"How did it go ?" I asked once they were back home.
"Not bad. We talked to him and he'll more than gladly let us meet her tomorrow"
"Alright that's good. Now you never told me, what's her story anyway? The one you are looking for?"
"So far we don't know much. Don't worry about it yet. If something happens and you need to know about it then you will" Father explained.
There he goes again with his ‘don’t worry about it’. If I had a dollar… no if I had a cent for every time he told me not to worry about it, I would have been a billionaire on my own by now.
"Oh also we met one of your friends!" Mom said excited, but anyone in the room would see that she was just trying to change the topic before I start arguing with him about not getting to know stuff before he wants me to.
"Oh yeah, who did you see ?" I said grabbing myself a glass of water, knowing it's probably for the best that she changed the topic.
Whenever me and dad have those arguments they never get us anywhere. He doesn't want me near the business unless it's absolutely necessary, neither does mom. I don't understand however why I'm not allowed more control in the legalized property ? I could bring so much and help, yet he doesn't want me involved in any of it unless it's an emergency.
"Ella. She's lovely"
I choked on my water almost spitting it out once realizing what she said.
"Ella ?"
"Jeez, are you okay ?" Mom asked as I cleared my throat.
"Yeah.. went down the wrong pipe"
"She's so lovely" she added as I attempted to not look either of them in the eyes. I knew I would have my cover blown the second I do.
"She's new" I reply.
Before much more conversation could take place, my phone rang.
"What's up?"
"Yoo, come down. We are out for a drive" Keven spoke.
“Nik” Mom said, making me turn around.
“You should invite her over for the Christmas dinner”
“I was planning on it” I say before heading out, not even wanting to see their reactions. The Christmas dinners are a tradition that go way back, when we were little we always saw the fancy Christmas dinner ours parents would throw, and we wanted to do one of our own. That’s why every single year, me, Keven, Kayla, Haiden, and Andrea have a night at the house alone were we celebrate Christmas and don’t worry about anything for a day. For some strange reason, something in my head told me that I wanted her there with us. At the same time I did not. This is for family.. she is a stranger if you think about it..
I really could use this escape right about now.. or so I thought. For some dumb reason I did not imagine that she would be with them. Yet there she was. She was however sitting in the passenger seat and Keven sat back for the first time.
Such a gentleman...
"Move" I said since he was laying on the seats.
"Shut up and pretend I'm Ella. I'm tried" he complained.
"Why did you come then?"
"Cause Kayla forced me out of the house"
"And why am I here?"
"Because I will blow this car up if I hear another word about Theo Smith and I figured you're the only one who could save me"
"Can y'all shut up and play a fuckin song ?" Kayla yelled.
We eventually made a stop near the beach, it was getting late and the sun was setting down. Ella was standing on the side and staring into the dark waters.
"So you met my parents huh ?"
She laughed a little laugh but did not remove her eyes from the view.
"Yes I did indeed. They are lovely"
This time I couldn't help but be the one to laugh a little.. oh if only you knew.
"Yo Ella!" I heard Keven come from behind us. For f**k sake.
"What's up?" She asked.
"Kayla needs help in the car" He said before she started walking towards the car and he replaced her.
"Nice view huh ?" He said.
"It was better when you weren't here"
"Damn dog, someone mad cause I took their girl ?"
"She's not my girl"
"Well she isn't mine either. Besides, I like blondes"
"Does she know that though ?"
"What ?"
"Does she know that you like blondes ?"
"I am ninety nine percent positive that she does. Otherwise her calling me brother would be kind of strange... Andrea however, I'm not sure" he spoke just before turning around and walking away.
"Wait what..? KEVEN" I yelled but he was already running to the car.
Fucking bastard...
Maybe dad has a point sometime, maybe I am too impulsive. How does he expect me to learn and grow if he doesn’t gave me a chance though… ?
On the ride back Keven made sure to sit in the front beside Kayla forcing Ella to sit in the back with me. After a few moments of driving her head was resting on my shoulder.
“Are you alright ?” I asked.
Come to think of it, she was looking a bit pale.
“I have been trying to get her to talk ever since I picked her up, but no answer” Kayla explained.
“If I told you guys something, do you promise me not to start treating me any differently ?” She asked hesitant.
“Are you stupid ? Of course we will not” I reassured her, slightly giving her a little nudge as Kayla pulled over and turned around to look at Ella.
“Alright, so you guys know that we moved out here recently. You have met my sister and all that, but you haven’t met anymore of my family. That’s because Liz is the family I have left. Our parents got killed in a home robbery and we moved out here for a fresh start. I did not want to be that girl who people pitied and become friends with her for just that. I wanted friends who actually loved me”
Kayla got out of the car and opened Ella’s door for her.
“Get your ass out”
To my surprise, she did just that and the bigger surprise was how tightly Kayla hugged her.
“I always wanted a sister” Kayla said making Ella’s sobs grow louder.
Keven got out of the car too and I followed.
“I for one do not want another sister, you are alright though” he joked, hugging her making her laugh.
“I could use a stepsister” I joked hugging her too, and damn it felt good to see her laugh. She looked so tired and pale.
“Has Liz been giving you any trouble?” I asked with my arm still around her.
“Yeah, she has been waking up during the nights because of nightmares. It already takes me hours to put her to sleep as it is”
“Who is with her now ?” Kayla asked.
“I hired a babysitter. We thought it would be good for her to see someone else apart from me at the house”
“Well then, did I just hear sleep over at Ella’s tomorrow ?” Keven asked, looking at her and raising a brow.
“I think you heard just right” She smiled before we got into the car again, but this time the silence was replaced was music that everyone sang to.
