A couple of days passed since the incident and Ace and Kate's relationship became cold.
She made sure to avoid Ace as much as possible and even slept in Lucas' room.
She became busy on the weekends since Lucas was going to start his first day at school.
Ace on the other hand became unsettled, since every time he came back from work, the whole mansion was quiet, and during breakfast, whenever he asked the maid where Kate and his son were, they would always tell him that they already ate before him.
He tirelessly tried explaining himself, but Kate was so good at playing hide and seek that he couldn't get a glimpse of her after what happened.
He even asked Lucas where she was but his son would always say the same answer. Lucas didn't even let him in the room to talk anymore, he would just stand outside the room while only seeing his son's head that was peeking at him with inquisitive eyes.
"Hmph! Mommy said not to tell you since you're a liar. Mommy also said that I shouldn't talk to you." That was what his son always said to him, clearly taking his mother's side, before he banged the door right in front of his face.
Ace could only release a sigh. Not only does he have to regain Kate's trust, but he now also has to court his son again to like him.
…
"Lucas, be good at school today, okay honey? Make sure to be friendly with all your classmates." Kate said, as she prepared her son's bag.
The driver was already waiting for them outside, but before they could walk out, Ace appeared in front of them and was happy for a moment when she finally saw Kate whom he hadn't seen in the last couple of days, but his brows almost immediately stretched together when he saw that Lucas was wearing what appeared to be a uniform for students.
"What's going on?" He asked, looking at Kate who was ignoring him.
"School daddy, it's my first day." Lucas excitedly jumped, snatching his bag from Kate and ran to the car.
Ace was left dumbfounded and looked at Kate with a wronged expression.
"Kate, why didn't you tell me he's going to school?" He asked, standing rather closely to her.
"You don't need to come with us, I can take him there on my own." She said, still being headstrong.
"Well I want to, he's also my son. So I'm going with you. I hope you know that both of you are the most important people to me now."
Kate was shocked at the very least when she heard what he said.
"Cancel my meetings, I'm going to spend my time with my family today." He said, looking at Carter who nodded his head in understanding.
"Let's go? I'll drive us there." Ace offered his hand to Kate giving her a reassuring smile.
Kate noticed his dimples appearing every time he smiles widely and couldn't help but focus her eyes on that spot.
'He really looks charming when he smiles. It's like he's out of a fairytale.'
She then moved her gaze to the hand that was stretched in front of her and was thinking if she should take it or not.
But it seemed that Ace was already out of patience since he suddenly grabbed her hand as he guided her out of the house, while waving his hand at his son who was grumpily standing outside of the car yelling at them to move faster.
It was like time slowed down for Kate, she couldn't exactly put into words what she was thinking. She only knew that she was like floating in the clouds as she stared at Ace, who was running while pulling her with him, looking at her with radiant eyes, and then her eyes shifted to her son who was practically looking adorable.
It was really like they were family now.
'What is this feeling? Why do I feel weird all of a sudden?'
…
They soon arrived at the school that Lucas was going to study at.
It was just a regular school, since Kate didn't want her son to be raised with too much privilege.
Some people were instantly murmuring at each other when they saw their expensive car driving. It was a limited edition after all, and they knew that only the rich could afford it. Ace rarely interacts in public but he made an exception today for his family.
They got out of the vehicle, and the school was literally swimming with parents and kids.
Some even bravely pointed out their fingers at Ace when they saw him, since he was a popular figure in society.
"Isn't that Ace Anderson? What is he doing here? And who is that woman?"
"Is that child his son? But I never heard any news that he got married."
People talked out loud, but Kate and Ace chose to ignore them and focus their attention on Lucas. This was also the reason why Kate didn't want to bring Ace with them, since he would only stir in the crowds.
"Do you remember what I said earlier, Lucas?" Kate asked.
"Uhummm, make friends and be good, and I promise I will make lots of friends mommy." Lucas nodded briskly and raised his hands to signal Kate that he wanted a hug, which she kindly gave to him without second thoughts.
Lucas then turned to look at Ace wanting to say something.
