Klar closed his eyes and nodded. It seemed Subservient to me, but I didn't know how alien gestured worked. ''My apology , but we should not pursue this."
Melk's voice was quiet and didn't seem to match the mountain of a man behind it. ''The emperor sent us here. Shall I report your displeasure with his decree?"
A quick shaking of his head to indicate 'no' was the answer.
"Then we are done,'' said Melk. "Give him language implant. From there we can move on." He turned to Trevah and spoke in English. ''Stay with James my Dara. i have duties to attend to.'' He breathed in deep." I cannot stay.''
Trevah's eyes narrowed ,and he slid off the table. Arms that belonged on a farm baseball wrapped around a man that could be from Ancient Rome.
Appropriate since Trevah leaned up and sealed his lips over Melk.
For a few seconds and several quick heartbeats, I watched. Guess that's universal. It was adorable but reassuring somehow. My books were filled with strange creatures that were well....alien. It was nice to see we had some commonality.
Melk's tongue licked his bottom lip slow. "Later." With that he turned to carry out whatever bodybuilder men on spaceships do.
Trevah turned and gestured to the examination table. "Never thought that I'd see earther this soon. I've studied your planet and people." He smiled broad. "Cultural observation. Mostly what you would called television ."His thumbs went up. "Cool,EH? Like Fonz?"
My lips pressed together to keep from laughing."uh ,yeah." Although the 'cool' gesture was endearing on him.
His eyes widened," Have you seen him ?'
"Who?"
Again he did the thumb gesture .
"Oh, him. Uh, no. I haven't been to Hollywood."
"I can't wait till I go." He smiled wide and a dimple appeared on his cheek. "I can finally meet all the people I studied. Landings aren't permitted yet. So much I want to try when we greet."
"Meet," I said. My heart thumped. "So you ,Uh guys are going through with this?''
He nodded. "your planet's anomaly. Not warlike enough or advanced enough to pose a threat. You fight each other. Perhaps if you looked outward to the stars, we would have conquered you as a precaution."
My voice cracked." Well that's good that didn't happen."
"QUITE. You are not peaceful enough to approach... under normal circumstances. Cultural Contact would have left your planet ALONE. Either you would have destroyed yourselves or ascended to the next level .."
"But there's something about us?"
He smiled wide, and a dimple reappeared. "Cute, and smart. I knew there's a reason I like you people. From what we could piece together, a previous Volardi empire searched the galaxy for life. They found little. So, they did what you would call seeding. Genetic modifications here, infusion of Volardi DNA when possible. Most mutated into viable life. Unfortunately ,evolution took them down paths far away from the Base model." He smiled. " We welcomed them when appropriate , but you mutated the least."
"We are like you?"
"Oh no. Your species is only female and male. The females are the closest thing to our femeni ... omegas if you prefer. Although the birthing can is in the wrong place. Their heat's different too - not as strong. As for the ones that look like Omegas, well you don't have a womb and don't get slick back there." His grin widened. "Hopefully we can correct that very soon.''
He turned to Klar. ''I think the little one is ready."
