Suspicions

I must have fallen asleep. I woke up to no missed calls or even a text from Kai. I call him but it goes straight to voicemail. I become more worried. It's not like Kai to not answer my calls. I wait fifteen minutes before I try calling again. This time he answers.
Kai: Hey babe.
Me: Hey you never called last night. I was getting worried.
Kai: I'm sorry love. I fell asleep as soon as I got home.
Me: It's ok. You're coming over for movie night tonight, right?
Kai: Of course. I miss my princess.
I always smile when he calls me princess. Tonight is movie night and I'm excited. I miss him so much. He's always busy with work, and we haven't had s*x since our anniversary. I know he probably wants to just as badly as me. I can't wait to see him tonight.
It's time for movie night. Everyone is getting settled in. Kai isn't here yet nor has he called or texted. I went into the kitchen to help Lilly out with the drinks. Monica's just having juice. After we're done making them, we head over to everyone and join them.
Me: Has anyone heard from Kai?
Everyone: No.
I sent a text and got no reply. I told them to go ahead and start the movie. I try calling again and it goes to voicemail. Maybe he's in a meeting that's running late. I kept texting and calling and still nothing. The movie ends and Kai never showed.
Lilly: I'm sure he's just been busy. With his new promotion and all, the job must be more demanding. He has more responsibilities.
Me: Ok. Well, I'm going to bed. I have work in the morning.
Lilly: Ok. Night sis.
I head to bed and everyone else decides to watch another movie. I didn't want to feel like the 5th wheel. Seeing how he hasn't replied or called me back, I just go to bed.
I woke up the next morning to get ready for work. I checked my phone. I have a text from Kai saying he was sorry. I scoff and throw the phone down. I shower and start getting dressed. I leave him on read.
I leave the apartment and head to work. As I was walking, I was debating whether I wanted to text Kai back when I ran into someone. My purse falls and everything falls out. I squatted down to start picking up my items. The stranger helped me.
When I look up, I'm met instantly by an ocean blue eye with hazel around the outside. His black hair is covering one of them. He's the same color as Kai. He's got a sleeve of tattoos on his right arm. Ears pierced. Extremely toned and built. Damn, he is good-looking. He hands me my stuff.
Guy: Uhh....hi.
Me: Hi. Sorry I'm so clumsy.
He gives me the most dazzling smile. Damn, I thought the eyes, body, and face were attractive. The first thing to catch my eye when he smiled was his cuspids. At that point, f**k the flawless teeth. I'm a sucker for teeth that look like fangs. Call it my weird fetish/kink. I start imagining just one scrap across my neck. I can't take my eyes off of them. Snap out of it Melanie! You're engaged. You're off limits. I don't want to be rude, so I smile back.
Me: Thank you.
Guy: No worries. Umm....may I know your name?
Me: Melanie. And yours?
Guy: Liam.
Me: Well, I have to go. It was nice meeting you, Liam.
Liam: Nice meeting you too.
I pick up my pace before I'm late to work. I open up and wait for customers to come in. I'm folding sweaters when I hear the door open. It's Kai. I continue folding.
Kai: Babe, I'm so sorry I missed movie night.
Me: Whatever.
Kai: Princess, don't be like that.
I turned away from him. I start sniffing the air. There's a strong smell of women's perfume. I pulled him close, and it was coming from him. The perfume screamed cheap hooker.
Me: Why do you smell like a girl?
Kai: I borrowed some of Monica's perfume. I ran out of cologne.
Me: Why not ask Leon?
Kai: He's mad at me.
I think back on what Monica was saying earlier. I really find his story hard to believe, but I trust Kai. He understands me, and he knows I've been hurt in the past. I know he wouldn't do that to me.
Me: You ignored me all night!
Kai: My phone was dead.
Me: You didn't have a charger?
Kai: No.
Me: Kai, we'll discuss this later. I need to get back to work.
He goes for a kiss and I turn my head. His lips landed on my cheek. He kisses my forehead and says he promises to call me tonight. I'll hold him to his word. I look back to see him still looking at me as he walks out the door backwards. I waved him off.
My boss decided to close the store early, so everyone went home. When I get home, Lilly and Briggs are hanging out in the living room. I threw myself onto the small part of the sectional. She looks at me already knowing something is wrong. She motions for Briggs to give us some alone time.
Lilly: What's wrong?
Me: Is it really that noticeable?
Lilly: Uh.... yeah it is. So what's up?
Me: Its Kai.
Lilly: What did he do ?
Me: He said he was going to call me last night and never did. This morning I woke up to no calls, no messages. Then, before I went to work, I got a text apologizing. Then he showed up to the store to say his phone had died, and he had no way to charge it. Not to mention he smelt like a girl's perfume, saying he borrowed it from Monica.
Lilly: Melly, do you think maybe you are overreacting? Maybe he didn't have a charger or did, and it didn't work, so he actually wasn't able to charge it. As for the perfume, would you rather him smell like a girl or stank? It's honestly probably nothing.
Me: But it's weird.
Lilly: Melly, you're about to get married. Do not let something small like this destroy what you guys have.
Me: You're right. Kai wouldn't lie or hurt me. He loves me. Thank you for the talk.
Lilly: What are roommates, I mean future in-laws for?
I get up and give her a hug before going to my room. I get undressed and go take a shower. After I finish, I look in the mirror at my body. I'm not a 10, but I think Kai is happy with me and that is all that matters. I go to my room and get dressed. Should I text Kai or not? I lay back on my bed and took a short nap.
