Damon's Point of View
I wake up slowly, stretching as I let out a yawn.
I feel great. I can't remember the last time I slept this well.
I think to myself when, suddenly, images from last night begin to flash through my head, and I remember the reason why I did.
My mate...
My eyes snap open immediately, and I glance around the room, but it is quiet, and I realize that I am alone.
Her scent still hangs in the room, but it is faint and the side of the bed she was sleeping on is cold.
She is long gone.
Good. That makes everything easier. It is better this way.
I tell myself. My wolf growls at that and I frown, slightly annoyed.
She is human. Even if I did want another mate, which I don't, you know a human would never work in our world.
I say firmly and he stays quiet.
I sigh and grab my phone from the night stand, glancing at the time.
07:15 am.
Levi will be here soon.
I quickly get out of bed and make my way over to the bathroom to take a quick shower.
Her scent is all over me, and I have to shake my head to stop my mind from drifting to her.
I scrub myself hard, trying to erase everything that reminds me of her.
I have just finished pulling on my pants when there is a knock on my door and I glance at my phone again.
07:30 am.
That would be my beta.
"Come in!"
I call out, taking the towel and quickly drying my hair.
Levi opens the door. He opens his mouth to speak, but he stops, his nose twitching and then his eyes widen slightly before he grins widely at me.
"Well, well, well... This is interesting. The draught has finally ended."
He murmurs, his eyes scanning around the room, looking for someone other than me.
"Where is she? I have to see the woman that finally convinced you to get into bed with her."
He says teasingly and I frown at him.
"She left before I even woke up."
I say flatly, pulling my shirt on over my head and his eyes widen again.
"Wait, what? Are you serious?"
He asks a bit surprised and I nod my head without a word as I begin to pack my things.
He frowns at me, and watches me for a few seconds before he speaks again.
"So, let me get this straight... This is the first woman you have brought to your bed in years, and she just left before you woke up? And you didn't even realize it?"
I stop packing and frown at him.
"Let it go, Levi. She was human. It is better this way for everyone."
I say, and his frown deepens, his confusion clear. He opens his mouth to speak, but shuts it again, and I see the minute realization strikes him and he whistles.
"Shit... You found your fated mate, didn't you?"
He asks, running his fingers through his hair.
I frown at him again.
"I already had a mate."
I say flatly and he sighs,
"I know you and Emma loved each other, but she was your chosen mate, Damon... not that they are any less than fated mates, but being with your fated..."
He begins but I cut him off.
"I said to drop it, Levi."
I say sharply. He frowns at me, folding his arms in front of his chest.
"So you are really okay with just letting her go and never seeing her again?"
He asks, and I can hear the disapproval in his voice.
"I told you, she was human, and I already had my mate. I don't want another. Especially not a little human."
"Damon..."
He tries again but I glare at him.
"I won't repeat myself again, Levi, let it go. We won't speak of this again."
I say coldly, my voice firm and I slip a little of my aura into my words.
Levi flinches slightly before he clenches his jaw and he gives a curt nod.
"Yes, Alpha. I'll just go check us out then and bring the car around so we can leave."
He mutters stiffly before he turns and leaves my room without waiting for a reply.
I let out a shaky breath as soon as the door closes behind him.
I continue to pack my things. Just as I zip up my laptop bag, something under the bed catches my attention. I frown and bend down to pick it up. My breath catches and I feel myself twitch when I realize that is her panties.
I swallow hard as I straighten, with them still in my hands.
Mate...
My wolf growls, and I frown, shaking my head.
Stop. You know that this is for the best.
I say firmly and he growls again.
You will regret this.
No, I won't. I am not doing this. You know what happened to Emma, and she was an Alpha's daughter. What chance would that little human have?
I ask him flatly and that shuts him up. He whimpers softly before he pulls back and shuts off the link between us.
Her face flashes in front of my eyes, her smile, her scent, her touch, memories from last night flooding my mind.
I close my eyes and shake my head.
Stop. Nothing good can come of this... This is what is best for everyone involved.
I tell myself.
There is another knock on the door, and I quickly stuff the panties into my bag's side pocket.
"Come in."
I say quickly and one of my warriors, George, opens the door.
"Alpha, the beta sent me. Everyone is ready to leave."
He says, and I nod my head as I grab my bags.
"Good. Thank you, George."
I look up at him.
"Let's go."
I say, walking out of the room without glancing back.
It was just one night. And after today, I won't give her another thought.
I tell myself firmly as make my way outside and slide into the driver seat of my SVU.
This is what is best.
