An Established Routine

Year Twelve

I am an omega, meant to follow orders

All others who are deemed higher, a servant I will be

For my job is to my suitor, no others will I bow

“Goodnight ladies! And remember, tomorrow we will have our little ones come in, so be sure to greet them and welcome them into our family with open arms!” The voice cut out as the static ended, the lights everywhere dimming as we were expected to sleep.

“Ooh! I’m so nervous, I can’t hardly wait to meet our new little sisters tomorrow.” Ally whispered, turning to me as she finished putting a braid in her hair.

“I know… it just seems like yesterday that I was meeting Mary and being shown the school too. Those little girls must be as nervous as we were.” I nodded, pulling my blanket up closer to my chin. Has it already been twelve years? It seemed like the time around me had just flown by, leaving us in our own little bubble of nothing but school.

It hardly felt like twelve years had passed, but here tomorrow I will be seventeen and in my final year.

“Did you remember to press your new sash and shine your diamond?” Ally should have known the answer to that, me being the purest every year except one, she beating me by a hairbreadth; and it was only because I hadn’t started my period like the rest of them had. When it did finally happen, they had their usual ‘Blooming Party’ for me just like the rest of them.

“Of course. We cannot have any wrinkles after all.” We did our own laundry, and a wrinkle on the uniform was a blemish on our record we could not afford. “Did you remember?”

“Oh, f**k!” Ally jumped out of the bed, going to where she tossed off her sash over the back of a chair after putting on her nighttime one and cussing still.

“Language.” I muttered as I watched her, trying not to laugh.

“Don’t police me in here, Pearl. I need some time to get all the cussing out at night, or Judy just might drive me to be ‘unlady like’ for once.”

I had to agree with her on that point, wincing slightly. Ever since second year when they revealed how points were calculated to measure our purity, Judy had forgotten the times we had snuck her food or even helped her practice more and opted to ruin the ones around d her to look better herself; a tactic that worked most of the time unfortunately, leaving Ally and I to avoid her and her lackeys at all cost. “Surely she wouldn’t pull anything tomorrow… Right?”

Ally scoffed at that question, her eyes rolling slightly as she finished ironing her sash. “Knowing her: yah, yah she will.” Ally nodded as she put away the iron and carefully laid her sash over the chest at the end of her bed, smiling before nodding and climbing back under the covers herself.

We had moved rooms basically every year since being here at school, this last year and our following g expected to be nicer though. We were split down into two to a room instead of three, meaning we had more space and more time together. It was nice, especially since it seemed like third place was a constant revolving door when it came to roommates.

“This year we start the special class, right?” Ally whispered, making me nod my head as I turned to look at her.

“God, yes… I wonder what they entail?!”

“I heard that it’s about s*x and pleasing your suitor.” Ally whispered conspiratorially. “At least, that’s what Destiny said.”

“How do you even teach s*x?” We had been taught to save ourselves at all cost for our suitors, so the idea of doing any of that without them seemed preposterous. Plus, adding another class onto our already full routine seemed almost impossible.

“I don’t know, but I’m awful curious to find out.” Ally Grinned at me, turning her back to get more comfortable. “I’ll see you in the morning, good night sis.”

“Goodnight, Ally.” I whispered, her little snores making me laugh as I too got comfortable to sleep. Tomorrow seemed like it was going to be something wonderful.