"Daddy, don't make mommy cry again, if you make her cry then I will tell my classmates that you're mean." He said with a puffed face trying to look brave, but all that they could see was a cute child trying to intimidate an adult, which was very funny to look at.
Ace then looked at Kate and wondered if she really shed tears because of what happened.
"Don't worry buddy, I'll make mommy smile brightly again today." He gave Kate a genuine smile.
Kate narrowed her eyes at Ace wondering what tricks he got on his sleeves for him to say something like that confidently.
'We'll see then.'
The bell rang shortly right after, and a teacher ushered the kids to go inside.
"Bye Mommy! Bye Daddy!" Lucas shouted as he ran towards his room with an excited face, unlike some of the kids who were already crying, not wanting their parents to leave.
"It seems like you raised a little soldier." Ace chuckled, waving his hands in the air and saying goodbye to Lucas.
Kate didn't have any intention of responding to him and just went back inside the car.
"Let's go home. I have something to do." She said as she sat in the front passenger seat.
"Not a chance, we're going somewhere first." Ace said, fastening his seatbelt.
"Where?"
"You'll see."
Kate was apprehensive if she wanted to go with him alone. But seeing his gleeful act towards her, she couldn't dare say no to him.
'Sigh… Just this once, I'll give you a chance.'
…
"What are we doing here?" She asked, seeing the new building that she knew was only exclusive to the higher elites.
'Is this the great plan he had in mind? Us going shopping?
"Just wait, and you'll see." Ace said, getting out of the car, jogging his way to Kate's door and opening it for her.
She stepped out and as her heels touched the ground, her hair was also pushed back by the wind that passed through her, creating an enticing sight.
"Let's go?" Ace offered his arms, but Kate just shrugged at him, walking alone.
Ace clenched his teeth from being ignored, but kept his cool and ran to catch up with her.
"What's happening here? Is the mall closed or something?" Kate asked upon seeing that there weren't any people around the place.
She then heard a low cough coming beside her, and turned to see Ace displaying a huge grin.
"It's only us for the next couple of hours, I booked the whole place for the both of us." He said, shocking Kate.
"What?! Why did you do that? Why did you spend so much money booking this place off when I didn't even ask for it?" She asked, slightly irritated.
"Spend? No you got it wrong, I don't need to spend anything, I simply just told the management and they happily gave us the time we need for ourselves." Ace replied, but his answer only raised more questions for Kate.
"And why would they do that?"
"Well, first thing is because I own this mall. And second, you should just accept my kind gesture, just point at everything you want and we'll buy it." Ace dropped as if it was just trifling information.
Kate gasped, she then looked closely at Ace to see if he was joking or not, but she didn't find any hint of deception.
'I sometimes forget this guy is a billionaire. I guess he's really not joking then. Hehe, well I guess I just have to help myself then.'
She then stood straight and turned left and right, and all she could see were highly branded stores.
Even though her family was rich, they weren't this rich, their family specialised in music and the arts, and although they could be considered elites, they were still far off if she were to compare their influence and wealth with the likes of Ace.
"If you're so sure, then I won't hold back." She gave him a cunning smile before proceeding to walk on one of the stores.
Three minutes later…
"You really didn't hold back, did you?" Ace chuckled, carrying all the bags that Kate bought on their way out.
"Why would I? You went to all this trouble just to make up for me. So let's just say I'm doing this for you and not for me." Kate said, laughing.
"Though it's still weird walking around in such a big place with no one inside. Next time, just take me here, and don't try doing anything fancy." She added.
Ace looked at her with a fond look. It was his first time hearing her laugh, and he would dare try anything just to hear them again.
They were about to head out when a voice suddenly called Kate's name out of nowhere.
She turned around, and her eyes instantly became alert, seeing the man that she was all too familiar with, and beside the man was a woman who clinged to him like her life depended on it.
"It's really you," the man said again.
"Ethan." Kate whispered almost inaudibly, her eyes darting straight at Ethan who was staring at her with full emotions plastered on his face.
Ace looked darkly at them, his eyes blackening upon seeing everything that was happening. He could tell that something had happened between the two of them. And he wants to know what exactly their relationship is.
