Chapter 132

“Oh, one more thing Sir. Since it’s dusk already, there was a strange phenomenon happening right now on the farm.” Austin said.  “What phenomenon? What do you mean?”  “Fireflies are swarming the mango orchard.” “Fireflies? Is there something wrong? As far as we know, fireflies in the area near the farm are pretty extinct, and never in my life I would hear this again. It feels like when Mercedes told me about this before.” Roman said,  “What is it about, my dear?” Mercedes stood up from the bench.  “Austin told me here that something strange was happening at the farm, specially at the mango orchard.” Roman answered, holding her wife’s hand.  “Something strange?” Mercedes asked, looking at Austin, puzzled.  “There was a swarm of fireflies at the Mango orchard now, and everyone was surprised to see it. Even the shaman that was with us today.” Austin answered. “Fireflies? Why does it feel familiar? It’s like when I headed out alone in the orchard and saw them. But why would they appear now?” Mercedes said.  “That’s what we are checking now. They are really swarming on the trees as if they were Christmas lights. The shaman told us that it was an omen.” Austin explained, “Omen? Did he tell you what kind of omen? Is it bad or a good one?” Roman asked.  “No, he did not tell us. That's all he had to say, and left instantly after that.” Austin answered.  “Well, let’s hope that it’s not something bad. We should continue praying for Sun.” Mercedes said.  “Yes, we will, Ma’am. I think I need to go back to the farm for now. Thank you, and please take care Sir and Ma’am.” Austin said, “You too, Austin. Thank you so much.”  After that, Austin left the couple and both of them were really curious about the recent happenings, especially what they heard from him. But they decided not to dwell on it because their priority now is their son, who is still battling for his life. An hour passed and there was still no news from the doctors. The couple was already getting worried. After a few moments of waiting and praying, the doctor who led the surgery went out of the operating room. Mercedes held Roman’s hand tightly, waiting for what the doctor will say to them.  “Mr. and Mrs. Mercedes, thank you so much for trusting us. We did our best and we were able to operate him successfully. We can make sure that he will survive, but due to the trauma to your son’s body, he might take time to recover. He is still in a coma.” The doctor said, and bowed his head.  “Coma?” Mercedes said, and began to cry. Roman hugged him to comfort him.  “We did our best, Mrs. Mercedes. It will take time for him to recover, and all we can do now is pray and support your son with this battle.” The doctor said,  Hearing those words broke the couples heart. They were thinking about how such a young person could experience all of this. He still has a lot of things to do, and dreams to fulfil. As the doctor left the couple, Mercedes looked at the direction of the operating room and something caught her attention. There was a small light flickering, and it was going out towards them.  It felt like it was dancing around, and she could feel the warmth coming from the little light. It’s like it was telling them that everything will be okay, and all they have to do is believe and pray. Mercedes held out her hand, and the flickering light perched on her palms.  “A firefly?”
