CHAPTER 8

Tracing Shadows Tahimik ang café that afternoon. May laptop, earphones, at dalawang empty cups of iced americano. Aviya placed a fresh cup beside her. “Coffee. “Magpapahinga ako pag tapos na ‘to,” she answered with a small smirk. All connected by one silent thread: walang nakitang katawan. Laging "na-kidnap lang" ang report, then cold case. Pero may napansin si Loren. “Look at this,” aniya, pinaharap ang laptop kay Aviya. Parehong pattern. Parehong timeline. Parehong last location: Isang clinic na under a private medical foundation. Black Lotus territory. Hindi pa nila kaya dumiretso. Walang sapat na ebidensya. Walang pangalan. Pero may ruta. “May transport route sila from Batangas port to Manila docks. From there... underground transfers. Wala nang record.” Sabi ni Loren habang nag-zoom in sa mapa. “So kailangan natin maputol ang chain,” sagot ni Aviya. Calm. Calculating. Hindi ito simpleng mission. Hindi ito isang headshot, isang tapos. This is infiltration. Patience. Exposure. At doon pumapasok ang bagong cover nila. Anthony rushed in, slightly out of breath pero cheerful as always. “Ladies! Guess who just got city business permits approved?” Nagkatinginan si Aviya at Loren. “Legit na?” tanong ni Aviya. Anthony grinned, holding up the documents like trophies. “Olive Ash Café ay may kapatid na. Tonight, sisimulan natin ang preparation for grand soft opening ng…” He paused for dramatic effect. Loren rolled her eyes. “Sabihin mo na.” “THE VELVET SHADOW.” He made jazz hands. The name hit the room with weight. Hindi siya cute. Hindi siya trendy. It was a signal. A lure for the underground. Aviya leaned back. “Perfect cover. Loud crowd. Nightlife. Mas madaling pumasok ang intel.” “Exactly,” dagdag ni Loren. “Syndicates love shadows. We just have to make sure ours looks welcoming.” --- THE PENTHOUSE — NIGHT Pag-uwi ng dalawa, automatic nilang tinanggal ang shoes near the door. Routine. Discipline. Pareho silang may sariling kwarto. This room held tactical gear. Hidden servers. Secure radio. Weapons case. Loren opened the biometric lock. The room lit up in soft white. Sa gitna: A digital wall map showing the city with red markers. Routes. Patterns. Timelines. Aviya placed her coat sa backchair. “Hindi pa,” sagot ni Aviya, tying her hair up. “I need to watch something first.” She opened another file. The profile of Soren D’Angelo. “Governor by day. Mafia prince by blood. And target.” Pero hindi niya ito binigkas aloud. Loren saw her expression. “So... ano plano mo kay Governor Model Prince Boy?” Aviya remained expressionless. “Observe. Maintain distance.” Loren raised a brow. “You’re lying.” Aviya didn’t respond. Just stared at the map. Focus. Control. --- SCENE CUT TO: Soren’s Mansion — SAME NIGHT Soren stood sa balcony, glass of red wine sa kamay, eyes quietly scanning the city lights. For the first time in a long while, hindi niya kayang kalimutan ang mukha ng babae sa café. Simple. Tahimik. Walang effort. Pero she didn’t look at him like he was someone important. And that was new. Clean. Very clean.” Too clean. Soren smirked. “That’s what bothers me.” --- BACK TO AVIYA & LOREN Loren: “So tomorrow, construction inspection ng club. I’ll handle the interior security layout. Ikaw—” Aviya: “I’ll oversee the permits and paper trail. Anthony handles the public.” Loren leaned back, finally resting. “Velvet Shadow. A home for sinners and saints. You know, poetic.” Aviya smirked slightly. “Yeah. Some are hunting monsters.” Silence. But not heavy. Just understanding. The Velvet Shadow was alive. People laughed, glasses clinked, music pulsed like a second heartbeat. Loren sat in front of three monitors she secretly installed. Her fingers moved fast, tracing encryption lines, CCTV access points, movement logs. Aviya leaned on the glass railing, looking down at the crowd. Cold eyes, steady stance. Tahimik. Alert. Always calculating. “May nakita ka?” tanong niya, hindi lumilingon. Loren exhaled. Ito yung first thread natin.” Aviya’s jaw tightened. “Good. Anthony looked between them. “Are we really doing this... dito?
