Chapter One
Ring! Ring!  Her phone started blaring off the hook waking her from a perfect and deep slumber. From the dreams of man with dark hair and deep blue eyes that made you believe you were in the very sky. It was hard to believe she was nearly thirty and still single. It would have killed her mother if she was still alive. Gasping softly when it went off for the third time she reached over grabbing it, fumbling to swipe the green button.   "Hello?" She asked half asleep with her head still halfway in the pillow.  "Scarlett, we got a body. You... You're going to want to be here for this one. I can't even begin to describe this scene to you." Her partner, Alec Ricardo, was over the phone and she could tell by the tone of his voice she had no time to process this.  "Where are you at?" Scarlett was suddenly wide awake sitting up on the side of her bed in her shorts and a tank top.  "Mile marker 15 of main at the edge of town. The road that meets 1-90 south. About a mile in from the road." Alec replied to her sounding as if he was walking back towards the road with his breath increasing showing effort that he was trying to get off the rocky mountain side.  "I'll be there in twenty." She clicked the phone off before he could answer and stood up trying to ignore her toes cringing under the cold hard wood once her feet got off the black fluffy carpet. Grabbing some blue jeans, a black long sleeve under shirt, her denim jacket and her heavy black jacket with fax fur around the edge it had sherpa lining to keep her warm. The morning chill was already biting but the sun wasn't even quite rising just yet. At negative 10 they would be in harsh territory.  Slipping into her boots, gloves, and scarf she topped it off with a hat. Grabbing her keys she said good bye to her black husky wolf mix, Yukon, and left her family home. After her mother died and father nowhere to be found she was raised by her aunt until she was eighteen when she inherited over a five million cash and her family home. It was two stories, in the richer side of the town, if there had to be one. Four bedrooms, three baths, a dinning room, living room and den it was the most desired house but you'd never know someone lived there. Scarlett hardly found herself there these days. Not since she made detective. The only place that looked lived in was her bedroom. Even her fridge was mostly empty. If it wasn't water, beer, whisky or her juice for breakfast when she had the chance.  Unlocking her black dodge charger, she slid into the driver seat and turned on the heat. Giving it a moment to warm up she messaged Alec letting him know she was on her way. Pulling out of her drive way she started for the location of the body. The roads were icey so she took a bit longer then she intended, but she was pulling up to the blaring red and blue lights in no time. Getting out of the car she made sure to pull up her jacket trying to keep the bitter cold from touching her skin, and slide her gun into her hip holster. Showing off her badge one of the officers brought her to the taped off area where Alec and the team were currently taking pictures.  "There you are." Alec waved her over. Scarlett quickly ducked under the yellow tape and over to the body. She gasped softly and looked away from the gruesome scene. "I told you."  "I just wasn't expecting... Well you never know what to expect but this is just so sad. Let's check it out." Scarlett said getting closer to the body. Kneeling she sighed softly. "She's no older then 20, this is most certainly not fresh. A few days at the most. Someone took there time with her. Her skin was filleted off but we won't know the real death until the autopsy. She's lost a lot of blood, but someone really had to have enjoyed this to have gutted her and took out her insides." Scarlett sighed standing up and nodding for the coroner to take the body. Alec knew better then to mess with her when she got into the mood. She admired the scene around them tilting her head in thought. Following her Alec waited for her to finally talk. "She wasn't killed her, or left here either. Around her is distorted like she landed her or was thrown here. There is fresh snow here but if you look at it her body tumbled down this rocky cliff side. Get forensics to scout out for blood, body parts, anything that might be relevant to our case." Scarlett let Alec deal with them and started up the mountain side. Coming to the top of the cliff she took a moment to look around. That girl had to have been there for at least a day. Fresh snow was covering tracks, blood, anything that might have led her to where she came from. Looking around she did spot a clearing in the woods with branches broken as if someone came through and rushed out quickly.  "Did you find anything?" Alec asked joining her as she walked over to them and admired them in close through.  "So they came through these woods, but it wasn't one man. No one man was running with the body and another was following her. He gets her to the cliff where something happens and the body tumbles down the cliff and lands there at the bottom. There was a confrontation back into the woods and they took off that direction. We need them to sweep this area and see if any property is out this way." Scarlett tucked her hands into her pockets after getting back down the mountain and looked at the captain as he walked over to them.  "What do we got?" Captain Rodgers asked tucking his own hands away. Scarlett let Alec go and looked at the crime scene.  "Young adult, blonde, tormented with most of her inners taken out. She's got skin missing, but her insides were removed after her death. There is evidence that the body wasn't left here. She tumbled down the cliff and landed her, after what appears to be an altercation. Of course it's snowed since then and we are lacking evidence of who this is. I am hoping something is on the body. Maybe fingerprints or dna, but that is highly doubtful. I am headed back to the office now to see what the autopsy has to say." Scarlett replied following him back to the cars. He paused by her parked car and watched her open the door.  "Keep me up to date. The news is going to be all over this. We are going to have eyes all over this." Rodgers said before letting her get into her car and start it up again.  