CHAPTER ELEVEN
Jessica’s POV — Continued
We were almost at the back entrance when Justice suddenly stopped.
“What is it?” I whispered.
He looked behind us.
“Nothing.”
“Justice, don't do that. You're scaring me.”
“I just want to make sure nobody followed us.”
He looked around once more before opening the door.
Cool night air rushed against my face.
I breathed in deeply.
After everything that had happened, stepping outside felt like finally escaping a nightmare.
A black car was waiting nearby.
“My driver's here,” Justice said.
We walked toward it, but before I could get inside, my phone vibrated again.
I froze.
Another message.
I opened it.
You think you're clever?
My heart sank.
A second message appeared immediately.
The game has only just begun.
“Justice…”
He took the phone from my hand.
His face hardened as he read the messages.
“This person is watching us.”
“Who could it be?”
“I don't know.”
“Could it be Clara?”
“Possibly.”
“Or Larry?”
“Possibly.”
“Then why don't we just confront them?”
“Because we don't know what else they've planned.”
He opened the car door.
“Get inside.”
I obeyed.
Justice sat beside me and instructed the driver to take us home.
As the car pulled away from the school, I looked through the window.
The lights from the party slowly disappeared behind us.
I thought about everything that had happened.
The drink.
The strange symptoms.
The locked room.
The recording device.
The messages.
Something about all of it didn't make sense.
“Justice?”
“Hmm?”
“There's something we're missing.”
He turned toward me.
“What?”
“I don't think Clara and Larry are working alone.”
He became silent.
“Why would you say that?”
“Because they wouldn't be able to plan all this so quickly without someone helping them.”
Justice leaned back against the seat.
“That is exactly what I've been thinking.”
I stared at him.
“So what do we do?”
“We investigate.”
“Tonight?”
“Tonight.”
I smiled nervously.
“You really don't know how to rest, do you?”
“Not when someone is trying to hurt you.”
My heart skipped.
I quickly looked away.
“Justice…”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
He looked at me.
“For what?”
“For staying with me.”
His expression softened.
“Always.”
For a moment, neither of us said anything.
Then my phone vibrated again.
We both looked at it.
Another message.
This time, there were only three words:
CHECK YOUR BAG.
My eyes widened.
“My bag?”
I quickly grabbed it from beside me and opened it.
Everything looked normal.
My books.
My makeup bag.
My phone charger.
Then I noticed something underneath my notebook.
A small folded piece of paper.
I slowly pulled it out.
Justice leaned closer.
“Don't open it yet.”
“Why?”
“Because we don't know what's inside.”
I looked at him.
Then at the mysterious paper.
Finally, I unfolded it.
There was only one sentence written inside.
I KNOW WHAT YOU TWO ARE PLANNING.
My hands went cold.
Justice took the paper from me.
His eyes scanned the words.
Then he looked at me.
“Jessica…”
“What?”
“This isn't Clara.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Clara doesn't know everything we've planned.”
I stared at him.
“So who does?”
Justice looked out of the car window.
“I think that's exactly what we're about to find out.”
The car continued down the dark road.
Neither of us noticed the black car that had been following us from a distance.
And inside that car, someone was watching us.
Someone who already knew our next move.
The game had officially begun.
