Chapter 7

Nicole's Pov I am waiting for the patients to arrive from the car crash with Dr. Owens when suddenly two men covered in blood are rushed through the door. Followed by Drake and another man I don't focus to much on Drake's presence and follow Dr. Owens to the patient. I immediately inspect his injuries and try to get the bleeding under control. We wheel the man into the first available room to try and save him. Dr. Owen and I connect the monitors on him and try to stop his bleeding, but no matter what we do the blood does not stop. Dr. Owens turns to one of the nurses. "Inject him with another round of TXA and hang another unit of blood. We have to get his blood to clot he has already lost too much blood." I put another tourniquet on his leg and pack the wound with gauze but, the gauze immediately soaks with blood. The next moment the machine goes of and the patient flat lines. "We need a crash cart!" Dr. Owens yells. "Nicole start CPR." I start CPR until I hear Dr. Owens say clear. Dr. Owens shocks the patient but still nothing. I start with CPR again. Dr. Owens says clear and shocks the patient again. Still nothing, I get on the bed and continue CPR. After a while Dr. Owens touches my arm to get my attention, I look up at him. "He is gone Nicole, he has been without a heartbeat for over thirty minutes." Dr. Owens says. I get of the bed and look at the patient and then back at Dr. Owens. He looks up at the clock and calls the time of death. "We have to go tell them. I will do all the talking, but I think you should come with me to see how I do it." Dr. Owens says and walks out of the room towards the waiting room. I take off my gloves and throw them in the bin before I follow him out into the waiting room. I stay a few feet behind him and look at the floor. I hear him saying that the man did not make it and that he had lost too much blood and that there was nothing we could do. I hear footsteps approaching me but I don't look up until I hear Drake speak to me. "Are you alright?" I look up to see him looking at me with a very worried expression. A little shocked that he is concerned about me I answer. "Yes, this is just my first patient that I could not save." "I am sure you did everything you could. You won't be able to save everyone that comes through that door." I look up at him and see the worry in his eyes and feel bad, because he is the one who lost a friend and say. "I should be the one comforting you, you knew him." He tilts his head and says. "Not really, he is more a friend of a friend." I look over to see Dr. Owens gesturing for me to follow him. I look back at Drake and say. "Sorry I have to go." And follow Dr. Owens out and into the doctors lounge. He turns around and looks me over. "This is your first patient that you have lost. So take a moment for yourself. Wash your face, get a clean coat and go for a walk to get some fresh air and then you come back." "Are you sure you don't need me to help with anything?" I ask him half shocked at his orders. "Yes I am sure. Losing a patient is a big deal especially the first one. So take a moment for yourself and process it and come back with a clear mind." "Thank you doctor." I say and walk to the changing rooms to get a clean coat and wash my face as Dr. Owens sugested. I take my phone and my wallet from my locker and take them with me. When I unlock my phone I see that I have a message from a number that I do not recognize, so I look at the message and it reads. "Hi, this is Drake. I hope you don't mind but I got your number from Aiden who got it from Abby. I really enjoyed meeting you yesterday, I was hoping you would go to the beach party with me on Friday." I smile to myself and save the number on my phone and text him back. "I really enjoyed meeting you too and I would like to see you again under better circumstances. I would like to go to the beach party with you on Friday." I put my phone in my pocket and walk over to the coffee shop across the street. I could really use a caramel iced coffee right now. I order my iced coffee and sit down while I wait for my coffee. After a few minutes, the waitress walks over with my coffee. I thank her, take my coffee and head back to the hospital. When I walk into the hospital, something runs into me and I look down to see the boy with the cast hugging my legs. He looks up at me and says. "Thank you for my paw print, it is so cool. I am going home now, goodbye." I smile down at him and say."I is my pleasure buddy. Now remember to be careful when riding your bike, goodbye." He lets go of my legs and walks back to his mother. I instantly feel better after the encounter with the boy. I walk back to the changing room to put away my phone and wallet. Then I go to find doctor Owens again so we can continue with our shift. I find him in the nurse's bay talking to Monique. He looks up at me as I approach them. "Are you ready to get back to work?" I give him a small smile and nod my head. "Yes I am ready, thank you." He looks back down at the tablet in his hand. "We have a patient in room five with abdominal pain let's go see how we can help." I follow him to room five. He walks over to the woman and says. "Hello, I am doctor Owens and is resident doctor Nash.I understand you have some abdominal pain." Doctor Owens asks the patient more questions so we know what tests to run. Then he looks back at the patient and says. "That's all for now, thank you. I am going to order the tests for you and then I will be back as soon as we get the results." I follow him out of the room and then he turns to me and asks me what tests I think we should run and what I think is wrong with her. I answer his questions and he agrees with all of my answers, so I put in the orders for the necessary tests that we decided on. We see a few more patients with different problems and I order some tests for them too. By the end of the shift, doctor Owens and I work like a well oiled machine. He asks the questions, I take the notes and then we compare what we think needs to be done. Luckily, nothing big or exciting happens for the rest of the shift. After my shift is over I run into doctor Owens on my way out. He looks at me and says. " You did a good job today. Keep up the good work and don't forget to be on time." "Thank you doctor. It was great working with you today, I learned alot." I walk out to my car and drive home. Now I know what true exhaustion feels like. I am going to take a shower and sleep for two days.
