A Breakfast Full Of Sinners

Ding, Ding, Ding! The morning bell greater me, making me open my eyes instantly and head to the restroom, Ally close behind. “Can you help me undo my braids?” Ally asked at her sink, tugging at the strands one by one. “I don’t know why you do this every night; your hair is beautiful when it’s brushed and it’s natural straight.” She had been doing it for the last two years like clockwork, making her hair more wavy and curly. “I figured out why I could never score higher points in beauty class. They’d been counting whether or not my hair was perfectly brushed and straight when it was down. They tend to be more lenient with curls.” It made sense, especially with my soft waves only needing a little help with some brush in mousse to stay perfect all day. I helped her finish and then started on my own completion, using the slight bit of gloss we had along with pinching my cheeks hard to promote a natural blush to them. “Do you think they’ll ever catch the Unpurist?” I whispered as I pulled on my underwear, thinking about the doctor’s exam we had yesterday. Ever since we had come here when we were little, one of the staff had been taking the purity of the ladies. The odd thing was, none of them wanted to point out who had done it, saying that it was only extra studying or that they were promised their suitor wanted them to do it, or even the newest thing of them revealing they were the suitor all along. It was nerve wrecking to say the least, meaning that someone on the staff was ruining us and our reputations. “I still think it’s Mister Gross, the old man gives me the creeps.” She shivered, pulling on her dress and making sure it was straight and even. Before cinching her waist though, she put on her sash and then undid her nighttime one, completing our morning ritual. “My bet is on Peterson.” Our Physical Education Instructor had always given me the creeps since day one, the lingering gazes he would give or the almost inappropriate touches always bordered on indecent. I had brought it up with Miss Dayglow once, but he defended himself saying that he was only correcting mistakes that the ladies were making. “There, all done!” I smiled, double checking my teeth before going to the door. “God, I hope Judy doesn’t pull one of her tricks again… especially today.” “Do you want to open the door from behind it, just in case?” Ally looked at our door handle, eyeing it suspiciously. “Better be safe than sorry.” I nodded, both of us heading behind it as I pulled on the handle, swinging the door inward into the room and then right in front of us. Splech! Something wet landed on the other side, making both of us groan and roll our eyes. “Yep… she did.” Ally groaned. From the sounds in the hall though, we weren’t the only ones to be a victim of this prank. Calls of horror and disgust were ringing out, someone screaming that they were ruined. We both peaked around the door to see a pile of paint and what looked like a mixture of toilet paper. “How many months of filching supplies do you think she spent saving up for this?” I wondered, seeing the disaster unfold in the hall as we carefully sidestepped the mess. “For this? Psh… probably five or six. Think of all the almost empty paint tubes she would have to put in her bra.” We both rolled our eyes and scurried down the hall, leaving those who were ruined behind. We had learned at an early age we couldn’t help each other, at least not with getting in trouble ourselves. The only ones we had to rely on were ourselves; my exception being Ally and vise versa. We could only hope that since it happened to a lot of us this time, the action would have major consequences this time around; but we remained doubtful as we made our way to breakfast. When we entered the grand hall, we went to our newly assigned table and saw Judy and her gang already waiting and pristine. When they saw us though, they glared daggers at our unblemished uniforms. “Good morning.” Ally and I both chimed at them, talking our seats at the head of the table. The warning bell was then given, the rest of us filing in at the last second, covered in a rainbow of sludge and paint. I had to shake my head a little in disappointment in it all, but there was nothing they could really do. Having a blemish was not as bad as being late to something. If anything: their rank would be demoted today, if they were late they would have had way worse a punishment. “Good morning Ladies!” Miss Dayglow came out on the platform to greet us, her dress as impeccable as ever. “Good Morning Miss Dayglow.” We all chimed, making her give us her signature smile. “We have a big day ahead of us today! We will be greeting your new sisters and expect all of you to be on your best behavior.” She smiled as her gaze roved over the hall; pausing as it landed on our table. “Oh, oh my.” Her smile instantly turned to a frown, her eyes taking in the plethora of ruined dresses and tear stained ladies. “This will not do at all… It seems we have a gathering of sinners today.”
