Chapter 1
“Alpha Kelvin, please have mercy!” The old woman cried on her knees but it didn’t faze me in the slightest. I didn’t even care about the eyes I got from everyone in the Pack square. “My decision is final.” I quoted icily, glaring at the woman with so much contempt. Her miserable sight was enough to ruin this beautiful morning the moon goddess gave me. “Please. Take me instead. Take me!” She crawled to me, clutching to my leg firmly like I was her life source. My teeth gnashed and my palms clenched into a fist in a split second. “Get off me!” I growled, throwing her off immediately. She thudded to the ground, rolling amidst the sandy ground. The crowd gasped, some of them murmuring. “Alpha Kelvin…” She called in a weak tone but it only pushed my buttons more. “My decision is final!” I barked and silence instantly struck. “She is going to be imprisoned for three hundred years.” I declared, gazing at the little girl at the center of the square. Her wrists and ankles were cuffed with silver chains, her skin was drenched in blood mostly due to the beatings my guards my guards had given her. She was trembling as if she had seen a ghost and her long black hair had covered her face. Even though she couldn’t look up to any of us, we could hear her whimpers and it pleased me. This was the kind of pain deserving of a criminal. “Kelvin, please I want you to tamper justice with mercy. This girl is just sixteen. She doesn’t deserve to go through this kind of punishment.” Matthew, my beta, calmly stated as he came to my side. “She is old enough to understand Pack rules, Matthew. She stole!” I pointed to her. “She stole medicines for her ailing grandmother. They couldn’t afford it, you should try and understand their plight.” He begged while the old woman kept on with her miserable antic. “Understand what?!” I growled and he heaved a light sigh. “If they couldn’t afford it, they should have simply worked for money. Even if they couldn’t, they should have just done what poor people does…” I paused as I reviewed the old woman and her granddaughter in disdain. “Beg for money.” I blurted. “I accept it is my fault but please don’t punish my granddaughter. Let me pay for her sins.” She coughed but I hissed. “Alpha Kelvin…” She tried to crawl up to me again but I sneered as a warning. “Kelvin, what she stole wasn’t even something that big. They were just medicines!” Matthew interjected but I glared at him with the most deadly look my gaze could mutter. “If she could steal medicines, who knows what kind of crimes she would dare to commit in the future?!” “Kelv—“ “As the Alpha of Sunville Pack, My decision is final.” I cut him off abruptly. He exhaled deeply whilst wriggling his head. “Excuse me.” He muttered and walked away without giving my permission. No doubt he was pained but I cared less. My gaze reverted to the little girl and her grandmother. Their displeasing sight was already tiring enough. “Guards. Take her to the dungeon.” I ordered and they immediately yielded. Two of them lifted the girl up, taking her to her rightful place. Her grandmother cried as if the world was ending as she chased after them. I heaved a light sigh hoping the anger in me would fade but how could it when my Pack members where murmuring words that disgusted me to the core. Apparently, they were not in support of my decision just like my Beta. “What are you all waiting for? Don’t you have work to tend to?” I growled at them and they immediately began to disperse. I exhaled again and began walking to the Pack house. Thanks to these people, they ruined my mood. As soon as I entered my mansion, my eyes darted to Matthew and my mother seated in the living room. They stopped their discussion immediately when they saw me but I cared less, so I decided to walk up the stairs to my room. “And where do you think you’re going Kelvin?” Anger bloomed in my mother’s voice. I stopped before the staircase. “Mother if you’re looking to start an argument with me, now is not the time.” I replied before climbing the stairs. “That girl didn’t deserve that punishment.” She uttered and I paused midway. “She is young and her crime wasn’t even something that disastrous.” “A crime is a crime, mother. I’m not going to be partial. Our Pack has always outshined because we’ve always maintained justice and discipline and I’m not ready to compromise that all for a little girl and her miserable grandmother.” “I’m not asking you to be partial, I’m asking you to show