Nicole's Pov
Abby drives us to the beach where the bonfire will be. As we get closer the parking area is already full of cars. We drive around for a bit to find a parking space.
"If these cars are any indication, this is going to be a party to remember." Abby says excitedly.
Abby and I get out of the car and start walking down the beach to where the wood for the bonfire is already stacked. We reach the beach just as they light up the bonfire.
"I love bonfires, actually. I love any good party." Abby says, clapping her hands together.
Chuckling, "Yes, I know. Sometimes I wonder how we became best friends."
"Ooh you love me, besides we balance each other out. You inspire me to do better and be a better person and I help you get out of your shell and just relax. Now let's go get something to drink."
Abby and I walk over to the table with all the drinks.
"What do you feel like drinking, Nic?"
"What are my options?" I ask, scanning over the contents on the table.
"They have beer, cocktail mixes, shots and soda."
"I will get a cocktail mix please."
"Okay, but first do a shot with me." Abby says while handing me a shot glass.
I look skeptically at the odd colored liquid in the shot glass but take it anyway. Abby and I both take our shots at the same time. As soon as I swallow it, I start coughing and stare at Abby.
"God, Abby what the hell was that?" I ask, still trying to catch my breath.
"I have no idea, it said Party mix." Abby says, shrugging and looking at me like it was nothing.
"Great, so you just made us drink something that you did not even know what was inside. I swear someday you are going to get me killed. Let's just get our drinks and go before you give me alcohol poisoning." I joke and hook my arm through Abby's to pull her away from the table before she gets any more ideas.
With our drinks in our hands, we start looking for some of our friends. Maddy spots us and waves us over to the group of friends. Abby and I walk over to their group. As soon as we reach the group of people, Maddy starts asking me questions about my first day at the hospital.
"So how was your first day? Dit you save anyone's life? Or maybe meet someone with an interesting disease?" Maddy looks at me expectantly.
I take a sip from my cocktail before answering. "Well, to be honest, I do not think I am off to a great start. As luck would have it, I was barely on time for work. Now my attending doctor hates me and I got stuck with paper work and discharging patients. So no life saving or anything interesting for that matter." I answer with the short version of the day's events.
Abby starts laughing. "Don't leave out the juicy part. What about God's gift to woman?" Abby mocks me and nudges me with the elbow.
"Now this I have got to hear." Maddy says excitedly.
I shake my head at Abby and then continues to tell Maddy about the stranger. "Abby is exaggerating. There was this very attractive man that came to the hospital. He walked in like he owned the place and just before he entered the VIP wing he stopped and looked straight at me and then just walked away." I shrug and continue drinking my cocktail.
"And you have no idea who it was? How exciting your very own attractive stranger."
Luckily for me, that's the end of the conversation and everyone starts up new conversations. The next moment, a woman appears out of nowhere and gives Abby a hug.
"Hi stranger, I haven't seen you in a long time. You're too good to come back to your hometown and visit us nowadays."
Abby playfully shoves the woman and says. "Don't be so dramatic, Lucy I visited Aiden two weeks ago. It is not my fault you were not there."
" It is a pity we missed each other. The rest of the gang is here too if you feel like saying Hi." Lucy gestures towards a group of people a few yards away.
"Yeah, for sure, I would love to catch up with you guys. I will come find you later." Abby says before Lucy walks back to her group of friends.
Abby's phone starts ringing. She takes the phone out of het pocket and lifts is to her ear.
"Hello Brother, how can I be of assistance today? Yes, we are at the bonfire. We are to the right of the fire next to those big rocks." She starts looking around to see if she can spot her brother. When she sees Aiden, she starts to wave so he can see her. Once he sees her, she ends the call and waits for Aiden to come to her. A few moments later Aiden walks up to our group and hugs Abby and me.
"It is nice to see you again Aiden how have you been?" I ask when he lets me go.
"I am good, just a little stressed out about work. So I am hoping toning will help me relax."
"That is why your sister dragged me out here too, because she says I need to relax after my first day of paperwork."
Aiden arches an eyebrow and looks at me. "I forgot today was your first day. What do you mean by the first day of paperwork?"
"Well, I slept through my alarm, so I was barely on time and then my attending doctor stuck me with doing paperwork the entire day." I shortly explain.
"That sucks, but look at the bright side, at least it can't get any worse."
"Hey Aiden did you find your sister? I went ahead and grabbed us two beers." A man says as he walks up to our group.
He stops next to Aiden and hands him his beer, then he greets Abby and his eyes land on me. We stare at each other for a moment, before Aiden breaks the silence.
"O s**t yeah, you two have not met. This is Nicole, my sister's best friend and roommate, and this is Drake, my best friend, and we also work together." Aiden introduces the man to me.
Drake's gaze wanders over me from head to toe. "You're a doctor." He states plainly.
"Yes I am." I answer, a little shocked.
"Wait, you two know each other?" Abby asks, surprised, looking between me and Drake.
Drake finally looks away from me and looks at Abby. "Not really. I went to the hospital to visit a friend and I saw her there."
Abby starts laughing uncontrollably. "Oh my God, Drake is the attractive stranger."
I instantly go red and look at my best friend who is still laughing. I really wish the earth would just swallow me whole right now. I think to myself.
Drake c***s his head and arches his eyebrows. "I am what now?" He asks, amused.
I blush and can't get myself to look at Drake when I answer. "Long story short, I saw you at the hospital too and told Abby about it."
"Yes, but I heard the word attractive." Drake mocks while looking at me, squirming under the attention.
I did not even know it was possible to blush that much, but I am sure I am bright red, because my face feels like it is on fire.
Luckily, Aiden breaks the silence by cracking a joke.
"Great, just what we needed to boost Drake's ego even more. One of these days his head will explode." Aiden jokes and lightens the mood.
"Now that the introductions are done, let's have some fun." Abby says, dragging me back to the table with the drinks.
"What is wrong with you? I can't believe you just did that."
"Ooh it wasn't that bad, besides it is just Drake."
"Of course you think this is funny."
We get new drinks and walk back to Drake and Aiden.
" How long have you been a doctor?" Drake asks me.
"Today was actually my first day of residency. Not to be blunt, but is your friend going to be okay? I saw when they brought him into the hospital, he lost a lot of blood."
"O yes, Vincent is going to be fine. It looked a lot worse. His injuries are not that serious."
"I am glad to hear your friend is going to be okay."
Abby changes the subject to a lighter mood when she starts telling a story about something that happened at work. I keep steeling glances at Drake, and sometimes I catch him staring at me too. For the rest of the night we talk and drink. This bonfire is exactly what I needed to get out of my own head, I think to myself.
