I noticed Dr Urie removing his gloves and mask. He sat me up in the chair and came to sit in front of me.
"Dr Weekes, can I just speak to Lola for a minute please. I'll call you back in soon."
Dr Weekes left the room and closed the door behind him. I gulped but saw Dr Urie staring deep into my eyes.
"Lola, I don't want to hurt you. It may be wrong for me to say this, but I care for you. I understand we only met this morning, but I've already discovered feelings for you. This is so unprofessional I know, but I thought I'd share this with you."
He stared into my eyes waiting for a response. But I had nothing to say. I couldn't believe what I just heard.
"I've made things awkward haven't I?"
I shook my head 'no' and he gave me a dainty smile on one side of his mouth.
"I'm your dentist. I'm suppose to care from a professional point of view, not like this."
I finally found the words to reply to the beautiful dentist.
"Dr Urie, I..."
"Call me Brendon."
This was strange...
"Okay, Brendon" I chuckled. "It's funny of you to come out with this. Because well, I admire you."
He smiled showing his gleaming white teeth.
"Let me take you out for dinner tonight Lola. My treat."
A huge smile appeared on my face. We hugged for a while. Then he got up and called Dr Weekes back into the room.
Dr Weekes appeared.
"Time to get this filling done" he winked at me.
As he walked past he whispered into my ear "time for me to be professional again."
I let out a giggle and laid back into the chair, both hands resting on the arm rests.
The chair was laid back into the usual position. Both Brendon and Dr Weekes slid on their surgical gloves, creating squeaky snapping sounds. But this time I didn't mind it. Masks were placed on, covering their mouths' and noses. Even behind Brendon's mask, I could tell he was smiling in my direction, I just couldn't see.
Brendon positioned the light so it's gleam was in a satisfying position. Dr Weekes placed a clean bib onto my chest and the procedure was ready to take place. For some strange reason, I wasn't worried one little bit.
Like usual, Brendon used his gloved fingers to retract my cheeks for a closer view of my teeth. His face was in my line of sight, and I loved it. Numbing cream was rubbed in my mouth and soon enough my face couldn't be felt.
I didn't feel the need to close my eyes, so I watched every single thing that happened.
Brendon stood up from his stool and picked up a long sharp needle. He placed it into a liquid and sucked a small dose into the needle's tube. I noticed him squeeze the tool to check the liquid would leave the needle and sure enough it did. A tiny bit squirted and landed on Dr Weekes' head. Brendon's face turned red like a tomato and I chuckled to my self.
Then Brendon headed in my direction, so I quickly looked the other way so it looked as if I saw nothing. He sat down on his stool and tapped my lips gesturing for me to open up. Like usual, I obliged.
"You best close your eyes Lola, most people do for this part."
I gently closed my eye lids shut and felt my mouth being held open. The next thing I know I felt a slight pinching feeling in my lower gum but it was nothing too bad. Besides, I was no longer scared or worried. I then felt the liquid being inserted into my gums which made me feel funny, but I was a surviver. Soon enough the needle was removed from my mouth and no pain could be felt.
"Lola, you're doing such a great job! Keep this up and we'll be done in no time." His voice was so cheerful. I knew he was proud of me.
"Now it's time for the drill."
Drill? Oh no. That meant pain. I wasn't ready for this. Brendon fixed the drill together and led it in my direction.
"Open up Lola, you're so brave!"
For the first time ever, I refused. My mouth wouldn't open. Brendon repeated his words.
"Open up Lola" he repeated, still in his gentle tone of voice.
I shook my head 'no' and waited for a response. I was being childish and I knew it too.
"C'mon Lola. Please open up. We're almost done and you've been so brave so far. I promise I'll be as gentle as possible. Dr Weekes can hold your hand if you wish."
I looked over at Dr Weekes. He removed his right glove and put his hand out to mine. I clenched it tight and was ready for the drill.
"Don't squeeze it too tight, you might stop his blood circulation!" Brendon laughed. Dr Weekes also sniggered and soon enough my mouth was open ready for my teeth to be drilled.
The drill was very loud, but for the entire time Dr Weekes held my hand tight. I would have preferred it to Brendon's hand but that was the least of my worries right now. After a while all the instruments were removed from my mouth and my mouth was no longer as numb.
"Are we done now?" I pleaded to Brendon.
He removed his gloves and mask, then sat the chair back to its normal state.
"I would like to give your teeth a good cleaning Lola, but you've been through a lot today. We'll do it another time. Would that be okay?"
"Yes, okay thank you!" I smiled.
"No problem!" He replied with a great big smile. His teeth almost blinded me! "You don't mind coming back to the dentist do you?" He winked at me.
I laughed.
"Sure" I groaned in a sarcastic manner.
He helped my out of the chair, then asked Dr Weekes to book me another appointment in two days time.
Dr Weekes left the room very fast. Brendon handed me a small note with a mobile number scribbled down.
"Text me so I have your number. I'll call you after my shift at 5:00" he smiled.
I nodded and gave him a massive hug thanking him for everything.
He led me to the entrance and I was on my way, heart thumping like a cheetah.
