Facing The Past And Present

"Kate, I can't believe we ran into you here. I never would have thought I would see you again in such a place." The woman beside Ethan spoke with a hint of meaning in her voice, stealing Kate's attention. She was Kate's stepsister, Irina. And Ethan was her childhood friend and ex-boyfriend. They broke up because he wanted to study overseas, and Kate knew full well back then that their relationship wouldn't work when they were miles away from each other, so she decided to break it off with him, so he could focus on his studies and his dreams without any hindrances. "It's good to see you too, Irina. It seems you're enjoying my family's wealth. How's mother, by the way? I do hope you don't miss me too much." Kate easily caught up with what she meant and countered her poisonous words with her own. The years seemed to have done nothing to quell the animosity between the two of them. Irina's eyes twitched, but she composed herself. She then noticed Ace, and her astonishment was evident when she realised who he was. 'This b***h! When did she and Mr. Anderson become so close? What is their relationship?! I should tell this to mother.' Kate saw her sister staring at Ace with malicious eyes and knew immediately what she was thinking. 'She still hasn't really changed. Sigh, back when I was still home she always copied everything I did and wanted to have what I have.' "Kate, who are they?" Ace asked, annoyed that he was being put in the side lines. With possessiveness, Ace's arm wrapped around Kate's shoulders, signalling to everyone that she was his. Ethan, who was with Irina, noticed the gesture and narrowed his eyes in response. Ace thought that Kate would jerk him away, but to his surprise, she even leaned into him, displaying some sort of affection that truly didn't share. Nonetheless, Ace was happy with her actions, even though he knew fully well that she had her motives for clinging onto him out of the blue. "Nice to meet you, Mr. Anderson. I'm Ethan Blanc, and this is Irina… my fiancée," Ethan introduced, lowering his voice slightly when mentioning the fiancée part, as if unsure whether he should say it aloud. Kate and Ethan then exchanged a brief look before pulling away. "It seems like you already know me. Nice to meet you," Ace replied, looking at Ethan and Irina. Then he turned to Kate and added with a serious face, "I'm Ace, Kate's fiancé." The shock was palpable, and Kate looked at Ace instantly with a mixture of questions and ridicule, silently wondering what he was playing at. 'What fiancee? What nonsense is he talking about?!' "Is this a joke? How could you be engaged to her? Are you crazy?" Irina couldn't contain herself and blurted out, looking at Ace and Kate back and forth, her eyes brimming with jealousy. Ethan turned to his fiancee, feeling embarrassed by what she said. He really didn't want to marry Irina, but he couldn't do anything since their family had already agreed to it. "What's so crazy about it, Ms. Irina? Care to share it with me?" Ace questioned her like an eagle, waiting for her response with an intimidating air, as if telling her 'If I don't like your answer, then it's over for you'. "I'm sorry Mr. Anderson, she's feeling a bit unwell and doesn't know what she's saying." Ethan decided to intervene, not wanting things to escalate. "Uhh, of course there's nothing wrong ha–ha, I was just shocked. You look perfect together, you got really lucky this time Kate." She spoke with a backhanded compliment, gritting her teeth, as she clenched the hem of her dress tightly. Kate was quite satisfied seeing her obnoxious behaviour. Before, she really thought Irina was someone that she couldn't reach, but now, she realised that she was just so weak and blind in the past that she couldn't see how messed up her family was. "Thank you, and I hope the best for you both," She said, looking at Ethan, smiling, but deep inside, she was feeling a little bit of sympathy for Ethan despite their past. He was too kind and a good-hearted person to be entangled with such a vile and corrupt woman. "Kate, wait..." Ethan called to her as she was about to turn around, his hand trying to reach her, but stopped midway. "Yes?" Kate asked, "What is it?" She asked again, seeing that Ethan wasn't talking. "Um…nothing, just take care of yourself." He said, and looked at her sincerely with his clear blue eyes, wishing her well. Kate smiled, hearing what he said. "You too." … They soon left and Kate was obviously in a sour state again. She was reminiscing about all the things she'd been through in the hands of her family. The cruel things that they did to her, and how she easily let them trample over her. When she was a kid, she had her mother to protect and care for her, and when she passed away she thought she was all alone, but then a boy suddenly turned her lifeless world back to life, but her happiness with him was only short-lived. And seeing Ethan again today, that last thread of her past being taken advantage of by the same people who made her life miserable made her angry. "That man, did you have a relationship with him?" Ace asked after he placed every single item they bought in the back of the car. "What's it to you?" Kate replied with a dead voice, her eyes were empty, as if she was lost in her deep sea of thoughts. "I'm just asking, I was rather curious why you exchanged such looks back there." Ace asked, pouring every speculation he had in his mind, but beneath his calm exterior, he was actually impatient of her answer, wanting to know what the real deal was between Kate and Ethan. "It was a long time ago. So just drop it. They mean nothing to mean now. It's all in the past." Kate gave a brief answer, and Ace felt a pang of jealousy and hatred towards the guy. He couldn't imagine Kate being so affectionate to another man other than him. "Well you should forget about him, you have me now." Kate's reaction was a mix of indifference and doubt. She brushed him off, leaving him feeling hanging as she went inside the car to calm her nerves down. Ace instantly followed her suit and went to the driver's seat. Before starting the car and driving off. A couple of minutes later, when they were in the middle of the freeway. Ace suddenly broke the stilled silence that enveloped them and coughed a little, stealing glances at Kate, making her look at him with questioning eyes. "I have something to tell you." he began talking, rather seriously now, locking eyes with her. "What is it?" Kate queried, holding the same amount of intensity that Ace was exuding. "My family." "What about them?" Kate felt something was off. Ace had always been straightforward with her, but she could see that he was rather taking his time to say what was on his mind right now. "They…they want to meet our son." The moment the words left his mouth, Kate's displeasure instantly surfaced. Her face showed grave disapproval. "What?!" 'What is he thinking?! Why didn't he say this crucial news before blabbering those nonsense he said earlier?!' "I won't let you." She said, knowing nothing good would come to her son if that happened. "I know what you're thinking. But you have to understand that they already know his existence, f**k! I think they have already even started making a move now. Many people want me dead, Kate. And if they see that Lucas is my weakness, they're going to target him, so we have to go in order for us to show our dominance to my clan, that we don't fear any of them. Do you understand?" Ace said thickly, his face blackening. And Kate was now completely aware of their predicament. 'If you hadn't searched for us then my son would still be safe and sound. Away from your family!' Kate wanted to say it aloud but she knew better than to speak ill of him at this time, especially since he was doing everything he could to protect them. "Fine, but I'm going with you. Those families of yours had better behave when we get there." She said, her voice full of resolve. "Of course, that's what I was planning." Ace smirked, impressed by her courage. Thinking that she really is the perfect woman for him. "And don't worry, no one can hurt you or Lucas, not while I'm around." Kate was surprised with this side of Ace. Although she was thankful for his protection, she wasn't entirely incapable of defending herself. She has already faced numerous things in her life, so this will just be a piece of cake for her. "You underestimate me too much, Ace. I can take care of myself. You haven't even seen the darker side of me yet." She muttered, her eyes glinting as she looked back at the window, staring at the scenery as they passed by. Ace was curious about what she meant, but left that part of the conversation aside, knowing that they both had secrets that they still didn't want to share with one another.
