She reached the edge of a wood and thought that she would get some shelter at last, but she was wrong. The wind pulled twigs and branches off the trees and threw them at her. They were small at first, but it was hard to keep moving while trying to look up and keep an eye on objects falling from all directions. Her courage was starting to falter, but she wouldn’t turn around. For all she knew, she could be minutes away from rescue, and she didn’t want to face going all the way back to the house in this weather. Then she heard a loud crash, looked ahead and saw a tree fall right in front of her eyes. It was some distance away, but it fell right across the road, branches splaying everywhere and the old roots sticking up to the right of the road. “This is madness,” Claire muttered to herself
