“Today, we have the grand total for yesterday’s donations!” Miss Dayglow beamed, a soft clap going around the room. “It is slightly better than last year’s total; so ladies, I expect you to do better next year.”
“Yes Miss Dayglow.” The table near us chimed in, my older sister Mary sitting near the front of it.
“We are also in the works of having some changes around here.” Miss Dayglow walked down the steps from where she stood, coming over and standing near us. “Apparently, some parents do not know what is best for their omegas. So, we will be having a visitors day just for the new ladies today as well.”
A hushed chatter went about the room, Miss Dayglow’s eyes settling on me. She came over and rested a hand on my shoulder, smiling at me with deadly pointed teeth. “If some little ladies know what is best for keeping their family’s safe, they’ll say that staying is what they want.” She dug her fingers into my skin, making me bite my lip as her eyes flashed a deadly yellow.
“But on to other news!” She changed the pitch of her voice to something more pleasant, releasing my shoulder and walking around the hall as she spoke. “A few of our suitors called us back, slightly dissatisfied with what they discovered; So starting today, MONTHLY checks for all of our ladies. It will be mandatory, and all that fail will receive the red sash..” the room became deathly quiet then, a few faces of girls becoming quite pail.
“But that’s it for today! Enjoy your breakfast and we will start with Doctor checks going from eighteen, Five, seventeen, six, and so on and so forth.” She waves a hand, going back up to the platform. “I will see you all at supper, and remember!”
“A Good Omega follows orders.” We all said together, the words bouncing around the room.
Trays of food were wheeled out then, Maybel getting no food this time around. I noticed that Trixie, Ally, and I got a full egg over easy with oatmeal and a large glass of orange juice. We also had half an apple and a single slice of bacon. Looking at the other plates, I noticed that the portions became less and less with the deeper the sash color.
We were given ten minutes to eat, one of the girls spilling orange juice and being reprimanded right away, all food price lagers for the day stripped from her as her sash was then traded with Judie’s. We were all extra careful then, not wanting to lose what we were given. After breakfast, Misses Crow lead us down the halls again and to a sterile looking white room, a woman in a lab coat coming out to greet us. “Hello ladies, I’m Doctor Ogden and will be doing your exam today. The older ladies are just about done, so it will be one at a time for now. Lady Pearl, your first, alright?”She held out her hand to me, allowing me to grasp it and then taking down another hallway.
“Doctor Ogden… We have our first damaged good reported.. what do we do?” A nurse came up to us as we walked, wringing her gloved hands in trepidation.
“Report it to Miss Dayglow, a red sash and then mark it in her file. I’ll need to see if it’s something that happened naturally or there was an outside source. Ask her if she wants it repaired or not as well.” Doctor Ogden nodded, her face stern behind her glasses. “That’s two out of twenty four, she will not be pleased.”
“Understood Doctor.” The nurse nodded, heading back into a room to the side, a lady from within crying loudly as she closed the door.
“Never mind that, little lady. I’m sure you are pure, right?” She asked, squeezing my hand as she opened an exam room for me. She didn’t even keep me I. There for long, doing a routine exam like my old family doctor had done on me before too. She gave me a lollipop afterwards as well for behaving so well. “Next, Ally.” She called after she brought me back, my friend waving at me as she passed.
“Lady Pearl, come this way with me.” Misses Crow nodded, telling the other girls to wait for their turn and she’d be right back. “It seems that your old family wants to check on you, dear. Do do hope that Miss Dayglow made herself clear today at breakfast, right?”
“Yes, Misses Crow.” I nodded, my little mind picking up on their not too subtle hints. They had nothing to worry though. Mommy had said daddy might try to get me back and I was to tell him no. I didn’t want daddy to get hurt all because of me.
The twists and turns down different halls made my head dizzy, but I was sure I would remember every turn eventually. “Here we are. I’ll be back soon to get you, lady Pearl. Remember, you’re our family now.” She smiled down at me, Patting my head as she opened a door for me to go into.
“Pearl? Pearl!” My daddy stood up from a desk, relief on his face at seeing me.
“Daddy!” I cried. Running to his arms as he scooped me up in a large hug, twirling me around the small room,
“My little princess, daddy’s sorry. I’m so sorry that you came here.” He sobbed a little then, his breath hitching as I patted his back with my little hand.
“Don’t worry daddy, I’m alright; see?” I grabbed his face and held it with both hands, rubbing his nose with mine.
“That you are. Now, let’s see about getting you home.” He turned to a door behind him as I started to struggle in his arms, getting him to put me down.
“Daddy… I don’t want to go though.”
