-Haze's Point of View-
I feel my mate cuddle in closer to me and I watch as her eyes close and her breathing evens out. I wonder what all she has been through today, but as I listened to Marian explain what was going to to Helen I have more questions than I did when they first arrived. I turn towards my mate more and help to straighten her out some more so she'll be more comfortable and then turn to find Marian looking at me expectantly. She knows me well enough to know that I tend to listen and then ask my questions.
"What's wrong with her?" I'm trying not to jump to conclusions, there are lots of reasons a human might be tired and not able to train.
She looks me straight in the eye as she responds, "The humans have diagnosed her with fibromyalgia, but she has other problems that have not been diagnosed. I have a suspicion that since you turned out to be her mate that you will help her. I don't know if the mate bond can heal her, but maybe it helps to allow her to do what she needs to do to prepare for what is coming. She will need to see the pack doctor to at least establish where she is at now to see if she begins to get better. The doctor will also need to provide her with a few medications, at least for a while. She may even get better on her birthday, when her gift truly reveals itself." She pauses, thinking. "Her gift is very rare and is only given when absolutely necessary. For all we know, this might be the cost for the gift. I don't actually think that, but it is possible I suppose. Like I told her, we have to take one step at a time."
I nod and try to process this. "Is it normal for her to feel so tired?" I know nothing about this illness.
She nods slowly, looking at me carefully. "Yes, it is. Her main illness is a chronic pain illness. Basically she has pain spread throughout her entire body. She never gets a break from it, not even while she is sleeping. She has to rest often and may either sleep a lot or barely at all. It causes some cognitive problems, like memory loss and being disoriented. There are other parts to this illness but all very from moment to moment on its severity."
I tear up a little, I cannot believe that she wasn't treated. Who lets their child live like this? "Why didn't her family get her treatment?"
Marian looks at Helen and comes over to touch her head, "There isn't anything that fixes it. There are medications that help some people, but not others. Some medication only makes the illness tolerable. I tried to heal her, but since I couldn't it means this is part of her journey. Now don't give me that look, I don't like it any more than you do."
I sigh and hug Helen tighter, she whimpers a little and I immediately loosen my hold. She relaxes again and I feel some tears slip down my face. "So we have to watch her go through this and keep her hidden from Marco?"
Marian wipes my cheeks, "She is strong. You'll see. Yes, it is hard to watch, but it is hard not to admire here for her determination. At least for now, she is safe here. I have hidden our presence here and will continue to do so for as long as I can. Today she rests and if she is up to see the doctor, I think she should but tomorrow will be soon enough if not. Get to know her, spend time with her. Ask her to help with some work around your office, she'll feel useful and see that you need her. As long as she sits and doesn't to to much on her feet, she'll be fine. Now, I am going to go get her some clothing and stuff from the store." She begins to make her way out of the room, "Oh, she shouldn't wake up alone. Either you or me should be with her. She'll be to disoriented with anyone else right now."
I look over to my beta, James, and my gamma, Jacob, to give them directions on how to proceed without me for the rest of the day. Then I carefully pick up Helen and take her to my room. I'm not certain if she understands what being mates means, but I'm not putting her in another room. I lay down and just watch her for a while. Her shoulder length black hair was curly and a little messy, but adorable. I took her glasses off and put them on the side table and drew her to me. She didn't resist at all and pressed herself even closer. Marian told Helen that the reason that Helen could stand me being close to her was because we were mates, I will have to ask more questions about that later. I begin to drift off, I have never been so comfortable.
I suddenly wake up to my mate sitting up and looking around. When our eyes meet I smile at her, hoping to coax a smile from her again. I did, she smiled and then leaned back into me. "I'm sorry I woke you."
"Don't be sorry, did you have a good nap?" I look at her and push some hair off of her face.
She blushes a little, she's so adorable. "I did, thank you. I don't know when I have ever slept that well." We're quiet for a minute, "Can I use your bathroom?"
"Sure." I lift her up and put her in the bathroom, then walk out closing the door behind me. When she comes out, I go to her and pick her up again.
She laughs and it's the most beautiful sound I have ever heard. "I can walk you know? I'm not to certain why Marian carries everywhere, I forgot to ask." She scrunches her face a little and then shakes her head a little.
I just smile, "I like carrying you."
"Well, thank you. Where is Marian?"
"She went to go get you clothing and whatever else you may need. Come to think of it, she never did mention why you didn't bring any of your things and why you're in pajamas." I glance at her clothes and then back to her face. She starts tearing up so I sit on the edge of the bed and pull her closer to comfort her.
"She made a gas line blow my parents' house up, they believe I was killed in the explosion. She said that demon would hopefully buy that I died and would stay away from my family." She cried for a while and I just held her, trying to soothe her.
"I promise, as soon as it is safe I'll take you to them and you can tell them you're very much alive." She smiled and leaned up to kiss my check. That's the moment I knew I could never let this girl go. She's my other half.
"So Marian explained, at least partly, what mates are but maybe you should explain what that really means for us." She smiles and rests he head on my shoulder.
I think for a minute, "Mates are like to halves of a whole. You are my other half and I am yours. No one else will be able to take your place in my life and vice versa. Once mates are bonded they are together for life, sort of like the human version of marriage. Does that make sense?"
She nodded, "I think so. How are mated bonded?"
Here was the possibly tricky part, this would sound strange to a human. "Werewolves bond by marking each other. Our incisors grow longer and basically bite the other where the neck and shoulder meet. I'm sure that sounds very strange to you."
I could tell she was thinking it through. Then she lifted her hand to her neck, "So, you are going to bite me here?" She lifted an eyebrow, questioning what I just told her.
I move her hand and move my head to her neck and shoulder. I rub my nose on her skin, both taking in her scent and leaving mine on her. Then I kiss the spot where I will mark her when she is ready. She shudders and tries to hold back a moan. My wolf, Alex, tries to come forward to mark her. I pull back, but I know my eyes are changing between my green eyes and Alex's dark ones. When I am able to push Alex back, I turn my attention back to Helen hoping I didn't scare her. She's just looking at me with intrigue and waiting for me to explain.
"Where I kissed you is where I will mark you. My eyes were changing colors because my wolf wanted to come forward to mark you right then." I am really hoping I didn't scare her.
She smiles and puts her hand on my cheek. "I look forward to meeting your wolf. I do have to say that it does sound a bit scary that you are going to bite me, but when you were doing whatever you were doing to my neck, it was anything but scary."
I grin and kiss her marking spot again. "Would you like to meet my wolf now?"
She lights up and nods, so I bring Alex forward to meet her.
