The full moon hung large in the sky with hints of yellow shining from it. Delta and the other women had worked tirelessly on making food and building a fire for tonight. They all thought it was a great idea and something they needed. Life was so serious that having a bit of a party would be a good release. The fire in the center of compound was the largest fire anyone had ever seen. To be honest it made Baron and Pax nervous, brought too much attention.
There was a fiddle and a piccolo playing music and the women danced with their children around the fire, then their mates joined in. A barrel of wine was taken out and opened. Baron did not partake in the drinking but he didn’t mind anyone else enjoying it. He watched from his seat, Adella was laughing and talking with Delta and the other women. She caught him staring and he didn’t look away, he let her see him staring at her. She smiled slightly at him and went back to enjoying herself.
“Excuse me, Alpha has an announcement.” Pax got everyone’s attention. The music stopped, the laughing stopped. Everyone was fixed on their Alpha.
“Thank you Pax.” Baron stood up and his eyes shifted to black.
Adella heart started beating wildly in her chest.
“Yes, thank you Pax.” Sortas said with everyone noting the vocal changes they knew it was Baron’s wolf.
“Adella.” He addressed her and looked her way. “I grovel at your feet, in hopes of attaining some resemblance of forgiveness.” He got down on his knees still facing her, looking right at her. “I wronged you. I hurt you. I made you flee for your life.” A rumbling rolled through the crowd. “I will beg for your forgiveness until the day I die. I cannot pay enough penance for what I did.” He looked around at everyone. “Pack, I wanted you to hear me say these things to your Luna. I promise that I will never stop working towards her forgiveness but I do not expect ever to get her forgiveness in totality. I do not deserve it. Our mates are our most precious assets, the one thing that makes us stronger than any other and they should be treated as such. From this day forward. Any wrong doing against your mate will be met with a swift and iron fist.” Sortas made his way over to Adella and bent the knee to her, bowing to her. The rest of the pack followed suit. Adella gave him a smile and a nod.
“Now we run!” Sortas shifted Baron and everyone who could, followed suit and ran off into the woods. And so began the tradition of Luna celebration with a run under the full moon.
Adella watched them all disappear in to the forest around them. Marcus in her arms began squirming and calling out to be fed. “That was remarkable.” Delta came up next to her with her own child at her breast. “These men are not made to beg forgiveness.”
Adella released her breast and Marcus took it hungrily “Well, it’s a good change. We are not possessions. I would have stayed home if I wanted to be a possession.” Which brought Adella to another thought. “I think we need to train to fight as well.”
Delta smiled, she knew she loved her Luna. “I couldn’t agree more.”
Over the next few years the pack trained everyone who could fight. Even training the children to defend themselves. Adella never lost the memory of that terrible dream of watching Baron being killed. Delta and Adella were sparring with swords when Marcus came running up on his horse with a bow and quiver slung over his shoulder. He looked much older than his almost 4 years of age with his wild white blond hair bouncing with each strike of the horses hooves; his horse jumped the fence and powered through the training field. Marcus pulled his bow and slung an arrow at a target and just missed but he was getting closer.
His face said it all as he pulled his horse to a stop in front of his father. Baron smiled proudly and patted the blued eyed horse on the nose “Your aim is getting much better son. You just need practice, and patience. As you grow and get stronger it will come easier.”
“I know father, but just once….” He looked back at the target.
“It will happen, son, it will happen.” Marcus pulled his horse up and went to try again. The horse happily moved out.
The compound had grown with people and animals. Everyone was flourishing really. Women were just as good at battle as the men. Adella leading the way with Delta close by her side. Working on defense and offense they made the boarder of their territory and began walking their territory every night. They also started to build the pack house and the Alpha house with brick instead of the logs and sod. Having plenty of goods to trade helped get the raw materials to start such projects. It seemed like everyday the pack moved forward together, growing stronger and stronger. Adella couldn’t help feel pride when she looked over the compound but in the back of her mind she felt an impeding doom, as if this could not go on forever. She watched again as her son rode his horse around the grounds. She tucked her worry away as she turned into the pack house to start working on dinner.
Far away……
“I have the scout you sent to the ocean cliffs, he has returned Alpha Captain.” A booming voice announced ahead of the scouts entry into the great stone hall.
“What say you?” Alpha Captain Stone asked him from his high seat at the end of the hall. His black hair reflected a blue hue, it was shoulder length but kept a very neat appearance. His nose was longer and slim flowing easily into his high cheek bones. He was a good looking man with piercing brown eyes that were narrow. He wore a bear skin pelt around his shoulders making him look even more formidable.
A young man hurried down the hall and took a knee once he was in front of Alpha Captain. “Alpha, the compound is quite large with many goods being produced. They are building stone houses and training every day. The leader seems to have some sort of training in the art of war.” He was very careful not to call Baron Alpha, fearing for his life. “They are organized and even the women train and fight.”
“Ha! Training useless women to fight. They must be desperate for soldiers. Tell me more.”
“The female leader, they call her Luna. She has long white blond hair, she fights as well. She seems to lead with the male leader. They are married. She has several women that fight and follow her closely. They also use their horses to train with.” The young man had thought that was unusual.
“Thank you for your work here. You may return to your family.” Alpha Captain waved him off. Something about his report disturbed him deep in his soul. Had he heard of the white haired woman before? He couldn’t be sure. He never thought women were much to fuss over. Pretty much useless for anything other than making babies and cooking for him. “Clarissa!” He shouted for his maid.
“Yes, Alpha Captain.” Fear in her voice, she did everything to be invisible around here.
“Gather the councilmen for a meeting in 2 moons.”
Clarissa curtsied “Yes, Alpha Captain.” She hurried away as quietly as possible.
Alpha Captain Stone was a leader that used fear to ward compliance with his subjects. Often torturing people in public to keep the fear level up. It was all he had ever known, his father had ruled with an iron fist and virtually no love for his family. They had been the only werewolf compound ever, until now. It irked him that someone could come challenge him for his position.
