us a threatening message. I don't think we should be talking about later.”
“I know.”
He looked at me, and for the first time that evening, I saw genuine fear in his eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear for me.
“I'm taking you home.”
I nodded.
“But what about Clara and Larry?”
“We'll deal with them after you're safe.”
He helped me stand.
My legs felt weak, and I had to hold onto his arm for support.
“Easy.”
“I'm fine.”
“You're obviously not fine.”
“Okay,” I muttered. “Maybe I'm a little less than fine.”
Despite the situation, he smiled briefly.
“That sounds more like you.”
We slowly made our way toward the exit.
Before we reached the door, however, I heard voices coming from the hallway.
I grabbed Justice's arm.
“Wait.”
He stopped.
Someone was approaching.
Footsteps.
Two people.
They stopped directly outside the room.
I looked at Justice.
He raised one finger to his lips, telling me to stay quiet.
Then we heard a familiar voice.
“Are you sure they're in there?”
My eyes widened.
Clara.
Then Larry answered.
“I saw Justice take her inside. They're definitely there.”
My heart dropped.
Justice's expression hardened.
“They're looking for us,” I whispered.
He nodded.
The door handle suddenly moved.
Someone tried to open it.
Locked.
“Why is this door locked?” Clara asked.
“Maybe they're inside,” Larry replied.
I looked at Justice.
He leaned toward me and whispered, “Don't say a word.”
The handle moved again.
Then there was silence.
A few seconds later, their footsteps slowly disappeared down the hallway.
I released the breath I'd been holding.
“Did they leave?”
Justice carefully opened the door and looked outside.
The hallway was empty.
“They're gone.”
“Justice…”
“Yeah?”
“They knew we were here.”
“I know.”
“So what are we going to do?”
He looked down the hallway.
“We're going to stop playing defense.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“It means we're going to find out exactly what they're planning.”
Justice’s POV
I was furious.
Someone had tampered with our drinks.
Someone had sent Jessica a threatening message.
And now Clara and Larry were searching for us.
This was no longer some childish competition.
I took out my phone and called my driver.
“Where are you?”
“I'm outside the school grounds, sir.”
“Good. Bring the car around to the back entrance.”
“Yes, sir.”
I ended the call.
Jessica looked at me.
“Why the back entrance?”
“Because I'm not taking any chances.”
She nodded.
We started walking toward the back corridor.
Suddenly, Jessica stopped.
“Justice.”
“What?”
She pointed toward the floor.
There was a small black object lying near the wall.
I picked it up.
It was a tiny recording device.
My stomach tightened.
“They've been listening to us.”
Jessica's eyes widened.
“They planted this in the room?”
“Looks like it.”
She stepped back.
“Then they heard everything.”
“Probably.”
“Even our plans?”
I looked at her.
“Maybe.”
For several seconds, we stood there in silence.
Then I smiled.
Jessica stared at me.
“Why are you smiling?”
“Because they just made a mistake.”
“What mistake?”
I held up the recording device.
“They think they're the only ones who can play dirty.”
Jessica's eyes narrowed.
“What are you thinking?”
“I think it's time we turn their own game against them.”
She smiled.
“Now you're talking.”
We continued toward the back entrance.
But neither of us noticed the figure standing at the end of the hallway.
Watching us.
Waiting.
And holding a phone with a recording of our conversation.
