1. New School
Ellen POV
"Ellen, Jessica! Hurry up!"
I heard my Dad's voice from outside the house. I stood in front of the mirror, looking at my appearance. I had just moved from New York to Colorado, Denver.
"You won't get prettier just because you stare longer in the mirror!"
Jessica Scotland stood in front of my bedroom door, pouting. She is my step-sister. My Dad remarried a year ago. My mom died of cancer ten years ago when I was six. I have nothing against my father remarrying. He deserves to be happy.
"Come on." I wanted to avoid responding to Jesicca. She'll call me names if I do. She's so annoying. She's always like that. But before my Dad, she pretends to be nice to me.
"Stop!" Jessica's hand prevented me from going out.
"Dad's waiting for us." Today was our first day of school. Me and Jesicca. We have to be in the same school.
"Listen to what I say first!" Jessica looked at me with her sharp eyes. "At the new school. Don't tell me that you and I are half-siblings. You have to pretend you don't recognize me."
Jessica looked at me horribly, like she was looking at something disgusting.
"Why?" I asked.
"Hey, use your brain!" Jessica snapped her fingers at my forehead. "You're ugly and disgusting. Who would recognize you as a sister?"
I just kept quiet. Yes, whenever Jessica bullied me, I was always silent. I had no strength to fight back because Jessica was helped by her mother, my stepmother, Wilma Stand. Wilma was even more horrible. She didn't hesitate to slap and hurt me if I didn't obey her.
"Okay," I replied.
Jessica rubbed my head with a haughty smile. I wouldn't say I liked the way she smiled. I hated when she told me not to do things. But I hated myself more because I couldn't fight her.
Jessica ran out of the room, down the stairs. I followed behind her. Down there, Wilma was waiting for us. Oh, no, no. Just waiting for Jessica. I wasn't meant for her.
"Bye, Mom!" Jessica hugged her mom before leaving.
"What's wrong with your clothes? Why are you showing your cleavage at school?" Wilma warned Jessica.
Jessica does have an attractive appearance. She was also pretty and good at wearing makeup. Her style is trendy. Unlike me, who only wears jeans and long-sleeved shirts or T-shirts.
"Mom, don't be dumb. This is the United States. Outfits like this are very trendy." Jessica is very good at making excuses. "Do you want me to look bad like her?"
Jessica pointed at me. I didn't want to interfere and chose to leave the house immediately. I quickly approached my father, who had started the car engine. I promptly sat in the front seat.
"Morning, Dad." I greeted him while kissing his cheek.
"What's up, my Bunny. Are you ready for your new friends?" My Dad was so excited. He was the only thing keeping me alive. I love him so much.
"Not really," I said. I took my book out of my bag and started reading it.
****
Denver High School.
I stood in front of a room. I waited for five minutes. Jessica entered the classroom first. After getting out of the car, she told me not to come at the same time. I waited for her to go in first. I was actually already late. The class had already started. It's my first day, and I'm late.
I knocked on the door before entering the classroom. When I walked in, everyone looked at me. I smile briefly. They just stare at me for a moment, then ignore me. I saw that Jessica was already talking to some guys in class.
"Ellen Walker?" The teacher in the classroom called out to me. "You're late for the first day."
"I-I am sorry, Sir. I have to go to the bathroom for a moment."
People chuckled at my answer. I felt uncomfortable with this situation. I wanted to sit down quickly.
"I gave you a chance this time because it was your first day. I won't tolerate it next time. I don't like students who aren't on time." Professor Grey, the literature teacher, warned me.
"Thank you." I immediately looked for a seat. There were only vacancies for the very back bench. But that was good. I could be away from Jessica. She always asked me to do her work if I was around her.
I sat in the back seat and took out my books. No one greeted me except one person.
"Hi." That person was a curly-haired girl. She was cute and wore huge glasses. She sat on the bench in front of me. "I am Poland."
"Ellen," I replied a little nervously.
"You are lovely." Poland complimented me. She really flattered me. Apart from my Dad, no one else did. But why does it feel so strange?
I didn't dare give any response. I was afraid she was just joking or pranking me. I didn't know anything about my new school. So I chose to stay quiet.
"Where are you from?" Poland asked again.
"Oh, New York." I wanted this question and answer to end. I just want to be quiet right now.
The classroom door suddenly opened from outside without any knocking sound. A man wearing a black leather jacket and torn pants entered carrying a helmet with a skull on it.
"Good morning, Professor Grey!" The man walked in without hesitation. He also smiled broadly at Professor Grey. I realized this when Professor Grey warned me not to be late for his class.
"Axl!" Professor Grey's voice sounded squealing.
Axl, the name of the man with the appearance of a motorcycle gang, turned his head when his name was called.
"What?" Axl's gaze shot towards Professor Grey.
Oh my God! I can't believe this. Axl stared at Professor Grey as if to challenge him. Who is that man? Why is he being so disrespectful?
"Don't worry about Axl. He's the owner of this school's son. No one dares to bully him." Suddenly Poland told me.
And sure enough. Professor Grey didn't do anything. He let Axl into his class without any drama. All eyes were on Axl, especially the girls. I can admit his face is handsome, even with his more thug-like appearance.
I was even more surprised when Axl chose to sit next to me. My blood froze instantly. This man was arrogant and rude. How could he sit next to me? I was glad to be away from Jessica. But it looks like I'm about to have a new disaster.
Axl noticed my presence. The presence of a strange girl in this class. His gaze at me seemed to accuse me of doing something terrible. Her mouth seemed to be chewing gum. Damn! He's so handsome. What should I do? I couldn't do anything. My whole body felt immobilized. The evil boy aura in him intimidated me.
"Who are you?" Axl asked, staring at me. "I've never seen you. Who let you sit here?"
