Dinner with the Reeds

1023 Words
Augustine’s POV I barely reached home in time for dinner and if not for that fact that mother had intervened, August was ready to murder me. By the time, I had a quick shower and came to join them at the table, August was past her murderous tantrum. “How was your trip dear?” Mother asked me as she placed piece of chicken in her mouth. “It was just the same mother, nothing to talk about really” I said with a smile, the moment I said those words, my mind drifted back to the beautiful red head but I quickly pushed her out of my mind. “By the same, you mean boring” August said and took a sip from her glass of white wine. “Exactly.” I replied. She scoffed said “you make everything boring, you somehow manage to take the fun out of everything” I chuckled and said “While you just make everything glittery and fun” “Uh huh” she said and threw me an overly sweet smile. “That’s funny, I think Charles will have a very different opinions about that” I said with a cool smile while I slowly raised my glass to my lips. I watched as her pretty face twisted into a school. “Do not speak of that bastard to me or you might just end up ruining my appetite” August said angrily. “Oh for heaven’s sake August, can you not curse so much?” mother said with a roll of her eyes. “But mother, he started it, he knows how much I despise Charles but he keeps bringing him up” August said as she shot me a death glare to which I simply smiled. “That is enough both of you, you two fight like kids, can you behave like the adults that you are for heaven’s sake” Mum said. August decided to remain quiet and have the rest of her dinner in silence. August, my twin sister was really a sweet thing, she was the more energetic one between the two of us, where she was vibrant and spontaneous, I was cool and reserved and we were polar opposite in terms of resemblance, I looked more like my father while August looked more like my mother, she was tall and curvy with blonde hair just like my mother while I had dark hair with rigid and sharp features of my father. August had always been friendly and outgoing since we were kids, she had many friends and was the most popular girl in school, everyone loved her and she loved everyone except Charles. I had never known the reason for her hatred towards him, it started five years ago, before then, they had been on okay terms, then all of the sudden, things changed, August suddenly wanted nothing to do with Charles, just a sight of him irritated her greatly, I had tried to find out what the reason was but she was not ready to speak of it and when I asked Charles what happened between them, he had simply told me that it was best if we did not speak of it and let August do as she pleased. I was never one to pry into matters that did not concern me, so I simply let them be. Honestly, I found the whole thing entertaining in a way. It was nice to see August go completely crazy whenever I mentioned Charles, there was never anything I could use to ruffle her feathers but with Charles, I could even set her feathers ablaze. What sort of brother will be if I could not drive my sister complementary crazy? And as for Charles, he had this reckless attitude towards everything and everything but when it came to August, he seemed more serious, he almost seemed like a different person and it was interesting to see something like that. As for their secret issue, nothing stayed secret forever and in the end, I will surely find out what it was about, for now, I will simply enjoyed it while it lasted. “Linda called me today” mother said to me and this time, it was my turn to feel slightly loss of appetite. I forced the bite I had in my mouth down my throat and said “that is nice, what did she say?” Mother smiled brightly and said “she said she will be returning to New York very soon and also to tell you that she missed you and she was looking forward to seeing you once more “ I could not help rolling my eyes, if she wanted to inform me that she missed me, she could have called me and not mother “I am sure Augustine must be thrilled she is returning, I can’t wait to plan their first date when she returns” August said with a sweet smile but I knew better. She knew how much I disliked spending time with Linda and she was simply saying this to spite me because of what I said about Charles. “That will not be necessary August, we can plan our own date” I said The only reply I got to this was a sweet smile that made liar eyes shine with evil intent. “But there is no need for you to take time out of your busy schedule to plan a date when you have a sister who can do that for you, don’t fret brother, this is done out of my love for you” she said sweetly. Mother clapped her hands happily and said “then it’s settled, August will be in charge of planning all your dates with Linda” I threw a nasty glare at August and said “Splendid, just splendid indeed” The little witch had the gall to smile and bat her eyelashes at me. “Smile sister dearest, revenge it’s always a dish best served cold” I said to myself as I took a sip from glass of wine.
