Raven Winters. “I thought I was important to you, an important client but you’ve forgotten about that.” I turned when I heard the voice, I was standing at a small gathering with Alpha Stone and the person he was introducing me to. “It’s been a week and some days.” The moment I turned, I saw him, Kaid. He held a glass of wine in his hand and was rubbing his wrist. He held glasses on, and a white tailored suit. “You must’ve forgotten about me.” “I haven’t forgotten about you, Mr. Kaid.” “But you never get back to me.” “I sent you my proposal and the payment was going to be high, but it didn’t seem like you wanted that, did you? Then I offered to make you my wife, which you seem to have rejected as well.” “That’s not it,” I said and was about to take a step closer to him but a hand stopped me, and pulled me backwards, I looked over my shoulder and Alpha Stone was there. “You can see that we are having a private meeting.” He said to Kaid. He twirled his glass of wine before responding to Alpha Stone. “Unfortunately. I can’t see that, I only saw her standing alone.” He gestured his finger over to me. “We have some discussion.” “She’s with me.” Alpha Stone said defensively, Kaid’s gaze went from me and down to him. “You settled for him?” He looked surprised and I shook my head slightly, because I understood what he meant. “He’s my date for the night.” “Ain’t you a bit old for that? I should have brought you here as my wife, and you don’t have to play this game as him.” He frowned. “Do you think you are any better?” Alpha Stone asked, he was the one taking a step now. “I don’t think so. I am.” He dropped the glass of wine on a random usher inside the hall. I only got to realize that they knew each other, and they didn’t even try to hide it. “It’s a competitive world, Raven. And I’m sure you’re aware of that,” “I am,” I mumbled, staring at Kaid as he spoke, his gaze focused on me now. “I didn’t quite expect this from you, I waited for you, I wanted to get a response, but days went by, and your text never came.” “I needed some time to think.” I turned to Alpha Stone, touching his arm gently. “Give us a minute.” He didn’t look pleased when I said that, but he backed down anyway. I walked down to Kaid, held his hand, and pulled over from the stand, we walked slowly out of the hall. He wasn’t speaking, and I chose to remain quiet because I wanted to gather my thoughts on him. “The reason you pulled away, was it because I asked you to be my wife? Was that too extreme for you? I simply told you what I felt, I thought you could take that.” “I just got out of a marriage that didn’t end quite well, you didn’t expect me to jump right into another, I don’t want to make the same mistake that I did in my first marriage.” We stood on the balcony of the building and I reached out to hold the railing. “I heard you were married to Ethan and I was never curious why you chose to divorce him, though he hasn’t come out to say anything yet about it. He’s just a coward.” He leaned over at the railings just as I did, and close to me. “Then work with me.” “I was going to set up a meeting with you after the Gala, and I never forgot your offer, it was quite enticing.” He smiled softly, keeping his gaze on me. “You look gorgeous tonight,” “You flatter me.” “I don’t.” “You are very beautiful. Raven.” He looked away after holding my gaze for a minute. “Should I expect some good news from you after the Gala?” “You should.” “I don’t think I can wait another day, why don’t you tell me here?” He asked, and I rubbed a finger over my jawline and moved closer to him. He held a teasing smile on his face, as if daring me to take another step closer to him. “Just one more step.” His lips moved enough for me to hear, “I want you closer, Raven.” He didn’t break eye contact, I held them just as he did, watching him as I took another step closer to him. “Is this what you wanted to do, that’s why you sought divorce?” The voice I have known too well interrupted, I spun around and saw him behind us. “Raven, you think you played smart.” “Didn’t you?” He asked, and moved out from the dark, I didn’t know he had been at the balcony. He must’ve seen us when we walked onto the balcony. “What are you doing here?” I straightened up and his eyes wandered over my body, he scrunched his nose and shook his head. “Have you forgotten that I am Alpha?” “I have always been invited everywhere, but not someone like you, this was the reason for your divorce?” “Why don’t you stop being a coward and make an official statement that we are divorced. You like to make things a bit more difficult, don’t you, Ethan?” He chuckled at my words, “You don’t tell me what to do, Raven. I don’t take orders from you or anyone, I’m the one in charge, the one in control, and not you!” “Then we’ll meet in court.” “I want that to be the first and only time we will ever see each other again, Ethan.” This time, I could fight him off with Alpha Stone who had offered to help, and I will be able to take back my father’s land, and everything that I owned from him. I wouldn’t be losing against him this time. He rubbed his hands around his lips. Irritated. “You can’t wait for it, can you?” He scoffed. “So you can keep flirting with my cousin.” Cousin?
