Lucas POV
Werewolves have been around for as long as anyone can remember. Men turning into wolves can be found as far back as the first known Western prose The Epic of Gilgamesh, which has been dated as far back as 2600 BC.
In this tale Ishtar, the Goddess of fertility, love, war, and s*x falls in love with young Gilgamesh but is rejected by him because of her past treatment of her previous suitors. It is said that Ishtar encouraged the love of a young shepherd whom she later turned into a wolf once she grew bored of him. Thus marking the beginning of werewolves.
Understandably Gilgamesh would be wary of getting involved with the Goddess Ishtar. Especially when the poor shepherd was then devoured by his hounds after being turned into a wolf. Talk about a rough ending.
Many argue that this couldn’t possibly be the creation of werewolves because the shepherd didn’t live as a wolf long enough to create others like him. As well as there being no mention of the shepherd ever turning back into a human.
This logic doesn’t stop the Ishtarians from believing that their God, or in this case Goddess, is the creator of all werewolves and should be worshiped by all. Their obsession with their Goddess is what started the war between the three factions to begin with.
Countless lives lost because the Ishtarians couldn’t stand that others didn’t believe that their God was the only God. How…Human of them to think like that. And wolves believe themselves to be above humans. Lucas snorted. Not even close.
Then there are the Nords who believe that werewolves came about from wearing wolf pelts. Really, have you heard anything more ridiculous than that? Besides, wouldn’t that make us skinwalkers and not werewolves?
Anyways…
According to the Nords, a decendent of Odin named Sigmund and his incestuous son Sinfjotli came upon two men who were sleeping under a spell. Over each man hung a wolf skin that they were only able to shed every tenth day. When father and son put on the skins they were unable to get them back off. They then began to howl like wolves and ran into the forest where they killed many men.
When the two men began to quarrel Sigmund bit Sinfjotli in his windpipe which nearly cost him his life. They say that a Raven came from the sky that the Nords believe to have been Odin and gave Sigmund a leaf that contained magical healing powers. Sigmund applied this leaf to Sinfjotli’s wound and brought him back to full health.
Rumors state that the duo burned the wolf skins once they were finally able to remove them. The Nords have tried to squash these rumors in order to preserve their beliefs throughout the ages. But really, who other than them could believe such a ridiculous tale? Especially when their wolves are inside of them always and none of them have to shed a wolf skin every ten days.
Oh, and then there’s the fact that they don’t live their lives as wolves that turn human every ten days. They are one hundred percent human looking most of the time. Well, if you didn’t take into account that wolves are much smarter, stronger, faster, and all around better than humans. Aside from our love of conflict.
But we’re getting off topic.
Though this story is by far the most silly of them all (which is why the other two factions have never taken the Nords seriously) it doesn’t stop the Nords from believing that their God is the One True God of the wolves.
The factions disregarding the Nords was quite naive of them when war broke out because the Nords might have an outlandish story but they are still descendents of the Norsemen and Vikings and are a vicious clan. The Nords came quite close to killing us all before we were able to broker a peace amongst us.
Those were some good times for sure. Lucas smiled to himself as memories washed over him.
Man can those suckers drink! It’s always a good time when the Nords are around. We just don’t talk about Werewolf origin and everything is fine and dandy. And the drinks are plenty.
The last of the three factions are the Grecians. As I’m sure you can guess the Grecians are descendents of the Greeks and their beliefs center around Zeus. The Grecians tell a tale about a cruel king of Arcadia named Lycaon who attempted to trick Zeus into eating human flesh while serving him a meal.
Lycaon wanted to test Zeus’ omniscience so he served Zeus a meal made out of the roasted flesh of his youngest son Nyctimus. Lycaon foolishly did this in order to test if Zeus was truly all knowing or not. Turns out that he is, and as a punishment Zeus turned Lycaon and his sons, which he had many (50 to be exact), into werewolves.
Zeus then resurrected the sacrificed son Nyctimus who descended on to the throne once his father and brothers were chased out of Arcadia. There are stories that the descendents of Nyctimus became werewolf hunters and have hunted down and burned wolves throughout history in search of the descendents of Lycaon.
Each faction has many packs that span the entire world. Right now there is a tentative peace that could be easily broken by the tiniest quarrel. The Blood Moon pack didn’t worship any of the three Gods and didn’t really care how werewolves came about.
During the splitting of the factions long ago the Blood Moon pack decided to go their own way and refused to take sides with any of the factions. The closest pack to our borders is the Crescent Bolt pack to the south of us.
The Crescent Bolt pack worship Zeus and are the most fanatical when it comes to worshipping their God. They were all too eager to split from the other factions when war broke out. With the exception of the Blood Moon pack.
Over the years they have tried having peace summits with us but something always happens that messes them up. It’s almost as if someone is purposely trying to keep the two packs apart. Which works for us just fine. We don’t need any of that zealot God worship ruining the good thing we have going here.
Lucas had enough of everything involving Zeus when he was young and dumb and thought he was smarter than the Gods. ‘Zeus sure showed us, didn’t he Leo.’ Lucas said to his wolf who snorted in response.
This was why the Blood Moon pack chooses to live a solitary life within our expansive walls. Away from the chaos of the human world and the destruction of the wolf world. Because even though most wolves don’t know the truth about how werewolves came about, it doesn’t stop the three factions from brutally killing each other in the name of their Gods