compassion. If you continue to treat your Pack members in such a strict manner, you’re only going to regret it in the end.” “I am simply following the way of my father.” “And how did that end up for him?” She questioned and I felt a pang in my chest. My phone started ringing, ending the tense silence between us. I briskly slipped it out of my pocket, it was the best way to avoid this conversation with my mother. “Lia!” I blurted in surprise as I noted the caller ID on my phone. A smile birthed on my lips as I answered the call. “And who might this beautiful stranger be?” I teased while she chuckled on the phone. “These days you’re becoming more of a deadly flirt Kelvin, and I fear for the ladies in our Pack.” She replied but I knew her cheeks were probably burning with faint red blush. “None of them deserve me.” I toned in a sensual manner. “So who deserves you then?” She asked. “You.” “Best friends shouldn’t cross that line.” She replied and I hummed. “I’m beginning to reconsider.” I said and she laughed. “Oh Kelvin, stop it. I’m about to drive now but I want you to prepare.” I frowned. “Prepare for what?” “For my arrival. Your cutie pie is finally returning home.” “What?! Today?” I asked almost immediately. “Yup, I should arrive at the Pack in a few hours.” “My goodness!” I yelled with laughter minting alongside. “I can’t wait to see you!” “Me too. Anyways, I have to go now.” She mumbled before ending the call. My heart raced like sports cars, my body trembled slightly from the excitement coursing through me. I was finally going to see my best friend after so long. “Matthew, clear my schedule for the day and tell the workers to prepare a dinner party tonight!” I ordered in excitement. He frowned. “And who is this guest?” He asked. “Lia.” I mumbled. Both of them frowned. “Have you forgotten Lia Thompson?” Their eyes exclaimed for a brief moment before relapsing to normal. “So she’s finally returning to the Pack, I don’t see the need for you to host a party for her.” My mother rolled her eyes. “What’s with that tone? Lia is a family friend, you know.” I remarked. “And so? Should I be hopping around all because your best friend has finally decided to return home.” She headed to the couch back. “You make it sound like she ran away mother.” I said while I threaded down the stairs. “Isn’t that what she did?” She clapped back. “She went to Cambridge to bag a degree.” I defended sharply, she scoffed. “She spent several years in the human world all for a degree that would be no use in the Pack.” “It has always been her dream mother, why are you being this way?” “Because she’s not worth it. This party and all is a complete waste of time.” She stated. My frown deepened, trying to calm the anger soaring in me. “I don’t know why you’ve always hated Lia, mother. Whatever she has done to you, she doesn’t deserve this hatred you show her.” “She doesn’t deserve you. As the Alpha of the Pack, you should know that she is toxic to you.” “She’s my best friend!” “We both know that she means more than that to you.” She clapped back and I went mute. “Whatever romance the both of you are sparking between each other, I won’t endorse it. I would rather die than let her be the Luna of Sunville Pack.” My palms curled into a fist and my breaths came out like a storm. “Lia Thompson is the only woman I choose to be mated with. Only she deserves to be my Luna and no one else!” I bellowed. “This stubbornness of yours you inherited from your father is going to land you in trouble one day.” She wriggled her head. “It is you who is being stubborn here mother.” “Okay before things get worse, should I cancel the party or what?” Matthew intervened. “No!” “Yes!” He stared at both of us confusingly. “I am the Alpha, do as I say.” I ordered and he nodded before leaving. I inched closer to my mother but she still maintained that annoying resolve. “Whether it’s against your wish, Lia Thompson is going to be my Luna.” “Don’t be too sure about that Kelvin.” She responded with a smug look. “Tomorrow is the full moon, remember, the moon goddess might mate you to another person.” I growled but her smug look still remained. “The night will soon be here. I assure you, The moon goddess will make her mine.” I asserted before threading up the stairs furiously. “I pray you’re wrong.” I heard her say downstairs and it enraged me further. I already turned twenty five this year yet I was mateless. Whether my mother liked it or not, it was Lia or nobody else!
