Help Me, Mate!
Jared's POV.
I sprinted out of the mansion without a second thought, my determination propelling me toward the hospital.
The pain in my back and my unhealed wounds were irrelevant; my sole focus was on my mate, who Lucian had revealed was at the hospital.
The revelation had struck me like a bolt of lightning, and I had been left reeling. But dwelling on that now served no purpose.
Worry consumed me, causing my hands to tremble as I ran, heedless of the desperate need for air in my lungs.
The pain in my chest was real, but it wasn't physical; it was the anguish of not knowing what had happened to Sarah.
"What have you done, Jared?" I questioned myself, the words echoing in my mind as I continued to sprint toward the hospital.
The distance was far, but I was determined to reach it without hesitation.
Reaching the hospital, I didn't spare a glance at the receptionist who greeted me. Instead, I rushed straight towards the doctor's office.
The receptionist began to say something behind me, but her words were cut short as she followed me and noticed my hurried determination.
Inside the doctor's office, I found it empty. When I turned back to the receptionist, she seemed frightened by my presence, her nervous giggle failing to hide her fear.
She was well aware of what I was capable of, and my current behaviour didn't leave her feeling at ease.
"Good day, Alpha," she stammered, trying to force a smile as she distanced herself from me. She knew better than to provoke me further.
"My Mate!?, where is she?!" I seized the nurse by both shoulders, my eyes drilling into hers as I demanded an immediate answer.
The nurse's body quivered uncontrollably, and her trembling lips hindered her from speaking clearly. Her visible fear only heightened my frustration.
"Tell me!" I barked impatiently. I hadn't come to the hospital to witness her trembling like a frightened animal; I was here to find my mate, who they claimed had been brought here by me.
Her lips still quivering, she extended a trembling hand, pointing toward her desk. I released her shoulders and impatiently paced around, waiting for her to give me the information I needed.
She hurried back to her desk, and I followed closely, observing as she worked on her computer.
"Room 28. Go straight, and then take a right turn," she stammered, but as soon as I comprehended her words, I dashed off as fast as my legs would carry me in the direction she indicated.
I stormed into the room with little regard for decorum, as if it were my pack house. Yet, what I encountered inside froze me to my core.
A heavy gulp, accompanied by beads of sweat forming on my brow, punctuated my realisation.
The sight before me was nightmarish, causing my heart to pound in my chest like a drumbeat.
My eyes widened, and I blinked repeatedly, desperately hoping that what I was witnessing was some cruel dream.
Unfortunately, reality confirmed its cruel presence.
It was my mate, there was no doubt about that. But if it was her, why were nurses and a doctor covering her with white linens? I had entrusted her to his care, specifically instructing him to protect her at all costs. Hadn't I made myself clear? Then why was she now wrapped in white fabric?
"Doctor?" I moved toward him with a frantic energy, gripping his coat as I forcefully pinned him against the wall.
My eyes blazed with anger, my chest heaving with the rhythm of my frantic heartbeat.
Fear gnawed at my heart, and even though my mind was screaming the truth at me, I stubbornly refused to heed its warnings.
"Alpha, you have to..." the doctor began to say.
"Don't tell me to calm down. Explain to me what's happening!" I roared, causing the nurses to cringe in fear, even though they weren't the ones I was addressing.
The doctor visibly swallowed, sweat trickling down his forehead as he tried to avert his gaze. He trembled, his lips quivering as he attempted to find the words.
"Say something!" I yelled impatiently, my eyes locked onto his.
"As you can see, Alpha, she's dead."
Silence fell like a heavy shroud, and my gaze shifted to the lifeless body surrounded by the nurses.
I stepped away from the doctor, recognizing that he was simply doing his job.
Yet, his words pierced my heart like a dagger, and an agonising pain surged through me at the confirmation of her death.
"f**k it!" I cursed inwardly, clenching my fists. I knew I didn't have any romantic feelings for her, so why did I feel this piercing pain whenever something happened to her?
I struggled to keep myself composed, attempting to process everything the doctors had just revealed.
They offered me a brief chance to see the body, uncovering her face so I could have one last look at Sarah.
Her eyes were closed as if she were peacefully sleeping, but this was no ordinary slumber.
Her pallid complexion hinted at the blood she had lost, and even though I couldn't bring myself to touch her, I could tell that her body had grown as cold as ice.
The doctor and nurses allowed me a moment to say my goodbyes before they covered her face, signalling that it was time to take her away.
I stepped back to give them space to perform their duties. My heart thundered loudly in my chest, and for the first time, tears welled up in my eyes.
I had been so fixated on my resentment for this girl that I hadn't stopped to consider for a moment what she had to go through just to please her father because of me.
It was obvious she was forced into being with me and I shouldn't have treated her the way I did... but it was for the best, right?
"She's gone!" The voice in my head screamed, while my lips tightened with anger. The expression on my face reflected an uproar of emotions.
I hated the way I felt at that moment, and at the same time, I loathed how everything had turned out within these few days or hours.
"We're taking her away now," the doctor's announcement broke my trance, and I watched as they wheeled her lifeless body out of my sight.
As they removed her from my view, a soft, plaintive voice suddenly whispered gently, piercing into my ears.
"Help me, mate."
