Chapter 5

Nicole's Pov I start to stir in my bed. I wake up and think back to last night's bonfire. I instantly start to smile when I think back to Drake. Last night was exactly what I needed. I turn and look at my clock. There is still an hour and a half before my shift starts. I decide to get out of bed and go to work early. I go to the bathroom to take a shower and get dressed in my scrubs. I arrive at the hospital an hour before my shift starts. I start searching for Monique to see if I can't help her with patient discharges or even some paperwork. I find Monique in the doctor's lounge getting some coffee. "Good Morning how are you today?" I ask Monique as I get a cup of coffee for myself. "Good Morning, I am doing great thanks for asking." Monique looks down at her watch on her arm and looks back at me with a big smile. "An hour before your shift starts I am impressed and Dr. Owens will notice it too." "I believe I will be a great doctor I just need the opportunity to show Dr. Owens what I can do. Besides, I like being at the hospital around the patients. I still don't know how I slept through my alarm the first day, but it will never happen again." I say and take a sip of my coffee. We start walking out of the doctor's lounge back into the ER bay. I look at Monique and ask. "Do you need any help with discharging patients or anything else I can help with?" Monique looks around at all the paperwork, then back at me. "We don't have patients to discharge yet, but I have some paperwork to catch up on. If you want to, you can start updating the patients' charts by checking their vitals." "Sure I will get started on that." I say taking a tablet from Monique and making my way to the first patient. I walk into the room where a very excited young boy jumps up in bed and shows me the cast on his arm. "I got this cool cast yesterday because I fell off my bike and broke my arm. I can't wait to get back to school and show all my friends, they are going to think it is so cool." The boy excitedly tells me why he has a cast. "Well you are taking this extremely well. Most kids would cry because they got hurt, but you seem really excited by your cast." I say smiling at the boy. The boy looks down at his bed and says. "I did cry when I fell of my bike." The boy looks back up at me. "But that is only because it hurts really badly. The pain is gone now. I can't wait to show all my friends my cast." The boy adds excitedly. "Breaking a bone does really hurt, yeah, but I think you are very brave. You should ask your friends to write a message or draw a picture on your cast to make it even cooler." I say to the boy as I updates the last of the information on his chart. "Wow that sounds awesome, now I really want to get out of here. When can I leave? My mommy just went to the bathroom can we go home when she gets back?" The boy asks me. "I am sure you can't wait to get out of the hospital, but you have to wait for your doctor to check and make sure everything is fine before you can go home." I explain to the boy. "Okay I will wait thank you." The boy says sitting back down on his bed. I start to leave the room to go to the next patient when the boy speaks up again. "Wait will you come say goodbye to me before I leave and maybe draw something on my cast?" The boy asks while looking down and fiddling with the blanket on the bed. I smile at the boy as I answer. "Of course it would be my honor to be the first person to draw on your cast." The boy looks up and gives me the biggest smile before I leave the room. I have just finished updating the sixth patient's chart when I almost bump into Dr. Owens on my way out. "Sorry doctor, I did not mean to walk into you." I immediately apologize. "Miss Nash I am glad to see you here bright and early. What are you doing?" Dr. Owens asks me and looks at the tablet in my hand. "I am updating the patients' charts, so everything is up to date before the next shift starts." I explain. "I am glad to see you are pulling your weight. Finish updating all the patients' charts and then come find me. You will be working with me today." Dr. Owens says and walks away from me. "See I told you, you would be fine as long as you did your job and by being early today you are already winning him over." Monique who seems to have appeared out of nowhere, says to me. "Yes, now I just have to move and update all the charts, so I don't keep him waiting." I say rushing off to the next room. I finish updating all the patients' patient charts and now I have to look for Doctor Owens. I hand the tablet back to Monique and thank her. I walk off to the doctor's lounge to find Doctor Owens. When I reach the lounge, Doctor Owens is talking to another doctor who I have seen going into the VIP wing. As soon as I enter the lounge, they stop their conversation and the other doctor greets me and walks back to the VIP wing. Dr. Owens turns to me. "Are all the patiens charts up to date now?" "Yes I just checked on the last patient and handed the tablet back to Monique." "Follow me we are going to go around and check on my patients from yesterday and see who can be discharged today." Dr. Owens says as he walks out of the lounge. To my surprise, the first patient we go to is the boy with the cast on his arm. When we walk in the boy jumps out of bed again and taps his mom's arm. The boy points at me and says to his mom. "This is the nice doctor from this morning who said she would draw on my cast." The boy says excitedly. "I see someone is feeling better and is eager to get out of here." Dr. Owens says looking at the boy. Doctor Owens asks the boy a few more questions and then looks at the mother. "Everything here seems to be in order he can go home today. I will have a nurse come by with his discharge paperwork." "Thank you doctor" The boy looks at his mother. "So I can go home today?" "Yes sweetie, as soon as mommy signs some paperwork we can go home." The boy looks at me. "Will you still draw something on my cast?" Dr. Owens shakes his head, chuckles and hands me a marker. "You can draw him something cool to show his friends, while I arrange with Monique to get his discharge papers in order." I take the marker and start drawing a paw print on the boys' cast. The boy looks down at his cast and exclaims. "This is so cool, thank you. My friends will be so jealous." "It is my pleasure, now be careful when riding your bike." I say to the boy before walking out. As soon as I walk out, Doctor Owens rushes towards me. "There has been an accident. There are five patients on their way to us." We both rush to the door and wait for the patients to arrive.
