It took a long time before Charlie woke up with excruciating pain in her shoulder. She opened her eyes and surveyed the damage. Adam was right next to her and the guide on the other side. She began moving the snow particles slowly with her mind and it started working. While lying there she began with Adam and then the guide. She then gave Adam a small jolt of electricity to wake him. He got up with a gasp and coughed. She checked his body and saw that he was fine then moved on to the guide. He unfortunately did not make it. She called Adam to help her. Adam shook his head and went to her, inspecting her wound. Thank goodness the wound wasn’t too deep, she would be okay until they got back to the hotel and then to the airport.
Adam scanned for his bag and found it nearby, he went to it and looked for the medical supplies. Charlie had to admit that Adam was good at this, she already blocked her mind to the pain of the injury and while he was fixing her up she blocked that out too.
“Is there any chance you can get us out of here?”
“Yes just hold on.”
Charlie broke through the snow completely but it took the strength out of her as they finally broke free. She took a deep breath and carried them in the bubble to the beginning of the trail. Adam then hailed for further assistance and they were brought to the hotel and back to their room. A medical officer attended to Charlie and once she was done Adam thanked her and showed her out. He locked the door and placed a device to protect them from any entrance. He took out another device and scanned Charlie’s body and then he scanned his. He took the device and scanned their luggage and their bags.
Charlie spotted him and observed what he was doing. She spoke to him slowly in a gruff voice.
“What are you doing?”
“This little gadget detects if there’s a tracker on or in us or anywhere near us.”
At this point Charlie knew she had to come clean.
“I think he can see my dreams.”
Adam glanced back at her quickly.
“You haven’t controlled that part yet?”
She knew he would be mad at her for this, when he had last asked her about this she told him it was under control. When he had tested her before, she had given him an illusion that she had it under control. Adam’s cursing brought her back from her reverie. When he stared at her in disbelief she knew she was in great trouble with Adam. The kind of trouble that wasn’t going to be solved by sweet talk.
“I need a moment Charlie.”
Adam left the room and she didn’t blame him for being angry, it was the first time she had lied to him. She heard something breaking and didn’t flinch at that. She couldn’t get up at the moment with the meds she received so she just waited calmly until he surfaced back in the room.
“Adam…”
He pointed at her, his face showing exactly how upset he was at her. He articulated himself so calmly and quietly that she definitely felt scared.
“Don’t you dare say anything right now. You need to concentrate on blocking your mind properly unless you want this guy to know where we’re heading next.”
Adam tucked Charlie in and went to sit on the desk. Waiting until she fell asleep. He went to the kitchen and made himself some coffee. As he sat in the kitchen he tried to calm himself down but he was furious. He waited until he finished his coffee then began his tai chi exercises. They worked after a half an hour, he could think clearer and he was much calmer. He went to check on Charlie and found her crying. Adam jumped on the bed and cradled her tightly. He waited patiently as her crying and shaking had slowed. He clutched her even tighter then kissed her forehead.
“I am so sorry I lied Adam.”
“Why did you lie?”
Charlie wiped away a few tears streaming down her face.
“I felt like I had to say I did something right, I was getting everything wrong. Adam even with powers you beat me at every turn. I don’t know Adam, the pressure just got to me.”
Adam knew she had been struggling but he hadn’t known how much.
“Can I hold your hands?”
Charlie nodded, Adam took her hands and just let the memories flood him for a bit. He felt enormous guilt, she felt the pressure of having powers while still dealing with killing her godparents killer and finding out that they had killed her parents. She was drowning in heavy emotions and it was killing her not letting Adam know how much she felt like a failure, how much she had let him down.
“Oh Charlie my love, I am nothing but proud of you. You have taken on so much. Every single day you make me prouder, you are amazing.”
He turned her around and kissed her all over. He did it until she giggled at his actions.
“That smile, it makes me feel so good. You brighten up my day when you smile like that. No one knows when you‘ll get the knack of your powers but you are doing great. I apologize profusely for not telling you how immensely proud I am of you.”
“Adam I really am sorry for lying, that was awful.”
“I forgive you, always but Charlie we need to work on you blocking your mind while you’re sleeping. I put a shield up for tonight.”
She stared at him for a moment, he was truly beguiling and intriguing. She was a very lucky woman indeed.
“Okay.”
They stayed up all night talking till the early morning. Charlie insisted that Adam teach her how to master her mind. She convinced him that being tired made for a great teaching moment so they practiced until she was totally drained.
