CHAPTER 3

THE TASK.

I got to the door as I began to knock but there wasn't a response,I twisted the door handle as I discovered it was locked. There was no doubt the girl was in great danger as images of how Philip died flipped through my mind,I ran immediately to call the internal security to destroy the door.

Crystal stood terrified as she looked at the female creature who turned to a normal human being after moving closer to her.

"What are you doing here Mimi?.....why do you keep following me?"crystal snapped.

"Well, I'm just following mum's order, you're taking too long to complete your task and I'm not leaving until you carry it out crystal"she said

"I've told you that I'm not interested in carrying out any task to prove my worth, I won't join you all to do evil.....these are innocent humans"crystal said.

"It's our tradition and you know that perfectly well, to be amongst the mermaid community a young mermaid must attempt her first kill the moment she's of age. It's that simple"Mimi responded.

"Did you say it's that simple?.....oh because of how you kill people without remorse you really think I'll be like you?....that guy at the forest last night did nothing to you, he had a life and a family and you wasted him just like that"crystal said exasperatedly.

"Oh spear me the rubbish crystal, do not act so naive because you don't know this humans. You have no idea what they do to mermaids when they're caught, you'll be butchered like the land creatures is that not pure evil too?..... they're not better off than us, you better open your eyes and grow up"Mimi snarled.

"Go back and tell your queen that I crystal will never kill to be part of the community..... I'll never!"crystal said as she moves closer to her looking her in eyes.

The internal security had gotten to the door as I hurried them to sabotage the handle.

"Hurry up she'll be dead in no time please "

Students had gathered to know what was happening as everyone was eager to know who was inside.

The door was broken as we trooped in and saw crystal and some other girl about living the restroom....I quickly rushed to crystal and held her.

"Are you alright......did something hurt you"I asked as I turned her around to check if she was attacked.

"I'm perfectly fine....is something wrong?"she asked as she looks at confusingly.

The other girl left as she looked at me, and my question was how was it possible the creature didn't show herself to crystal since I saw her go into the same room with her.

"What nonsense is this young man,are you trying to play with our intelligence?"one of the internal security ranted.

"I'm so sorry I thought I saw something"I pleaded.

"You're ain't going unpunished for this abeo and I'm calling your parents because they will be paying for this door that just got destroyed" principal toyin who had showed up from nowhere said as she adjusted her glasses and left.

All students left with murmurs and giggles as I felt totally embarrassed, the internal security took me to the principal's office afterwards.

I was having dinner with Martha when I started hearing rantings and noises from my parents room they noises was getting louder as dad matched to the sitting room as he landed a hot slap on my face.

"Is it that you're now going mad or you now smoke weeds like these useless vagabonds at odioma's junction"he yelled in our dialect

"Calm down honey,these didn't warrant you to give him such an hot slap....what if he goes deaf?"mom pleaded.

"Why would he create false alarm at the school that made them destroy school properties, now they're calling me to come and pay. How the hell do I pay the sum of #70,000 in less than two days?, Do I sell the boy to get the money or is it my sailor job we're managing with to survive that would do the magic?"my father continues to rant.

I said nothing I looked at him having tears in my eyes, growing up I had never been friends or been open to him on how I felt because I was scared he would yell just as he had always do.

I stood up as I dashed out of the house in anger slamming the door at their faces.

"I'll deal with him in this house, I promise him that."he concluded as he left.

Mom tells Martha to clean the area when she's done eating as she follows her husband to calm him down.

~THE NEXT DAY.

Martha and I had reached the school gate as we were restricted from entering, they had later allow Martha to enter as the internal security told me to return home because the principal had ordered that until I was able to pay for the damages caused the previous day I won't be allowed to attend classes.

I turned as I left the school but decided not to return home, taking a walk was all I needed.

I trekked all the way to the sea shone as I walked around, I sat down and glanced at the sea thinking of all that had gone through within these few days.Philip's death shocked me the most.

Suddenly I felt a warm touch on my shoulders as I looked to see who it was.

"CRYSTAL"I called......

crystal and abeo is sitting together as they discussed.

Crystal: I'm really sorry what you had to go through in school today.

Abeo: it's actually fine, I think I can handle it.

Crystal: I'm also sorry about your friends lost..... Philip was his name.

Abeo: yeah he was more like a brother to me

Abeo and crystal start to look at each other as they smiled.

Abeo: come on let's dive into the sea and play.

Crystal: (shocked) what?....

Abeo is on the boat with his dad and workers as they rode to the middle of the sea to fish.

Suddenly abeo saw a woman staring at them from the woman.

Abeo: (shouts) there's a woman in the water!!!!!!....

The fishermen sights her as they discovered it was a mermaid.

Fishermen 1:(yells) it's a mermaid!!!!.

They began to fire their arrows towards the creature as it dives beneath the water revealing her tails, suddenly there was an heavy storm as they boat began to sink.
