Chapter 5 The streets were swollen with golden light by the time Brocc and Caulette arrived back home. The houses held the light like water, and lakes of it glinted every few feet. Brocc’s street was on a cobblestone row, and the house sat at a dead end. The house, a two-story broccoli, had four windows across the front and a large bay window on the ground floor. A gabled roof stuck out of the house’s green crown, shrouded by leaves. Dormer windows glowed against the waning daylight. A small garden of dill, thyme and lemongrass grew in front of the house, the familiar scents filling his nose. Just like his mom to leave all these herbs here until the last minute.
