Love for Teaching
Lia Shaw
“I am highly disappointed with the outcome of the impromptu test of the last class," she said, standing before the large hall filled with students
“I know most of our activity has been more practical, but the failures were uncalled-for" she exhaled
“Just like there are failures, there are also passes. A few people impressed me immensely and for our next project they will head and co-head the different groups" she added.
“Let's begin our topic for the day”
Lia taught for minutes with the aid of a laptop and a projector. The class paid attention and took down notes. They laughed once in a while as Lia would throw in a few jokes here and there to make the class lively and more enjoyable.
After she taught for an hour and thirty minutes, she moved over to the project. “The project topics and the different groups have been pasted on the notice board. Find your name, study your topics, work with the heads and give me fantastic work by the end of the week. Don't forget the prize. Before I leave, I would like to commend one person for his outstanding work on the test. Alex Stone, wonderful job"
Lia smiled at him as he was seated in the front row of the class before stepping out of the class to her office. She took a seat and grabbed some papers to cross-check for the last assignment.
Knock! Knock!
“Come in," she said softly, reading through an assignment
“Girllllllll”
Lia raised her head to look at the person who just walked in. Maria Hobbins, her best friend for ten years. Maria was the loud type compared to Lia who was more of a calm and collected person.
“Tell me it's not true," Maria said, taking a seat before Lia
“What?” Lia asked, acting oblivious to what her friend was asking.
“Your marriage”
“It is”
“Sis!” Maria called in surprise, “Why? You haven't met that guy"
“I love him, Ria. And I have seen him" Lia said.
Maria raised a brow. “The video calls you complained were off?”
“Still does not count. I have accepted his proposal and there is no going back"
“Did he come to court?”
“No, and it was not necessary”
Lia was upset when he did not come to court. In fact, that was the root of their argument last time, but after she thought about it and calmed down, it was not a big deal. He wanted to come, but he was held back by work.
She even saw his flight ticket, so it was not his fault. An emergency came up, and he had to attend to it, and she did not mind after thinking about it.
“Don't let love blind you, sis” Maria said
“It has not”
Maria sighed. There was no point arguing with her friend concerning the matter. Moreover, everyone knows it is very hard to make a woman who has fallen in love badly, see things rationally.
“I'm happy for you, though. Mrs Lia" Maria said placing her hand over Lia's that was on the table.
Lia nodded with a smile. “Thank you" she appreciated then squeezed Maria's hand softly “You don't have to worry, I know what I'm doing"
Maria nodded and opened her mouth to speak when a knock came on the door. Lia permitted the person to come in, revealing a handsome man. He was tall, with broad shoulders, piercing blue eyes and long hair. Dressed in red pants and a white shirt with marching sneakers, Alex was no less handsome.
Maria almost thought that he was Lia's man because she had been around a couple of times and had not seen anyone like him before.
Alex approached the table, bowing with his right hand on his chest. “Good day ma” he greeted
“Alex, what can I do for you?” Lia asked.
“I have some issues with the assignment ma," he said
Lia nodded then turned to Maria. “We'll catch up later then," she said
Maria nodded, taking to her feet. “Sure”
Once Maria left the office, Lia gave Alex her full attention. “So what is the problem?” she asked, gesturing for the seat Maria left vacant
Alex took a seat respectfully before speaking. “I was assigned to be the leader of group A. I looked into the topic, but I was having difficulty understanding what we should do”
That was a stupid question, but Alex wanted to spend some with her. His fear and lie have gripped him so hard, but he cannot tell her the truth. At least not yet.
Ignoring the obvious stupidity in that question, Lia explained. She has loved teaching right from when she was little. Impacting knowledge on people every day was like a sort of fuel to her life. Watching people graduate after her work is an additional bonus.
In her few years of teaching, she has met students that would ask the most stupid of questions. Some of them would ask questions that she already gave an answer to, and she would happily help them. After all, that was her job. To make her students understand.
Lia explained to Alex gently. As she did that, she felt strange. The more she stared at Alex, the more she felt she knew him from somewhere. Crazy enough, his blue eyes were drawing her more than necessary.
“Lia, get a hold of yourself. You are married. He is your student. A child" she thought as she proceeded with her explanation.
Alex, on the other hand, was not hearing anything she was saying. He already knew how the project was supposed to go. A play consisting of a few course mates of his, including him. They were meant to create the play from the subject matter she gave to each group. The best group would be rewarded. The rewards stated were not of concern to him except one.
The leader of the group would get an exclusive tour of Hollywood.
Alex was so excited, his hand acted on its own. It placed itself on Lia's hand.