The drive back into town was short, the roads were clearing and the temperature rising. By the time she reaches the small brick building it was just over 0. Still freezing, but at least it wasn't bitter. Taking off the scarf and gloves off when she got inside the heat felt good against her skin which burned but felt so good. Taking off her black jacket she slid it onto the coat rack in her office and sat down in her chair. Hitting the morgue on her phone she let it ring while going over the report from before she got to the scene.  "Jordy speaking." The assistant medical examiner chimed in all to cheerful over the phone making her sigh heavily pressing two fingers into her eyes. How was this boy in a police station.  "Yeah, I need to know if the autopsy for our Jane Doe is ready. Yes the one form this morning. Absolutely I will be down there momentarily." She said talking to the boy while trying to wake up all together. Hanging up the phone she stood up just as Alex came through the door handing her a coffee and danishes. "You are a life saver. In the mean time our Jane Doe's autopsy is ready." Putting the sweet treats down on her desk she sipped the coffee and headed to the elevator. "What do we got Doc?" Scarlett said the moment the door opened meeting Doctor Richard.  "Well it would seem to be cut throat, but it's not. There are bite marks on her legs, arms and hands. Human by the looks of them, until you get to the thighs and arms. They become more animal. There are ligature marks on her neck, as well as significant bruising up and down her body. They managed to find some of her insides, stomach, and intenstance mainly. This was in fact the mark that killed her. They cut her stomach open vertically and her heart, liver, kidneys and lungs were cut out intentionally. She was then frozen for a few days before left out. I would say she's been dead for at least five days. That didn't stop them from cutting on her. If you are asking what I am thinking, someone wasn't just killing her they were eating here." Doc Rodgers replied taking her into the morgue and to their jane doe on the metal slab. Handing Scarlett the paperwork she sighed softly and looked at the girl.  "Poor girl. She didn't deserve this. Thank you Johanna." Scarlett replied before walking away from the Doctor and back upstairs. Alec was on her heels but still didn't say anything to her. Coming out she looked up at him finally and felt bad. She did this quite often. Did things on her own. Solved cases without him. He never seemed to mind, but she did. "So what do we know about our DOA?" "Well she's not a Jane Doe. He name is Stacy Longdale. She is nineteen years, from Billings. She was here visiting her parents. They reported her missing a week ago." Alec handed her the profile just as she sat down in her chair and took a bite of the danish. Moaning softly enjoying it while going over everything. This was going to take everything in her to find leads, to find anything.  "Well I guess we better start there. Let's go get the family and have them identify the body." Scarlett said shoving danish in her mouth and putting on her coat, hat and gloves again. Alec nodded and followed her to her car. After it warmed up she drove to the address on the paper, and sighed softly. This was the part she hated. Telling her family she was possibly dead. Grabbing her badge and gun she slide them into her belt and got out leaving the car running. They walked up to the door and knocked.  "Yes? Can I help you?" A middle aged woman opened the door almost looking like an older version of the girl on their table. That made it so much harder.  "I am Detective Lazarus and this is Detective Ricardo." Scarlett spoke up for them and tried to keep herself from showing the pain in her heart.  "Is this about Stacy? Did you find her? Is she okay?" The woman's eyes lit up with hope and it hurt Scarlett to have to kill that. "George! Come quickly! Come in! Come in!" Alec and Scarlett entered the single level home and paused in the entrance of the home.  "Mrs. and Ms. Longdale is this your daughter?" Scarlett asked holding up a picture once both of them were in the room together. Almost instantly the woman was screaming and falling into her husband's arms. That gave her all the confirmation she needed. "Can you tell me the last time you saw your daughter?" "Um..." Mr. Longdale tried to keep composure and cleared his voice. "She went out with her friend Erica last friday night, she called us at 11pm said she would be staying the night with her and to expect her for brunch the next day. When she didn't show up we called Erica who said she had left at midnight because she wasn't feeling good. She said she texted her saying some weird man was following her and she was scared. Figured she dipped into another friends house. I reported her missing that night. We've held onto hope she survived all this time." He was about to break again but Scarlett couldn't let them see the emotions building in her.  "I am so sorry for your Loss Mrs. Longdale. Alec can you get Erica's information while I call the captain." Scarlett let her partner take over walking back out the door. Sucking back her tears she hit Rodgers in her phone.  "Hello Detective Lazarus. What's the update?"  "Our Jane Doe is actually Stacy Longdale. According to her mother and father she went missing last friday after leaving her friend Erica's house. She was followed by a man but that was about as much as we know. I am going to have some officers pick her up and bring her to the offices."  "Keep up the good work Detective. We need to solve this case as quickly as possible." "Understood."  Clicking the phone off just as Alec came out she looked at the address and followed Alec back to her car. Sliding in she pulled out her radio and had two officers go pick her up. Driving back to the office again she felt relief when she pulled off her jacket, gloves and hat again. Sighing heavily she turned around with her hand on her head. Looking up she was suddenly looking a tall, dark and handsome stranger. He had short dark hair, a beard, deep blue eyes like the sea and she could see his muscles through his shirt. He was tall and clearly built. "Who are you?" "Hello Detective, I am Agent Luther. Pleasure to meet you."
